    Shaana Rahman on Gender Bias and Mentorship in Law

    I’m excited to share Part I of my conversation with Shaana Rahman. Shaana is an accomplished trial lawyer in all facets. She is also known for her excellence in public entity liability, to the extent that a major municipality offered her a job in an effort to avoid her laser-like litigation focus, as well as helping cyclists. That cycling help withstood media scrutiny recently when she helped a family navigate the loss of their son, an international track cycling champion, when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver.  Shaana has also devoted herself to mentoring law students and new lawyers, including founding the Trial Advocacy Diversity Fellowship through the San Francisco Trial Lawyers’ Association, and helping improve the diversity pipeline for what remains an overwhelmingly white, male, and hetero plaintiffs’ bar. In between all this, she got a hobby - running an olive farm with award-winning olive oil along with a not-insignificant Tik Tok following. In our civil world most lawyers are lucky to see a few trials a year. Not Phoenix. Within his first two years in practice, Phoenix received an official commendation from San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors for trying more misdemeanor cases than any lawyer in the last decade. His work was featured on PBS through a documentary, Presumed Guilty. Phoenix gives us a glimpse into criminal court trial work and how one focused individual can change lives.  Phoenix grew up in the small southern town of Beebe, Arkansas, where he and his family experienced racist attacks and abuse. These experiences helped fuel Phoenix's drive to become a public defender. He did not take the easy route. Phoenix served our country with four years enlisted in the Navy, then attended UC Berkeley on the G.I.
