    Episode 420 / Lauren Quin

Lauren Quin draws from a pool of the unformed and the entropic to render shapes caught in a process of emergence or recession. Parts grow out of other parts. And like bacteria, material starts to infect and invade. Her mark-making implies a passage between dimensions that generate sensuality and movement.

Quin holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art, and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions including her first US museum show, My Hellmouth, at the Nerman Museum of Art in 2023.
Her work is held in numerous public collections including the Columbus Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, ICA Miami, Museum of contemporary art, Los Angeles, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Nerman Museum of Art; Pérez Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Walker Art Center, and the Hirschorn Museum.

Lauren opens her first solo show in New York on May 3rd at 125 Newbury.

    Episode 418 / Rudy Shepherd

Rudy has a show up and we are releasing this episode for 2016 on the occasion. KATES-FERRI PROJECTS is delighted to present Rudy Shepherd's first solo exhibition with the gallery, THE GOLDEN AGE, from April 3 to May 5, 2024, with a reception on Friday, April 5, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at their 561 Grand Street space. This collection of acrylic on canvas paintings evolves from Shepherd's ongoing portrait series and delves into the visual culture of the golden age of hip-hop in the 1980s and 1990s, a period of tremendous innovation and stylistic experimentation in the genre. The artist renders intricate portraits of legendary musicians from iconic publicity photos and album covers, crafting massive 3' by 4' and 4' by 4' works that display the bravado and opulence of hip-hop while also interrogating it, prompting the viewer to reflect on the many meanings embedded in hip-hop imagery and music.

    Episode 415 / Ali Smith

    Episode 415 / Ali Smith

The vibrant style Ali Smith has brought to her writing and photography—featured regularly in The New York Times, The Guardian, and other publications internationally—was forged in New York’s underground music scene where she played bass in the seminal punk / blues / avant-garde band, Speedball Baby. After touring worldwide and recording several albums, Ali released two books of photography about women’s lives. The first, Laws of the Bandit Queens, led to a feature on OWN, Oprah Winfrey’s television network. The second, Momma Love: How the Mother Half Lives, won two International Book Awards, was praised by The New York Times, and Gloria Steinem called it “a gift to moms.” Since its release in January, 2024, Ali’s memoir The Ballad of Speedball Baby has garnished much critical acclaim and impassioned reader responses, reached #1 on Amazon, and led (amongst other things) to a BBC Sounds interview. This is without a doubt my favorite contemporary art podcast. I feel like I’m in the same room as Brian & the artists he interviews. Conversations wander in many directions but always include educational influences, stories of growing up & dealing with issues that helped & hindered artistic careers & music. Brian is the ultimate interview. He knows when to just listen & how to draw out ideas from introverted guests. His liberal arts background as well as working artist life style really shines in this podcast.

Mini biographies of bright, interesting artists

I love learning about how different artists made it work. Brian Alfred gets smart, talented artists on this pod and asks good questions. Fun, informative, and makes creative people feel at home. Perfect for studio listening!! Check it out!

Amazing

I love this podcast! The inclusion of music alleviates the focus on visual art which can get oppressive. Art is more. All of the stories and personal histories are wonderful to hear and are inspiring. Occasionally the host’s derision towards Christianity gets a bit bitter but he’s otherwise kind, generous, and a funny, delightful interlocutor👏.
