EMPOWER MISSOURI GIVES THEIR UPDATE; PLUS MORE ON COURT VICTIM SERVICES

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Join host Bev Livingston as she speaks with Gwen Smith-Moore, a St. Louis native who joined Empower Missouri in June 2022 as the Criminal Justice Policy Manager. Over the past 8 years, she has worked in various capacities with justice-involved community members. Gwen has managed direct service and reentry housing programs, provided direct support to individuals incarcerated in jail and prison, and led local efforts to coordinate reentry support services. Bev and Gwen will update listeners on Summit highlights, provide upcoming year information, legislative issues and tell us of any calls to action. https://empowermissouri.org/ We will play our calendar at the midpoint of the hour. During the second half of our hour, host Terri Wilke will speak with Janelle Johnson.  This will be a follow-up from our program about the Victims Services Department at the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office.  Janelle will share her experience with the Prosecutor's office, as well as the Kansas City Police Department and the Raytown police. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

TURN YOUR GUNS INTO USEFUL TOOLS

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Terri Wilke speaks with Mary Merola, a member of the Guns to Gardens task force of Central Presbyterian Church, 3501 Campbell St, Kansas City, MO.  Guns to Gardens is a national movement based on the Biblical scripture Isaiah 2:4, “…Beat their swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks.”  The project is modeled on the non-profit organization RAWtools in Colorado, which created a national network of blacksmiths who forge dismantled gun parts into garden tools and art projects. The movement was started following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, 2012. https://rawtools.org/ Locally, this past Saturday on October 12th, Central Presbyterian Church sponsored a Guns to Gardens Safe Surrender Event, creating an opportunity to surrender unwanted firearms safely, responsibly and anonymously. “Guns to Gardens” shares the vision of making communities safer and more richly connected. Sometimes, the firearms that people want to dispose of are inherited, or guns a family feels are unsafe to have in a home with children, teens, senior citizens or with anyone who suffers from a serious illness. The Safe Surrender Event allowed community members to dispose of unwanted, unloaded firearms anonymously, practically, and responsibly. People surrendering firearms were asked to place them in their vehicle’s trunk and bring them to the church parking lot where a trained Guns to Gardens volunteer removed and dismantled the gun. Following the Safe Surrender event, the chopped-up firearms will be repurposed into garden tools, kitchen implements, and other items.  Over 70 firearms were removed from Kansas City streets at this event. Central Presbyterian Church is a diverse, inclusive, and compassionate community dedicated to service and social justice grounded in faith, respecting our authentic selves, each other, and our planet. Central Presbyterian Church is progressive and LGBTQIA+ inclusive.   https://www.centralpreskc.org/   On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

