    EP156: Black Flag "Damaged"

    EP156: Black Flag "Damaged"

Black Flag’s 1981 debut is one of the most important documents of early hardcore and helped laid the blueprint for the shape of the Punk that was to come.  Their DIY sensibility, relentless touring schedule and unparalleled work ethic are legendarily but none of it would still be talked about today if the music didn’t kick-ass and it most certainly does that.  Never before or since was the band’s sound and worldview more perfectly captured than on the fifteen urgently punishing tracks that play almost like a greatest hits record over the 35 minutes of this iconic masterpiece.

    EP154: Fishbone "Truth & Soul"

    EP154: Fishbone "Truth & Soul"

Fishbone’s eclectic mix of Funk, Punk, Ska and Metal hit its commercial peak with 1988’s Truth & Soul.  Not as gritty or chaotic as previous releases but unmistakably Fishbone.  Their music could only be made by them, six African American guys from LA wearing their hearts on their sleeves and on T&S deciding to express their social consciousness and the Black experience on record.  It’s a complicated party music and a fun conversation.

    EP153: Funkadelic "Maggot Brain"

    EP153: Funkadelic "Maggot Brain"

A record that needs little introduction.  Just say “Maggot Brain” and the album cover of an afro’d woman, screaming and buried to her neck in dirt immediately comes to mind as does Eddie Hazel’s indelible guitar that blares for ten+ minutes on the opening title track.  We discuss the classic for more than twice the original albums runtime.  Time well spent.

Disclaimer:  We somehow completely neglected to discuss Funkadelic’s influence on 90’s West Coast Hip-Hop and on Dr. Dre’s G-Funk sound in particular.  A ridiculous omission that we’ll have to correct on a future episode.

    EP152: Clowns "Nature / Nurture"

Glenn curates a conversation about the flourishing young Australian Punk scene and one of its recent standouts; Melbourne's Clowns.   They’re young, pissed off and noisy just like Punk Rock’s supposed to be.

EP151: OFF! "The First Four EPs"

Are OFF! a supergroup?  We debate while unanimously agreeing that they kickass.  Their glorious run began with The First Four EPs which we discuss for this episodes 67 min runtime which is approximately four times longer than the four EPs combined.

Excellent podcast

I’ve been listening to this pod for the better part of a year and it keeps getting better. Mike & Rod (and Glen when he’s on) offer unique insight to some great music. I’m partial to the punk/hardcore episodes, but still find something interesting in all of their discussions. My particular favs are the Naked Raygun and Fugazi episodes. When can we finally get one dedicated to Hüsker Dü?
