S2 E47: Shapeshifters - The Pooka, Changelings, and The Nix

S2 E47: Shapeshifters - The Pooka, Changelings, and The Nix

Three simple words have been etched into our brains since we started this show. "FOLLOW THE FOLKLORE".
    It's simple, and 100% true.
We continuously uncover a commonality as we navigate through the "rad strangeness" we end up rifling through and discussing on our show. What we continue to find is that for as long as humans were capable of passing down stories...similar archetypes, creatures, characters, and encounters have occurred all around the world.
Despite being separated by physical proximity and even time...the parallels and similarities are astounding.
Such is the case with what can be generalized as "SHAPESHIFTERS".

The God's honest truth is we fully intended for this episode to just be about SHAPESHIFTERS in general. Initially sparked by a curious photograph taken recently by a group of paranormal researchers, we started with the Irish legend of the Pooka (or Puca).
But, as we dove in - we dove deep, and found we couldn't get out...not quite yet.

So - sit back, grab a few pieces of pure Iron (Fe), and listen to us discuss some of the interesting folklore/legends of The Pooka, Changelings, and the Nix.

Thank you so much for listening - BE RAD!

S2 E46: Tyler Finally Watches Dune

S2 E46: Tyler Finally Watches Dune

I wish that I could express just how bad I want to underline, enlarge, and make bold - the word "FINALLY" in this episode's title.
In the 20+ years we've known each other I've been trying to convince Tyler to, at the very least, read DUNE by Frank Herbert. Or even to just come over and pop the 1984 David Lynch adaptation in my VCR. (That should have been an easy "yes" because of Sean Young, and Sting being in the movie).
But, much to my disappointment - he continued to not be interested in giving it a chance.
He didn't even listen when I described the greatness of the newest adaptation by Denis Villeneuve and the Allstar cast that came out in 2021.

But - finally the day has come. Get ready to dive into an episode where not only was I proven correct - but, we talk about all there is to love about one of sci-fi's greatest stories - DUNE. A story that I've been obsessed with since I was around 10 years old.
Somehow we dive into a few rabbit trails as to be expected - somehow even going down one on a Radiohead...

Listen to our thoughts about David Lynch's version, the truth behind Tyler's long wait to dive into this universe, what he thinks now, and the magic of Denis Villeneuve.

Thank you so much for listening - BE RAD!

S2 E45: Star Jelly, Angel Hair, & The Missing Thunderbird Photo

S2 E45: Star Jelly, Angel Hair, & The Missing Thunderbird Photo

For literally thousands of years, accounts of strange things from above have been documented. Perhaps one of the earliest accounts occurs in the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament.
Each year at the beginning of the rainy season, the people of Yoro, Honduras, gather buckets, barrels, pails, and nets in anticipation of fish that will fall from the sky.
Frogs, and toads have also fallen numerous time and in monstrous numbers; but so have winkles, worms, and snakes.
Blood has been seen dribbling or pouring from the sky as if lifted right off the screenplay of Jordan Peele's newest movie NOPE, beans and grains fall, and so do meat, muscle and fat.
Coins, swathes of silklike material, strange mysterious material known as "angel hair", buttery substances, and even something called "Star Jelly" are only some of the long list of "skyfall" we dive into on this episode.

Join us as we uncover the strange and mysterious rad things that have rained down from the heavens - seemingly since the dawn of mankind.

    Are they gifts from above?
    Weird oddities of nature?
    or
    Evidence of strange "window areas"?

Find out this week when you PRESS PLAY.

Thank you so much for listening to our show and all of your support, BE RAD.

    S2 E44: The Thunderbird Episode

    S2 E44: The Thunderbird Episode

The Chippewa (or Ojibwe) have a tradition - that in the time BEFORE time began - there existed a bird of supreme majesty that descended to earth...which was then only a vast expanse of water.
The birds eyes were fire; it's glance was lightning, and the motion of it's wings rippled through the air with thunder.
Join us this week as we dive into the amazing legends, of The Thunderbird.
All across North America essentially all tribes of Native Americans shared the legends and stories of the Thunderbird.
They became objects of religious ceremony, sacred, symbols of great power, and even creation.
They were loved, respected, and at times...feared.

But, did this ancient being, that interacted with Native Americans and First nations people die off and become extinct with the arrival of settlers?
Was it a giant bird of an uncharted -but now extinct- species, was it a smaller population of pterosaur flying through the skies, or was it simply a way for story tellers to explain weather patterns?
What was it the Native American people saw circling in the sky?

