Disturbing New Details Emerge in Gilgo Beach Serial Killings: Rex Heuermann Charged with Two Additional Murders

Disturbing New Details Emerge in Gilgo Beach Serial Killings: Rex Heuermann Charged with Two Additional Murders

In a significant development in the Gilgo Beach serial killings case, suspect Rex Heuermann was charged Thursday with the murders of two additional women, Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. This brings the total number of his alleged killings to six. The charges, announced by Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney, extend the timeline of Heuermann’s alleged criminal activities, with the first murder now dated back to 1993.

According to court documents, Heuermann was charged with the 2003 murder of Jessica Taylor, whose remains were discovered in Gilgo Beach and Manorville, and accused of the 1993 murder of Sandra Costilla, whose remains were found in North Sea, Long Island. "The architect and father meticulously planned and executed six separate murders," said Tierney during a news conference on Thursday.

A significant breakthrough in the case came from a digital "planning document" found on one of 350 electronic devices seized from Heuermann's home in Massapequa Park, New York. This document contained a checklist detailing how to package a body for transport, avoid leaving DNA traces, and other steps to ensure the success of his gruesome acts. There were notes indicating steps to take "next time," such as considering a hit to the face or neck and using heavier rope for the neck.

"Heuermann wrote about the importance of sleep to avoid 'PROBLEMS' and to increase what he referred to as 'PLAY TIME,' believed to reference sexual and mutilation acts on victims," court documents reveal. The planning document also included a "post-event" checklist with tasks to avoid apprehension, such as "BURN GLOVES," "DISPOSE OF PICS," and "HAVE STORY SET."

Jessica Taylor, a sex worker in midtown Manhattan, was last seen in the same area where Heuermann worked. Taylor was decapitated and dismembered, with her remains discovered in stages over several years. DNA from hair found on a surgical drape underneath her body helped link Heuermann to her death.

Sandra Costilla, 28, was found in a wooded area in North Sea, Long Island, in 1993. DNA evidence also connected Heuermann to her murder. "Pornographic images accessed by Heuermann notably and largely coincide with how the remains of Taylor and Costilla were found," prosecutors noted.

Heuermann was initially arrested in July and charged with the murders of Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Melissa Barthelemy, all escorts whose remains were found in desolate spots near Gilgo Beach in 2010. He was later charged with the murder of a fourth escort, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Six additional sets of remains were also found in the area.

In court on Thursday, Heuermann pleaded not guilty to the new charges. His defense attorney reiterated his innocence. Heuermann remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to return to court on July 30.

District Attorney Tierney stated that Heuermann is now the leading suspect in the death of Valerie Mack, whose remains were found in Manorville near Jessica Taylor’s. Investigators will continue to review over 30 years of crimes in Suffolk County and beyond to see what else might be connected to Heuermann.

This case continues to unfold as authorities piece together the extent of Heuermann's alleged crimes, bringing some measure of closure to the families of the victims. The investigation remains ongoing, with the hope that further evidence will emerge to solidify the case against Heuermann.

Massachusetts State Police Detective Details Key Evidence in Karen Read Murder Trial

Massachusetts State Police Detective Details Key Evidence in Karen Read Murder Trial

In the latest development in the Karen Read murder trial, Massachusetts State Police Sergeant Yuriy Bukhenik took the stand to present crucial evidence to the jury. Read, 44, from Mansfield, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.  Sergeant Bukhenik, who supervised the investigation, brought O’Keefe’s shirt, belt, and other clothing items to show the jury. Bukhenik, who worked alongside Trooper Michael Proctor, testified about their initial interview with Read at her parents’ home in Dighton.

The jury viewed video footage showing Read and her father arriving at the Dighton home and inspecting the rear of Read’s Lexus, which had damage to the right rear taillight. Bukhenik explained that this damage occurred when Read backed out of O’Keefe’s driveway, inadvertently bumping into his vehicle. This video provided the jury with the defense's explanation of how the taillight was damaged.

The prosecution highlighted Read’s activities before the incident, showing video from a Canton bar where Read had six drinks before heading to another bar.

This footage aimed to establish her level of intoxication. ADA Lally further detailed Read’s actions through the night, showing her backing out of O’Keefe’s driveway at around 5 a.m. on January 29th.

