Patient-Centred Care (Stigma, Cancer, and Cannabis)

Does stigma stem from a lack of knowledge? In this episode, Stacy and Steph talk about stigma in the healthcare system. Stigma is not helpful to your health or to your recovery. Stigma exists in the cancer world, especially breast cancer when it comes to “body stigma”.  What is health? How do cancer patients come to terms with the decisions that affect their health as a result of their diagnosis?  Patient-centered care results in less stigma. Considering the individual, their experiences and goals are important in treatment planning. Involving the patient in some of the decision making allows them to eventually find comfort in their body, leading to acceptance of self and acceptance of the decisions that they helped to make.  We have seen improvements over the years with breast cancer treatments based on new research. The same can be said for cannabis. Conversations and treatment options change as new research emerges. This helps to decrease cannabis stigma.  How can we reduce suffering? What empowers the patient? What role does mindset, support, and connection with others play when it comes to stigma? Cancer and Cannabis - The Patient Mindset

In the face of adversity, do you think your mindset matters? If it matters, do you believe that your mindset is a learned behavior, or is it something we're born and raised with due to our surroundings? Or, is it a little bit of both? How do you look at difficult situations? Do you pull up your socks and get in there to grind it out? Or, do you throw your hands up saying, "Nope, I'm not doing that!" In this episode, Steph and Stacy share their personal stories around the "mindset" they each held during their breast cancer journeys and how cannabis played an essential role in their health. Quick Episode Summary 4:20 The night I told the kids that I had cancer.  10:45 "When I first got diagnosed, I thought immediately about my dad who had passed away from cancer, and how hard that was on his three daughters and his wife."  14:15 “There are so many different types of breast cancer, and they're not all treated the same. How it affects you and how you're going to manage to get through it in your life is very individual.” 15:25: "You can't suppress it - You need to address it."  16:00  Did you ever get stuck around the "Why did I get diagnosed with cancer"? 26:30 “With this cancer diagnosis, I learned a lot about my body. Cannabis had the potential to alleviate a lot of symptoms that I was experiencing.” 29:30 “The endocannabinoid system - it's why we react to this plant! Cannabis is a homeostatic agent, meaning when you add cannabinoids to your endocannabinoid system, it helps your entire body be balanced.” 32:00 "Cannabis reduces the pain in my joints so that I can go and have a good walk and obtain all of the healing benefits associated with movement and exercise." 34:45 “Should we drink alcohol if we want to reduce the risks of cancer recurrence?” American Cancer Society: “How are cancer patients (past their active treatment) living their best life to prevent cancer recurrence?” 36:15  “How about those Canadian cannabis drinks, eh?”  "I don't get a hangover or gut rot from my cannabis."  40:15  “However you look at the difficult situation you're in, you're going through, or you've been through, your mindset around it matters!” Watch for our next episode on the endocannabinoid system!   Links from our conversation: American Cancer Society Guideline for Diet and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention Steph and I welcome our listeners to reach out to us directly. An Introduction to Cannabis Terpenes and Flavonoids

In this episode, Steph and Stacy introduce us to the world of cannabis terpenes and flavonoids. Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants, though many people associate them with cannabis because cannabis plants contain high concentrations of them. Terpenes bring out the flavours and aromas of the plant and play an essential role in the product's effects on the consumer.  If you’re not aware of terpenes, you’re not too late to the game! -Stacy The nose knows! If possible, smell your cannabis before you buy, for this is an excellent way to decide whether or not a variety of cannabis will be more likely to "work" for you, based on your initial reaction and how it will engage with your body's chemistry. The certificate of analysis is another way to learn more about your favourite cannabis products.  Flavonoids provide the colour to the cannabis plant and protect the plant in nature. Flavonoids are found in nature, for example, in blueberries - the flavonoid anthocyanin makes them blue! The more we understand the plant, the more we can understand it’s true medicinal effects. -Steph Most common terpenes found in cannabis:  Myrcene - smells earthy, fruity, like cloves, and is known to be sedative in its effects. Limonene - smells of orange, citrus, and spice and has uplifting effects, among others. Pinene - smells like pine, woody, mountain air and is known to have effects that lead to "clarity."  Linalool - lavender contains high amounts of linalool and smells floral with spice and citrus notes. Great for sedation, it also helps to decrease the anxiety that THC may bring on, among other symptoms. Beta-Caryophyllene - found in black pepper, which leads to a spicy, woody scent. This terpene acts on the CB2 receptors of our endocannabinoid system and helps mitigate the "high" or the overwhelm of the high that THC evokes. Also helpful for inflammatory symptoms with conditions like arthritis and neuropathy. DaVinci Vaporizers:  Cannabis is not just a vehicle for THC. When it comes to personalizing your experience with cannabis, it’s important to remember that there is a full spectrum of compounds that play a role when it comes to whole-plant medicine. This episode speaks about intentional cannabis consumption. Consuming cannabis for things like sleep, anxiety, and pain, might mean that you need to combine different methods of consumption. We have thoroughly enjoyed sharing our personal stories as patients consuming medical cannabis and providing cannabis education to those looking for information about this medicinal plant. Thank you for following along with us in our passion to educate, inspire and nourish the community we've created here. Stay tuned towards the end of this episode. We will share an exciting opportunity about how you can continue to connect and work with us in "The Green Heart Club: Women, Weed, and Wellness". So let's dive in and start our recap of Season 1: Episode 1, Our story/Our journey to now: We talk about accessing medicinal cannabis as a natural therapeutic option for healing through and after breast cancer treatments. Despite the stigma about people who consume it, we held firm to our personal beliefs and to the science that helped us understand HOW this is medicine.  Episode 2, Patient-centred care (stigma, cancer, and cannabis): We talked all about stigma in medicine surrounding this plant. There is still a lot of stigma around cannabis, but we have learned and noticed that patient-centered care results in less stigma.  Episode 3, Cancer and Cannabis - The Patient Mindset: We share our personal stories around the "mindset" we each held during our breast cancer journeys and how cannabis played an essential role in our health and wellness. Episode 4, The Endocannabinoid System - What is it and how does it work? We share knowledge and insight on how medicinal cannabis and a healthy lifestyle work together to promote a healthy, balanced endocannabinoid system. This episode is our most popular episode yet! Please check it out! Episode 5, The Journey of the Cannabis Plant: It's essential to recognize those who came before us, educating and advocating for the cannabis plant. We break down the history of the cannabis plant, one of humanity's oldest cultivated crops.  Episode 6, Cannabinoids - What are they: We introduce our listeners to these naturally occurring chemical compounds and how they can play an essential role in pain relief, inflammation, and general health.  Episode 7, An Introduction to Cannabis Terpenes and Flavonoids: We use our "cannabis sommelier" skills to help you better understand how to pick out your favourite terpenes and the effects they're known to have. In this episode, we also introduced our listeners to Davinci Vaporizers!  Inhalation with a well-crafted device is critical for grabbing those terpenes at the proper temperatures. Episode 8, Cannabis Legalization - the rules and regulations (and how they affect the medical cannabis patient): We review how and why cannabis became federally legal across Canada. This is helpful information to add to your toolkit of cannabis knowledge. We also acknowledge those patients who advocated for a legal Medical Cannabis System in Canada. Episode 9, Cannabis for Pain, Stress, Anxiety, and Common Conditions: we break down the common conditions and symptoms that cannabis has known to help. We discuss types of pain and how cannabis can affect our perception of pain, including Cancer-related pain. We see stress, anxiety, sleep, and other related symptoms as the most common reasons people ask us about cannabis medicine. This is not the last time you'll hear from us!  We want to spend some time with you,
