Ep. 3: The Face of AIDS

In the conclusion to our series, we examine the current state of HIV and Cuba through the eyes of interview participants. The Cuban volunteers who deliver messages of HIV prevention and education to gay people, women, and people with HIV usually share those identities with their audiences. This facilitates a shared enthusiasm that enables Cuba's Ministry of Public Health to reach many people with meager resources. Activists who work to raise awareness and improve quality of life for people with HIV struggle to overcome resource deprivation, cultural barriers and even resistance from within Cuba's government. In this podcast, we again turn to the interviews to shed light on what this all means for Cuba and for the rest of the world. (0:00-5:45) Intro: Overview of how the Cuban Ministry of Public Health fights HIV along with areas for improvement (5:45-14:18) The state of gay life in Cuba: the call is coming from inside the house! (14:18-19:48) Why were married women getting infected with HIV at the time of the interviews? (19:48-24:25) Afro-aché and religious-based prevention movements within a country that frowns on religious practice (24:25-end) Who is responsible for an epidemic? Ep. 2: Pretty Prisons

In Episode Two of the series, we dive into the Cuban sanatorium experience, taking a closer look at what life was like for HIV-positive people who were forced to live there. Some residents describe the sanatoria as an idyllic sanctuary; others, as a medicalized prison. Residents were treated more humanely over time; after years of comfortable isolation, some became reluctant to rejoin society. If the sanatoria did irrevocable damage to some people with HIV, how do we weigh that against the lives they saved? And how do we weigh that against AIDS responses around the world? In this episode, we look to HIV-positive Cubans for answers. Episode Summary: (0:00-4:34) Intro: How much can we know about what goes on behind walls? (4:34-22:20): Luxury, Refuge, Discovery, Community: The benefits of the sanatorium. (22:20-33:15): The darker side of sanatorium life (33:15-41:09): Framing the Cuban response in a global context Music: Intro: Artist: Chad Crouch Song: Algorithms URL: freemusicarchive.org/music/Chad_Cro…rps/Algorithms Comments: freemusicarchive.org/ Curator: Copyright: Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 International: creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ Artist: Blue Dot Sessions (3:15) Song: The Zeppelin URL: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Blue_Dot_Sessions/Aeronaut/The_Zeppelin_1908 Comments: http://freemusicarchive.org/ Curator: Music for Video Copyright: Attribution-NonCommercial: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ (28:40) Song: Watercool Quiet URL: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Blue_Dot_Sessions/Calumet/Watercool_Quiet Comments: http://freemusicarchive.org/ Curator: Music for Video Copyright: Attribution-NonCommercial: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ (34:20) Song: Di Breun URL: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Blue_Dot_Sessions/Architect/Di_Breun Comments: http://freemusicarchive.org/ Curator: Music for Video Copyright: Attribution-NonCommercial: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ Outro: Artist: Milkshake Daddy Song: Super Sloppy Space Junk URL: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Milkshake_Daddy/Aquatic_Ape_Hypothesis/08_Super_Sloppy_Space_Junk Comments: http://freemusicarchive.org/ Curator: Oddio Overplay Copyright: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike: http://creativecommons.org/licenses

  3. Ep. 1: Introduction

    29/11/2019

    Ep. 1: Introduction

In the 1980s, Cuba responded to the threat of AIDS unlike any other country in the world: by isolating all who tested positive in sanatoria. New and deadly pandemics loom in our future. Armed with 40 new and unpublished interviews of Cubans connected to the HIV epidemic, we revisit the Cuban quarantine to interrogate the role isolation and quarantine should play in confronting infectious disease worldwide. (0:00-10:20) Series intro: Who am I? Why should you listen to my podcast? Why should we care about HIV in Cuba? (10:20-15:45) From Mariel to Los Cocos: on Gay life in Cuba (15:45-21:15) Interview with Dr. Miguel Rojas-Sotelo (21:15-39:45) Historical overview of the Cuban epidemic (39:45-48:30) Cubans criticize the Cuban response.
