The Story of No. 1: Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (Extended Preview)

On this deep dive into Lauryn Hill’s masterpiece The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis unpacks the story and legacy of the album voted No. 1 on Apple Music’s definitive list of the 100 Best albums of all time.

In this excerpt, Nadeska learns the emotional story behind “To Zion," Lauryn Hill’s ode to her newborn son. Nadeska finds out why, when Lauryn was told to “use her head," she chose to “use her heart” instead.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill dropped on August 25, 1998, and changed everything. It’s a deeply personal collection of songs that document a time of major change in a young artist’s life. The album not only expanded the sound of hip hop, it massively extended its reach as well: Miseducation has been credited for helping to push hip hop firmly into the mainstream all over the globe. But, as we hear in this podcast, it’s an album that might never have been released.

In this series, Apple Music subscribers can hear the remarkable story behind this groundbreaking and culture-shifting album, find out the truth behind the blistering opening track “Lost Ones,” discover what happened behind the scenes at Bob Marley’s studio in Jamaica, and learn how the album helped launch the career of another music superstar.

Jayson Jackson, Lauryn Hill’s former manager
Dr Joan Morgan, hip hop journalist and author of She Begat This: 20 Years of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

How to play in order?!

I like the interpretations and reflections of time and and art but it’s driving me crazy that I can’t play it from #100 to #1.

Hi

Hi Wweekn, if you want to write a serious review, use proper grammar. Also, you spelled “Abbey Road” wrong. Calm down, take a chill pill, and flow. What kind of person thinks it’s right to produce so much hate?

buckle up

this list is a freaking joke. for the start it’s body talk by robin it’s a good album but starting from off a list so big like this with an explicit album just drives me and lots of other people away and my phone is on safe mode and the fact that the #1 album that isn’t explicit has an explicit 45 minute long episode of its backstory just was downright stupid. then it’s the big reason I hate this list … but first I’m very happy that they voted on this list rather then doing critic scores or how many people listen to it monthly. Okay … why do you put such random albums on basically the most looked up to album list basically ever? there are a handful of these that I agree with like thriller it’s a really good album but not #1 worthy, and Abby road but there is one album that just doesn’t belong in its place….. purple rain it belongs on this list but not at #4 it’s got some groove to it but I just don’t understand how it’s that high up. Okay the #1 album … why why why is it the miseducation of Lauryn hill it’s good but #1 no just no. now next where is Olivia Rodrigo she’s not my favorite but how is she not on here at all like ice spice, Olivia , and H.E.R are not on this list same thing I don’t like them they just all made 1 and only one (except for Olivia) one album that was really popular. But what really gets me mad is WHERE THE HECK IS QUEEN usually queen albums have like 2 popular songs that keep the album afloat particularly a night at the opera and hot space these albums would be complete jokes if it wasn’t for bohemian rhapsody and under pressure but news of the world, jazz, the works and innuendo could have easily been like a solid 94 or something and they had big guts to only put appetite for destruction at 52 but that’s it for now
