From Woke to Work: The Anti-Racist Journey

This is From Woke to Work: The Anti-Racist Journey. Hosted by Kamala Avila-Salmon, she talks about what it means to go from a self-proclaimed ally to an effective anti-racist. Whether you’re an ally that’s ready to take action or a Black person looking for a place to direct all those ally questions, this is the podcast you’ll want to keep close at hand. There's something missing about the way that we're talking about allyship. Kamala felt it more acutely than ever in the wake of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. In this moment, the biggest global awakening on racism and racial injustice in a generation, more and more white and non-black people started showing up declaring themselves “Anti-Racist”. What were they doing? What were they actually doing besides messages of concern to their black friends and turning your profile pictures Black? What actions were they taking? Kamala started to get mad, but then she got curious. Did these newly “woke” allies know they needed to do things to bring about racial justice and equity? Did they know what to do? She put pen to paper and sketched out an anti-racism journey modeled after the traditional marketing funnel of how we get consumers from unaware to adopters of our product. Over the series of this podcast, Kamala will talk about that journey; how you can go from being woke (i.e. aware of racial inequity and injustice) to actually doing the work and eradicating it.
A work of beauty

I binged the entire season 1 in a week. It was exactly what I needed after my eyes were opened by reading Nice White Ladies by Jessie Daniels. The levels of progression to antiracist were so well thought-out and helpful. I took notes on all of the actions that Kamala and her guests recommended. It has been exciting to implement what I've learned! I feel that most of the advice was geared toward practical application in the workplace and would love to learn more in season 2 about friendships and communities of faith. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this podcast, it is simply beautiful!

This is a terrific podcast. We’re working through the episodes as a group at work, a well-educated group at a racial justice organization, and we still get a lot out of it.

Necessary for white women

A wonderfully crafted journey by Kamala Avila- Salmon, with inspiring activists who join her. This podcast explains the necessity of moving beyond “getting it right” in conversations about race. Anti-racism seems to be about embracing discomfort, connecting to others/community, and taking action. As a white woman, this podcast has been crucial to my learning. I am recommending it to my colleagues and friends. Thank you to everyone involved in creating this podcast.

I am a Black woman and didn’t think I needed this podcast, but I was wrong. It has really helped me understand where we are, where we need to go, and how to help white allies continue on this anti-racist journey. Thank you so much!

Please appear on the Glenn Loury Show

Can the ideas you espouse stand up to the scrutiny of Professor Loury’s implacable logic and reason?..But not to worry, he is a kind man. He does not bite. Please seriously consider strengthening the basis of your ideas by having an exchange with a considerate and extremely well informed member of the black community. What better way to prove the absolute faith you have in your ideas than by facing an intellectual heavyweight like him? Your ideas will either sink or swim.
Actionable, insightful resource

Kamala’s thoughtfully crafted episodes incite deep, critical thinking as well as some uncomfortable emotions in white listeners. And that’s the point. Playing your part in dismantling white supremacy is not easy or comfortable, but this podcast does what it can to normalize and channel what could otherwise feel like roadblocks into inspired actions.