CREATING REFUGE FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host David Bell speak with Mushim Patricia Ikeda, Buddhist teacher, writer, & consultant.  She teaches meditation retreats for people of color, women, and social justice activists nationally. https://www.mushimikeda.com/ Mushim has become widely known for her down-to-earth, humorous, and penetrating approach to Dharma and social transformation.  Mushim has taught primarily at the East Bay Meditation Center in downtown Oakland, CA. Her work is based in values of cultural humility, acknowledging the wisdom that is ever-present in individuals and collectives, and the need for expression, empowerment, and co-creative self-determination in marginalized communities. Mushim has been featured in the award-winning documentary film Between the Lines: Asian American Women’s Poetry and as one of three subjects in the documentary Acting on Faith: Women’s New Religious Activism in America, distributed by the Pluralism Project at Harvard University. As a writer, Mushim is the recipient of the Alice Hayes Fellowship from the Ragdale Foundation.  She has been named an expert panelist of the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks. She received an honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from the Starr King School for the Ministry. David and Mushim discuss Buddhist philosophy and finding common ground. The criminal justice system is a whirlwind of human emotions and values. At the same time, almost all criminal cases resolve by agreement. How does this happen?  How can we assure agreement?  How can we avoid conflict? Many of the people who enter doors to Buddhist practice are seeking spiritual practices and spiritual community to alleviate suffering connected to loneliness and disconnection, feeling "less than," self-hatred, anxiety, and trauma resulting from discrimination, violence, poverty, oppression and abuse. Buddhist and other wisdom-based teachings and liberatory healing practices help us heal in culturally appropriate ways. There needs to be an evolution far beyond protest. This calls for a rigorous, comprehensive reimagining of work, of education, of how we feed ourselves and take care of one another. All of us can become realistic visionaries -- not "why can't we all get along" daydreamers, but people who are imagining and then manifesting new ways of doing things with commitment and rigor. We need to be okay with failure, and keep trying.   We’ll play our calendar at the midpoint of the hour. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. Calendar for the week of September 30th: Legal Aid of Western Missouri provides free civil legal services to low-income and vulnerable people in Jackson CTY Missouri. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Terri Wilke speak with Lamonte McIntyre, Co-Founder of Miracle of Innocence. https://www.miracleofinnocence.org/ Since July 2017, Miracle of Innocence, a local organization, has helped free four innocent men and women. Miracle of Innocence supports retrials for incarcerated individuals and continuously provides care for the exonerated when they return back into society. State departments of corrections and reentry programs do not have adequate assistance when incarcerated people are freed. With community support, Miracle of Innocence is able to help provide these individuals with the following care services: habitation, identification, communication, transportation, occupation, mental health counseling, adult mentorship, food, and clothing.   When he was a teenager, Lamonte McIntyre was wrongfully convicted for a double homicide in Kansas City, Kansas.  He spent the years from 1994 until 2017, 23 years – in prison for a crime he did not commit.  Lamonte was exonerated with a certificate of innocence by the State of Kansas in 2017.  Roger Golubski, a Kansas City, Kansas police detective, was central to Lamonte’s conviction. Lamonte’s mother, Rosie, at one time also an employee of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department and Lamonte filed a civil lawsuit against the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and that lawsuit was settled in 2022.  The lawsuit alleged that Roger Golubski sexually harassed Rosie and others and manufactured evidence against Rosie’s son, Lamonte, in retaliation for her rejection of Golubski’s advances. Still, during this time, Golubski was promoted to Captain and allowed to fully retire by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department.  After his retirement in 2010, Roger Golubski went to work for the Edwardsville, Kansas Police Department. FINALLY, in September of 2022, Roger Golubski was indicted for federal charges including allegedly abusing his authority as a law enforcement officer, kidnapping, assaulting, raping.  In a separate case, Golubski is charged with aiding in the operation of a sex trafficking ring. This ring allegedly targeted several young women, including a minor.   Golubski has not yet spent a day in prison.  He is currently on house arrest.  His trial will open on December 2, 2024 at the Carlson Federal Courthouse in Topeka Kansas.  It is scheduled to be held three days each week until its end, which is anticipated to be in January, 2025.   We’ll play our calendar at the midpoint of the hour. More² will close our hour with an explanation of the rally they are planning for the trial of Roger Golubski.  Federal trials are open to the public. Furthermore, More² is asking federal authorities to take a broad look at law enforcement in Kansas City, Kansas.  Measures must be taken to prevent criminal law enforcement from ruining the lives of citizens of the community.   On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. calendar for the week of September 23rd: Legal Aid of Western Missouri can provide free civil legal services to low-income and vulnerable people who live in Jackson CTY MO. Bishop Frank and Lady Carmen Douglas of Beth-Judah Ministries lost their son, Cameron, when he was shot and killed at the age of 23. Cameron left behind a baby girl. Frank Douglas was distraught at seeing his granddaughter left fatherless and made it his mission to see that such tragedy would not happen to another family. Douglas saw an opportunity for community growth. Knowing the lack of positive father figures in Black American culture, Douglas was empathetic to families in similar situations. If certain deficits could be healed, he believed, violent crime by Black youth would decrease. And so, Heart of the Father Initiative was born.  They want to help you discover your purpose via Innovative Seed Group, This or That, Advantage Love.   On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host David Bell’s Finding Common Ground Series, part 6 as he speaks his guest, Erik Hulse, teacher at Midwest Alliance for Mindfulness and former police officer.  They discuss how mindfulness can help us find common ground in emotionally charged situations. However, by cultivating mindfulness, individuals are better equipped to approach conflict with a calm and clear mind, allowing them to see the situation objectively and respond in a more productive way. Within the past few decades, there has been a surge of interest in the investigation of mindfulness.   Mindfulness has been integrated into Western medicine and psychology. Mindfulness brings about various positive psychological effects, including increased subjective well-being, reduced psychological symptoms and emotional reactivity, and improved behavioral regulation. Stay tuned to learn how to turn your mindfulness on. MEET 3 DAUGHTERS AND 1000 SONS; KANSAS APPLESEED ADDRESSES DRIVERS LICENSE SUSPENSION B/C OF UNPAID COURT FEES AND FINES

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in Monday to hear host Bev Livingston speak with Sandra Kay Keely, Executive Director of 2 Daughters and 1000 Sons. https://3daughtersand1000sons.info/   The 3 Daughters and 1000 Sons story began with a passion to relieve the devastation communities of color feel as a result of mass incarceration.   Sandra Kay Keely, was stunned in 1988 with the news that her only brother, Calvin Keeley, was being sentenced to 50 years in a Michigan State prison. 48% of the approximately 206,000 individuals serving life and ‘virtual life’ sentences are African American, and 15% are Latino according to The Sentencing Project numbers from 2018. That began her journey down a path to impact the lives of the justice involved through advocacy that includes career and housing development, as well as court supervision.  3 Daughters and 1000 Sons is a three-legged stool that supports family reunification, neighborhood revitalization, and economic freedom. Their dedicated team of experts and advocates work tirelessly to promote fairness, equality, and rehabilitation. Their mission is to revitalize families, communities, and economic aspirations of individuals impacted by the criminal justice system.  We want to transform the criminal justice system and build a brighter future. After the calendar, in the second half of our hour, host Terri Wilke will speak with Mike Fonkert, Deputy Director of Kansas Appleseed. https://www.kansasappleseed.org/ As Deputy Director, Mike oversees policy initiatives, manages the Just Campaign, and works with communities, policymakers and legislators on issues related to juvenile justice, criminal justice and child welfare. Kansas Appleseed is a justice center network that works to advance the rule of law, reduce poverty, and combat discrimination. In 2021, Mike Fonkert, campaign director for Kansas Appleseed, said that suspending licenses for unpaid court fees and fines is an ineffective policy that can worsen poverty and economic harms in Kansas. Fonkert also said that ending this practice should apply retroactively to anyone whose license is currently suspended for this reason. We’ll learn the status of the campaign.
