Introducing "Jesus Was a Loser"

Say what? Today, I'm introducing what we'll be talking about over the next few weeks. It's an idea that's been rolling around in my head, but a few things over the past couple of months gave it some shape...at least enough for us to begin exploring here. Hope you enjoy!

In this newest series, "Jesus Was a Loser," from God Knows Where, we’ll look at all that Jesus lacked (at least from our perspective) - all the things we strive to have in our lives (homes, livelihoods, lovers, you know the American Dream) and by which we measure our own success in life - and we’ll consider whether or not his being a loser by our standards, actually contributed to his ultimate victory.

We’ll look at ideas that are right there in the texts of our tradition but that our post-Easter eyes often gloss over. We’ll look at the components of his life that make it possible for us to say he was a loser by our standards of success and the approaches to life that he willingly gave up or laid down, as Dietrich Bonhoeffer put it, and see if we can’t “find God precisely in his lowliness.”
