While staying with his family in Oklahoma for a brief spell, our guest Brandon was going to visit his friend in Arkansas a for a quick weekend camping trip. On the way there, he decided to make a stop in Fayetteville to get a little of that sticky icky green stuff for a little extra enjoyment. (This was in 2017– well before it was legal in most states.) When Brandon finally found someone who said she had a connection who could hook him, he was stoked. Unfortunately, her connection had other ideas— which included a concrete slab to Brandon’s skull, and a steel toe boot to Brandon’s face (15+ times). Robbed and left for dead, Brandon somehow survived. And THIS is when Brandon’s story REALLY gets wild. Trust us when we say— if there’s one episode you wanna listen to or watch all the way to the very end, this is the one!

This week’s guest Harlie was only 9 years old when a SWAT Team surrounded her house, guns drawn from every possible angle — street level, rooftop, you name it — hunting her father, who police suspected had shot up his former girlfriend’s apartment in a meth-fueled rage. Believe it or not, this is just the BEGINNING of Harlie’s wild tale.
This one’s got a shootout in broad daylight, a 6-hour SWAT Team standoff in suburban Utah, a dog drenched in tear gas, a meth-head named ‘Tigger’, another meth-head escaping a crime scene in a woman’s wig, and whole lotta other crazy details too— but it also has a big heart, one that sneaks up on you and eventually takes over the whole frigging episode, thanks to Harlie and the earnest, honest way she tells her family story of crime, addiction, violence, forgiveness, and an unbreakable father-daughter bond.

Spencer! Poor Spencer! Was just trying to be nice to someone who was clearly in need! And ended up experiencing several months of hell at the hands of a woman who thought (unbeknownst to Spencer at the time!) that Spencer was her one true soulmate. We'd write more (and there IS a WHOOOLE LOT more!) but honestly you have to hear the details from Spencer himself for this story to have its most maximum mind-blowing effect.

Everyone has that one friend who is always getting into something crazy, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Today’s guest, a fella named Andrew, is one of those people— and in his case, it IS intentional. He’s constantly saying yes to the craziest of opportunities, so that he always has great stories with which to entertain his friends. But in this episode, Andrew tells Matt what he considers his very BEST story, which involves a Jamaican scientist who loves to cook ribs, get naked without warning, invite strangers into his sauna to EAT the ribs he cooked, and then brandish a machete. Not sure what else to say about this episode besides— strap in, this one is particularly insane!

Episode 17 is here and IT IS A WILD ONE! So many twists and turns in this one, it’s best to keep this short and sweet, so here goes—
Our guest Jason was in college in Florida at the time of this tale, when he and his brothers decided to rent a place there for a chill summer full of sunshine and partying. Only a few friends of his remained in town while school was out— one of them being the ex girlfriend of Jason’s former roommate. And at a get together at Jason’s place one night, this ex-girlfriend of Jason’s friend showed up (AGAIN— after already having left about an hour earlier) in a very bad way... bloodied, beaten, and unable to speak— clearly severely traumatized in some way. Freaked out for his friend and just generally wanting to be a good person, Jason immediately took on a protector role of sorts, which ends up being wayyyyy more than he bargained for...
To avoid giving too much away, it's best to leave it at that— but let’s just say things only get crazier from there! MUCH MUCH crazier. You don’t wanna miss this one!

The Private Record — Episode 016 — "When You Make Fake Money To Buy Drugs & Your Dealer Tries To Kill You For It"
This story sounds and feels like a sequence from a movie BUT, the thing is, it ACTUALLY HAPPENED. And the fact that our guest Christina is even alive to tell us the tale is... well... absolutely and completely bingbong bonkers insane.
When Christina was a teenager she was hooked on heroin. Like, REALLY hooked. So hooked, in fact, that at one point she needed a fix so bad that she (along with two equally heroin-hooked friends) printed fake money (on regular computer paper!!!) to buy over 200 hundred dollars worth of H from their gang-affiliated dealer. Somehow, at first, the exchange goes off without a hitch— but when Christina's friend steps back into her car to drive off with the goods, Christina quickly realizes this will NOT be the clean getaway she was hoping for. What ensues is a high speed chase along an interstate freeway, infuriated gangbangers, and gunshots whizzing by the heads of Christina and her heroin-addled friends.

Love it!
Really love the freedom Matt gives to people so they can tell their stories, and he has thoughtful questions that add to the storytelling. Seems like guests are instructed to keep it moving - so many podcasts with guests, like Something Was Wrong, have such poor storytelling (saying the same thing over and over in different ways) that make it hard to listen to. The Private Record episodes are always a smooth and easy, but entertaining, listen! Really recommend.
