Expert Extra #19: Dr. Lee Francis IV, owner of Native Realities Publishing and Red Planet Books & Comics

Expert Extra #19: Dr. Lee Francis IV, owner of Native Realities Publishing and Red Planet Books & Comics

Dr. Lee Francis IV (Laguna Pueblo), self-described indiginerd poet, educator, activist, comic creator and owner of Native Realities Press, co-owner of Red Planet Books & Comics, and founder of Indigenous ComicCon, generously sat down with us for a comprehensive and wide-ranging interview on why he started these businesses, the current state of affairs for #Indigenous #comics, and how he attempts to #decolonize the comics medium. Lee's creative enterprises also provide an antidote to the "sidekickery" that #Native characters are usually relegated to in comics and other mediums by creating binders of skilled Native artists and writers that he hopes will get mainstream comics publishers away from using Indigenous creators as lip service consultants and instead, provide these makers with an equal seat at the table. "We want to be able to write our own stories. Tell them in the way we tell them," Lee says. Listen today, share with friends, and feel inspired.

A Beacon in the Societal Darkness

This podcast kept me company during my 10 hours of driving to and from Pittsburgh (essentially 10 episodes in two days). After my lengthy journey, I find these true educators behind this series informative, knowledgeable, and down to earth. They seek to paint the grey among the divisive binary of black and white riddled in U.S. culture and society. They unpack the most fraught issues with honesty and integrity by using many reliable resources to support their statements. It also helps that these podcasters inflect the Black Plague enveloping American politics with humor and wit. Listen, learn, take action, and utilize the words and resources they have to offer. I promise you will not regret it.

Informative and entertaining!

Inside254 hosts Dr. Colleen Clemens and Dr. Amanda Morris are experts in their fields, and they always offer thought-provoking commentary on issues that matter, like free speech, Native Americans, the Incel Movement, Trump Presidency. Clemens and Morris are witty and engaging. They help listeners understand complex topics and make us feel like part of a community of learners. An essential listening experience.

Timely

I appreciate the critical lense in which Inside 254 uses to explore a wide range of topics. The conversations are funny, smart, and leave you pondering way after the podcast is over.
