Kaveena A.S. Bullock is the daughter of a preacher who has made her mark in the world. She graduated with her Master’s Degree, having majored in English and Writing Studies. During her time at Kean University, her research interests were Black American Empowerment Related Issues and Politics such as language politics, sociolinguists, general linguist studies, and racial injustices. Her intense studying and hard work allowed her to produce excellent research and projects such as “Blackfishing”: Unfolding the Issues of Online Appropriation, Small Bites of Knowledge, and How the Representation of African Americans onTelevision Affects the Mind in Reality. She also had the opportunity to present Small Bites of Knowledge during Kean University’s 2019 Research Days along with some of her colleagues.
Upon completing her Master’s Degree, Ms. Bullock wrote her M.A. Thesis, “You Sound Black...”: An Academic Dive in Black American Vernacular English and Reclaiming its History, where she presents five chapters (History, Education, Community, Power, and Identity), to unfold the issues concerning Black Americans’ language and racial issues. In her thesis, she discontinues the terms “Ebonics” and “African American Vernacular English” (AAVE) and presents her new definition, “Black American Vernacular English (BAVE).” This thesis was presented in White Paper form and also in an atypical “online newspaper,” where she created a multimodal thread of information, text, video, and images to give readers a new visual insight into the language of Black Americans. In February of 2020, Ms. Bullock launched her own company, KandidKaveena, LLC, where she offers various services such as proofreading and social media managing services to help those who are looking to grow their business and take it to the next level. As a world traveler, she intends to use her international experiences to enhance her knowledge of other cultures and languages. Her interests include reading academic influencers such as Lisa Delpit, James Baldwin, Sonja L. Lanehart, and Nikki Giovanni, watching documentaries and films, and being around her family. Ms. Bullock continues to create a new and exciting path for the new generation.
