Young who recently published "Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right." Episode 12 of QAF, "Move It Or Lose It" explores Michael and David's moving dilemmas, the harmful effects of conversion therapy, and gay politics! Neil is a historian who specializes in LGBTQ politics, specifically the history of gay men and the republican party. Neil cannot believe that Michael and David think it's a good idea to move in together when it seems like they don't even know each other's interests and lifestyle. When it comes to Emmett's conversion therapy storyline, Neil has so many thoughts about how unrealistic and poorly done these scenes are. When it comes to politics in this show, Andrew remarks that rarely do any of the characters speak openly about political parties or current political issues of the time. While the characters don't talk extensively about politics, most seem to hold similar liberal views. But, Neil explains that while a majority of the LGBTQ community are liberal, there has always been a segment of gay republicans. Such an iconic line from one of my favorite horror movies, but it's not every day that you can ask this question to an award-winning horror writer! I first ask Paul about his 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World which was adapted by M. Night Shyamalan into Knock at the Cabin (featuring Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Rupert Grint). He answers all of my adaptation questions including what he thought of M. Night Shyamalan changing some of his major plot points. He explains why it was so important for him to explore queer trauma in this novel and why he's always preferred psychological horror over slasher films. I then ask Paul all about his new novel Horror Movie which is a chilling twist on the "cursed film genre." Paul explains the inspiration for his book including the multiple meanings of cursed films! He explains how he lets his subconscious guide his stories and why he loves to write about his obsessions. Then, he provides really helpful advice for aspiring writers and why the horror community is such a welcoming and supportive space for creative people! Kevin provides the origin story for his Bette enthusiasm and how he came to write "On Bette Midler: An Opinionated Guide" (published this year). At a young age, he connected with Bette's unconventional persona and how it resonated with him as a shy, young gay man. Kevin describes how Bette built a following performing in underground venues like the Continental Baths before breaking through to mainstream success on TV, in film, and as a concert performer. He discusses how she was able to maintain her authentic persona and appeal to broader audiences. Kevin highlights Bette's philanthropic work, including founding the New York Restoration Project to revitalize green spaces in the city. He also notes her willingness to be politically outspoken and use her platform for social causes. Kevin and I discuss trends in Broadway, including the continued appeal of star-driven vehicles and the challenge for more ensemble-focused shows to gain traction. They also reflect on the legacies of choreographers like Bob Fosse in shaping the Broadway landscape.