In a more somber part of the proceedings, the jury saw autopsy photos of O’Keefe, which caused his mother to leave the courtroom briefly. Sergeant Bukhenik described O’Keefe’s injuries, noting the linear abrasions on his right arm and other trauma.  Despite objections from the defense, the descriptions were admitted into evidence.
Forensic scientists Ashley Vallier and Christina Hanley provided insights into the evidence handling and analysis.
Hanley testified about the broken cocktail glass found on Read’s bumper, confirming it matched the glass collected at the scene. Vallier explained the structural match of the taillight pieces, showing a partial reconstruction of the broken taillight from different pieces. In cross-examination, the defense questioned the chain of custody and integrity of the evidence, with Attorney Yannetti probing the timeline and handling of O’Keefe’s clothing and other critical pieces of evidence.

Sergeant Bukhenik’s testimony also covered his discussions with other key figures in the investigation. He recounted interviewing witnesses at the McCabe residence and finding O’Keefe’s clothing at the hospital emergency room, noting traces of vomit on the items.

Throughout the day, the court saw a detailed recounting of the investigation process. From the snow-covered morning when the investigation began to the forensic analysis conducted weeks later, every step was scrutinized. Bukhenik confirmed the meticulous steps taken to preserve and analyze evidence, although he admitted certain limitations in his access to the evidence room.

As the trial progresses, more details will emerge from further testimonies and evidence presentations. Sergeant Bukhenik is expected to return to the stand, providing additional insights into the case.

This complex and emotionally charged trial continues to unfold, with the prosecution and defense meticulously presenting their arguments to uncover the truth behind John O’Keefe’s tragic death.

Ad-Free Advance | Sherri Papini Claims to be Writing Books and Building a Foundation During Supervised Visits with Her Children

Ad-Free Advance | Sherri Papini Claims to be Writing Books and Building a Foundation During Supervised Visits with Her Children

Sherri Papini, who gained notoriety for faking her own kidnapping in 2016, has recently told her daughter that she is an author currently writing two books. This revelation was made during a supervised visitation with her children, as documented by a monitor. The supervised visitation report from January 17, 2024, was reviewed by PEOPLE and included in the ongoing divorce proceedings between Sherri and her estranged husband, Keith Papini.

During the visitation, Sherri was asked about her current occupation. She responded, "Well, like this place [a supervised visitation center] is very helpful for families, well mommy is building a foundation to help places like this more. Mommy is making a business that will be a foundation to help people." She continued to explain her new role as an author, stating, "Do you know what an author is? Mommy’s also an author now. She’s writing two books. I work lots of hours to write chapter books. So, when I tell you I’m working remotely, that means I’m at home writing chapters on my laptop.”

Sherri Papini's name became widely known in 2016 when she disappeared for 22 days, only to be found on a Sacramento highway with multiple injuries and weighing less than 90 lbs. She claimed she had been kidnapped by two Hispanic women while jogging, a story that garnered significant media attention and sympathy.

However, years of investigation into her disappearance led to a shocking revelation. Authorities discovered that Sherri had willingly stayed at an ex-boyfriend's home during the time she was missing. To make her kidnapping story believable, Sherri and her ex-boyfriend inflicted numerous injuries on her. In 2022, she was charged with lying to a federal officer and mail fraud.

In April 2022, Sherri pleaded guilty to the charges. Shortly after her guilty plea, Keith Papini filed for divorce and requested sole custody of their children. The couple's marriage was officially dissolved in May 2023. Sherri was sentenced to 18 months in prison but served less than a year.

The divorce proceedings revealed the impact of Sherri's deception on her family. In the 2023 filing, attorneys for Keith Papini stated, "For over five years, she abused her children and her husband by conning them into believing her lie and then forcing them to live with the fear resulting from their belief in her lie and played on their sympathies. Sherri Papini did not have the moral character to come to her family and confess her wrongdoing, rather she callously allowed them to learn the truth from the media when she admitted her lie in a federal court.”

Currently, Sherri has one-hour supervised visits with the two children she shares with Keith. During these monitored interactions, she has claimed to be focusing on her writing and building a foundation to support families in need. The accuracy of these claims remains uncertain, but they add another layer to the complex and controversial narrative of Sherri Papini's life.

Ad-Free Advance | Trial Continues for Karen Read, Accused of Murdering Boyfriend During Snowstorm

Ad-Free Advance | Trial Continues for Karen Read, Accused of Murdering Boyfriend During Snowstorm

The murder trial of Karen Read, a 44-year-old woman from Mansfield, Massachusetts, entered its latest phase Thursday as Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuri Bukhenick returned to the stand to testify about key evidence and surveillance footage.

