An Introduction to Cannabis Terpenes and Flavonoids
In this episode, Steph and Stacy introduce us to the world of cannabis terpenes and flavonoids. Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants, though many people associate them with cannabis because cannabis plants contain high concentrations of them. Terpenes bring out the flavours and aromas of the plant and play an essential role in the product's effects on the consumer. If you’re not aware of terpenes, you’re not too late to the game! -Stacy The nose knows! If possible, smell your cannabis before you buy, for this is an excellent way to decide whether or not a variety of cannabis will be more likely to "work" for you, based on your initial reaction and how it will engage with your body's chemistry. The certificate of analysis is another way to learn more about your favourite cannabis products. Flavonoids provide the colour to the cannabis plant and protect the plant in nature. Flavonoids are found in nature, for example, in blueberries - the flavonoid anthocyanin makes them blue! The more we understand the plant, the more we can understand it’s true medicinal effects. -Steph Most common terpenes found in cannabis: Myrcene - smells earthy, fruity, like cloves, and is known to be sedative in its effects. Limonene - smells of orange, citrus, and spice and has uplifting effects, among others. Pinene - smells like pine, woody, mountain air and is known to have effects that lead to "clarity." Linalool - lavender contains high amounts of linalool and smells floral with spice and citrus notes. Great for sedation, it also helps to decrease the anxiety that THC may bring on, among other symptoms. Beta-Caryophyllene - found in black pepper, which leads to a spicy, woody scent. This terpene acts on the CB2 receptors of our endocannabinoid system and helps mitigate the "high" or the overwhelm of the high that THC evokes. Also helpful for inflammatory symptoms with conditions like arthritis and neuropathy. DaVinci Vaporizers: Cannabis is not just a vehicle for THC. Get the best experience from the terpenes by using a dry herb vaporizer (at the proper temperature) to maximize the effect.