Press play on this episode and explore questions like this with us, as well as the intriguing modern day sightings that are still occurring!

Thanks so much for listening to our show - Be Rad.

    S2 E43: Nope & Prey - GIANT-SIZE Patreon Preview

    S2 E43: Nope & Prey - GIANT-SIZE Patreon Preview

In this GIANT-SIZE episode we discuss two movies released in July that we've been wanting to talk about on our show since we watched them both.

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't watched Nope, or Prey as of yet - you might want to wait before pressing PLAY on this 2HR+ episode, because we dive deep.
This week you'll hear us talk about Jordan Peele, his previous movies "Get Out", "Us" and whether we think he's a cinematic genius - or a flash in the pan. (Spoiler alert: genius)
We go over the acting chops, chemistry, and incredible character development of Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Brandon Perea, Michael Wincott, and Steven Yeun.
    Plus - what's up with that strange/eerie monkey sub-plot?
    And of course...we discuss...the ship.

    But wait - there's more!

After re-watching the original Predator and Predator II, Woody feels like an expert on where the newest in the franchise, Dan Trachtenberg's Prey, stacks up.
We talk about the incredible Amber Midthunder (coolest name in Hollywood), Dakota Beavers, and the amazing #girlpower trope that felt incredibly authentic.
We dive into the amazing Thunderbird Native American lore, briefly mentioned in the beginning of the movie, and our theories.
As well as all the easter eggs and tributes sprinkled throughout the movie as a nod to the ones that came before it.

We recorded this episode several weeks ago and tucked it away, along with a few others that we have saved, to be exclusive for our Patreon subscribers.
But, we thought releasing this GIANT-SIZE episode as a way to announce the upcoming launch of our Patreon would be the perfect kick off!

So, PRESS PLAY and hear what we rank these movies, and all the big announcements we have for the exciting things coming up for That Would Be Rad.

Thanks so much for listening to our show - Be Rad.

S2 E42: This Is Not a Mothman Episode

S2 E42: This Is Not a Mothman Episode

This is NOT a Mothman episode...but, we do end up mentioning the Mothman of Point Pleasant, West Virginia quite a bit...

It was hard not to frankly, because this week on our show, we are focusing on two sightings of a "large, dark, headless creature" with "gigantic wings, and fire red eyes" that occurred on the other side of the world with eerie similarity to America's own Mothman.

We're talking about The Blackbird of Chernobyl and The Freiberg Shrieker.
In April of 1986 the worst nuclear disaster the world has ever seen occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant...but, a few days prior the people living and working at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant began seeing a creature, described as a large black, bird like creature or a headless man with a 20 foot wingspan, and red eyes.

Just a few years previous in September of 1978 at a mine in Freiberg, Germany miners who arrived that morning to work were greeted by a strange dark figure blocking the mine's entrance - keeping the workers from entering...moments later an underground explosion inside the mine caused a collapse that would have killed all 50 men.

Are these the only sightings of a Mothman-like creature...the answer is NO.

PRESS PLAY and get ready to hear about sightings we found in history in areas all around the world dating all the way back to the 1800s.

Hear our theories, and help us decide...is this figure an angel with a warning...or a harbinger of death.

Thanks so much for listening, and Be Rad!

GRoseDesign ,

Love this! show

This podcast is a whole lot of fun. The subject matter ranges from everything 80s & 90s nostalgia to UFOs and the paranormal. AND from the moment you start listening, it's very apparant that a lot of thought and consideration is given to the audience, the material and the production value of the show. All that aside, what I enjoy the most about the show is the chemistry between the hosts. The conversation between Tyler and Woody is so easy and inviting that it feels like you just joined a onversation with two of your closest friends. SO, be RAD and give it a listen. You won't be disappointed.

So happy I found this show!

I became a listener in the Winter of 2021 and quickly went back through the older episodes. So glad to have a podcast that shares stories from some of my favorite interests: spooky mysteries, cryptids, 80s/90s nostalgia and pop culture!

Excellent

This podcast is amazing!!
The sound scape that they create to tell stories about the interesting, scary, and strange is bar none THE BEST out there.
These guys are my favorite.
They have great back and forth, interesting topics every week, and just seem like the nicest dudes.
I also love that it’s not just paranormal type stuff they talk about, equally loving the nostalgia. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
