How to Teach Your Kids Important Life Lessons | Teaching Them Why in a Simple Way The Irish Mummy Podcast | Work Life Balance

    • Parenting

Children have a need for being taught in such a way that they can understand, which requires us to be able to teach in a simple way. Rosie gives the example of using animals to teach them by likening the animals to how their brain works and deciding which animal will be in control. Often when your children are struggling to do what you ask them to, it’s because they don’t understand why it’s important to complete these tasks. Using stories to teach a principle will make learning much more impactful, especially if you can share a story that tugs at their heartstrings.

“When you teach a principle, it’s like a third party in your relationship with your children. Sometimes if you say like, ‘Patty, can you get dressed?’ or ‘Saoirse can you have your breakfast? Can you do this, or can you do that?’ They see it as a request from me and that they’re just doing it because I want them to do it, but when you bring a principle and you teach them, and they understand the why and the benefits and the blessings of what that means, they take ownership and they feel empowered.” 11:27
