From DM to Brick-and-Mortar with Abou Sow | S3 EP7

From DM to Brick-and-Mortar with Abou Sow | S3 EP7

Today, we are privileged to have Abou Sow, the owner of Prince Abou's Butchery—one of the few Black-owned butcher shops in New York. Abou descends from a line of pastoral people from West Africa and learned the craft from his uncle's business at the young age of 11.
While he was initially reluctant to work in his uncle's shop, he now operates a successful butchery, which started from Instagram DM. Along the way, he learned to respect and honor all life and embrace his role in the cycle of life.

Abou's journey resonated with me as it mirrors my path of expanding on my family's traditions and transforming them into community-building tools. I hope you'll find this conversation as fascinating as I found it recording it.

Living Generously with Tyler Weston | Season 3 Episode 4

'Take freely, give cheerfully' These are the words that welcome visitors to the Love Stand, a community pantry in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

In this week's episode, we speak with Tyler Weston, steward of the pantry. Tyler shares a message you received from God one morning in March of 2020 that led him to turn the front porch of a neighborhood home into a food pantry. But this is not just any food pantry. The Love Stand is a space for love, hope, and inspiration. In our conversation, Tyler opens up about his experience serving his community during Covid. He shares his personal story, struggles, and the beauty in it. We also talk about setting aside our egos, humbling ourselves, making room for grace, and trusting God with the details of our lives.

MyKume Journal—It’s Awesome

I received valuable, life-enriching information, reminders and practices from Yelka’s MyKume journal. For example, I was reminded about the importance of stillness—being present with myself and my emotions, noticing my own mind-body and emotion-body connections and connectedness—each with their vast and intricate interplays and influences on the other. What I read in MyKume journal also has me reflecting on the importance of self soothing. I now take stock to recognize when I need to self soothe and to notice what works best for me. I find not only peace in such moments, but I’m more deeply aware of and grateful for all the gifts and beauty we receive/experience time and time again in present moments. Thank you Yelka for creating and sharing with all of us such a special guide and journal.

Like Chicken Soup for The Soul, but BETTER!

I really enjoy listening to Yelka’s podcast! The stories are deeply intriguing, relatable, and heartfelt. Yelka is very gifted in connecting with her guests and inspiring her listeners. She is deeply empathetic and each episode feels like Chicken. Soup for the Soul but BETTER! I highly recommend this podcast, which by the way, was just featured in The New York Times!

Story Sculpting

When I listen to your podcast, it seems to me that part of your storytelling gift is to approach a person and their story a bit like Michelangelo approached the rock from which he carved The David. Your curiosity leads you to ask questions whose answers reveal the contours of the story being told by people's lives. As those contours are revealed, a new beauty hidden in the rock is revealed. A new expression of the pattern emerging from the heart of everything comes into view for us to see and cooperate joyfully with, each in our own way. What a gift! When I think about offering myself to your curiosity in this way, it makes me curious to see what beauty might emerge and what might come from the emergence of that beauty. When I think about that - the prospect of the experience, and the prospect of what might grow from its soil in me, in you, in all of us - something quickens in me. Something that sounds like "yes!" and "oh, what fun!" and "if this isn't what joy looks like when it's naked, then at the very least I'll be disillusioned sooner so I can get on to filling my eyes with the real thing!"