Read stands accused of second-degree murder and other charges after allegedly hitting her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, with her black SUV during a snowstorm on January 29, 2022. The incident occurred outside a home at 34 Fairview Road in Canton following a night of drinking.
Defense attorney Alan Jackson raised questions about the validity of evidence presented by the prosecution, particularly focusing on a surveillance video showing Read's SUV inside the garage of the Canton Police Department. Jackson pointed out discrepancies in the video, including writing on another vehicle in the garage, which Sgt. Bukhenick explained as a mirrored image.

Throughout the trial, Bukhenick testified about the evidence recovered from the scene in the weeks following O'Keefe's death, including a Boston Police Department hat, a drinking straw, and various shards of glass and plastic. These items were discovered after the snow melted, offering potential clues to the events of that fateful night.

In an audio recording played for the jury, Read mentioned a previous physical altercation involving O'Keefe and other individuals, suggesting that his injuries may not have been solely inflicted by her. This statement aligns with the defense's argument that someone else is responsible for O'Keefe's death.

The defense also questioned Bukhenick about his initial suspicions regarding the cause of O'Keefe's death, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the case. Additionally, Jackson raised concerns about the handling of evidence, including O'Keefe's clothing, which was bagged six days after being recovered from the scene.

Surveillance footage showing Read backing her SUV out of O'Keefe's home on the night of the incident was also scrutinized during Bukhenick's testimony. The defense pointed out apparent movement of the rear wheel of O'Keefe's vehicle as Read's SUV backed out, suggesting potential inconsistencies in the prosecution's narrative.
As the trial progresses, both the prosecution and defense are presenting their arguments, aiming to persuade the jury of their respective positions. The case continues to unfold, with implications that extend beyond the courtroom, highlighting the complexities of criminal investigations and legal proceedings in cases of alleged murder.

Cell Phone Data Challenges Emerge in Kohberger Murder Case

Cell Phone Data Challenges Emerge in Kohberger Murder Case

A pretrial hearing in the case against Bryan Kohberger, the graduate student accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students, has brought to light significant challenges related to cell phone data collection and recordkeeping. Cellphone analyst Sy Ray, expected to testify as an expert witness at trial, expressed concerns about the accuracy and organization of evidence provided by law enforcement. A pretrial hearing in the case against Bryan Kohberger, the graduate student accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students, revealed significant challenges related to cellphone data collection and recordkeeping. Cellphone analyst Sy Ray, who is expected to testify as an expert witness at trial, raised concerns about the accuracy and organization of the evidence provided by law enforcement.

Ray, a former police detective from Arizona, typically serves as an expert witness for prosecutors in criminal cases. However, his testimony in this case has raised eyebrows due to its potential impact on the prosecution’s narrative.

The key issues highlighted during the hearing include:

    Disorganized Data Collection:

Law enforcement’s approach to data collection, particularly regarding cell phone records, has been disorganized.
Not all of the data extracted from Kohberger’s phone around the time of the 2022 murders was accurately mapped.

    Crucial Evidence Under Scrutiny:

Prosecutors are heavily relying on Kohberger’s cell phone use and cell tower records to link him to the location of the killings.
Ray emphasized the critical need for accurate data to establish probable cause.

    Benefit to the Defense:

Ray’s testimony revealed that missing or inaccurate data favors the defense.
Every gap in the evidence potentially strengthens Kohberger’s case.

    Unclear Circumstances:

Ray questioned whether the missing data resulted from human error, accidental oversight, or intentional actions.

Ongoing Legal Battles and Trial Delays:

The defense is pressing the judge to compel prosecutors to turn over specific evidence during the discovery phase.
DNA experts are expected to testify in a later closed hearing.
Trial delays have frustrated families of the victims, hindering their healing process.

    Latah County Trial Location:

A hearing on whether to move the trial out of Latah County has been further delayed to Aug. 29.

The families of the victims, including Kaylee Goncalves, have expressed their frustration with the slow pace of legal proceedings. They seek justice and closure, but the ongoing delays continue to impede their healing process. As the trial date approaches, the courtroom drama intensifies, leaving everyone anxiously awaiting the resolution of this high-profile case.
