    Sacramento City and County Updates | Breast Cancer Risks for AAPI Women | Dia de los Muertos at The California Museum

    Updates on gun safety proposals, budget surveys and hemp sales in Sacramento. A new study looks at breast cancer findings in the AAPI community. Finally, the California Museum’s celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Sacramento City and County Updates With the election less than two weeks away, a lot of attention is focused on state and national races. But major business is still being conducted on the local level in Sacramento, addressing topics ranging from gun safety to budgetary concerns and public health measures to ban hemp products. CapRadio Sacramento Government Reporter Kristin Lam provides an update on some of the major issues. Breast Cancer Risks for AAPI Women Dr. Scarlett Lin Gomez is a professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at University of California San Francisco, and joins Insight to discuss the increased breast cancer risk among Asian American and Pacific Islander women. Dr. Gomez is also part of the first long-term cancer study of the AAPI community. The latest breast cancer findings were published in a report from the American Cancer Society. Dia de los Muertos at The California Museum Día de los Muertos is a time-honored tradition that celebrates life, death, and remembrance. This vibrant holiday has deep roots in Mexican culture, and its observance has spread across California, blending art, history, and cultural expression. The California Museum recently hosted its 11th annual Día de los Muertos Fiesta, unveiling a new exhibit titled “Arte de Inspiración: Día de los Muertos 2024.” The exhibit showcases altars created by artists, each honoring influential figures from California’s history, with a focus on activism and social justice. We’ll learn more about the exhibit from Artist Adrián Arias and  Amanda Meeker, Executive Director of the California Museum.

    Unpacking Prop 34 | UC Davis Arboretum Fall Plant Sale | ‘CREEP - A Rogue Halloween'

    The controversy surrounding Prop 34. UC Davis Arboretum provides gardening tips ahead of its Fall Plant Sale. Finally, ‘CREEP - A Rogue Halloween’ cabaret show is coming to Sacramento. Unpacking Prop 34 California voters will make a decision on Prop 34 this November. The initiative would limit certain health care provider spending, and is sponsored by the California Apartment Association. However, the proposition has also been called a “revenge measure” targeting the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and its president, Michael Weinstein.  Los Angeles Times reporters Andrew Khouri and Liam Dillon join Insight to unpack this proposition, the connection to rent control measures, and larger questions about the influence of special interests. UC Davis Arboretum Fall Plant Sale If you didn’t have a green thumb before the pandemic, there’s a good chance you do now. The National Gardening Association reports that 80% of U.S. households took up gardening during the lockdown—and interest hasn't faded. As of last year, eight out of ten households were still gardening. Whether you're curious about buying your first houseplant and keeping it alive, or a seasoned gardener dealing with overflowing flower beds, the UC Davis Arboretum can help. Their annual Fall Plant Sale is this weekend, offering native plants and expert advice. Kitty Bolte is a horticulturist at the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden and explains how to get the best from your fall plants.     Unpacking the arguments for and against Measure R in the Central Valley. Why Republican registration is ticking up among California voters. Finally, Sacramento artist Uli Smith’s new exhibit "be/long/ing" at Sac State. Mandatory Drug Treatment Under Measure R A measure on the ballot in the Central Valley is raising a debate about welfare and drug screening. Known as Measure R, the initiative would require people who receive general assistance benefits and are suspected of having substance abuse disorders to undergo mandatory drug screening and treatment. Marijke Rowland, Senior Health Equity Reporter at the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative joins Insight to break down the arguments opposing and supporting Measure R, and why punitive approaches to combat substance abuse have been gaining popularity. CapRadio is a partner of the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative A ‘Reddening’ Shift in CA Voters A new report from the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California has found a subtle shift in California’s voter base, particularly among big Democratic constituencies like Latino, Black, and young voters. Recent data shows an increase in Republican registration compared to 2022, and slight declines in Democratic or No Party Preference registrations. PPIC researcher Eric McGhee breaks down the factors behind this shift, and political consultants Robin Swanson and Mike Madrid talk about the larger implications of this slight reddening in California. Uli Smith’s Exhibit ‘be/long/ing’ Sacramento’s Uli Smith uses bold colors in her work, creating vibrant visual pieces that light up the streets and office buildings where many of her works reside. Smith is embarking on a new project, one that’s a little bit different from her time painting murals around town. “be/long/ing” is Smith’s new solo exhibit at Sac State. The exhibition explores the complexities of ancestral culture, identity and belonging. There’s an opening reception this Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University Union Gallery.

    California Expands IVF Access | South Lake Tahoe’s Measure N | ‘Come Over October’ with Wine

    A new California law expands access to IVF treatment. Also, the debate over South Lake Tahoe’s Measure N on the November ballot. Finally, a new local movement known as “Come Over October” is encouraging people to experience wine country differently. California Expands IVF Access Having a baby via In vitro fertilization treatments - also known as IVF -  has been around for decades. The process can be stressful and emotional. It’s also expensive. Treatments can run in the tens of thousands of dollars, making them too expensive for those who have to pay out of pocket. A new state law now requires certain health insurers to cover fertility treatment. CalMatters Health Reporter Ana Ibarra explains when this law goes into effect, how it will improve access, as well as the barriers that still remain.  CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state. South Lake Tahoe’s Measure N A South Lake Tahoe measure on the ballot is sparking quite the debate. Measure N would allow the city of South Lake Tahoe to tax homeowners whose properties remain vacant a majority of the year. For some it’s all about providing affordable housing in one of the most popular places to live and play in California. For others, it’s an assault on their property rights. We’re going to hear arguments for and against Measure N. Amelia Richmond is the co-founder of Locals for Affordable Housing and a proponent for Yes on Measure N. Steve Teshara is the director of government relations for the Tahoe Chamber and co-chair for the No on Measure N campaign. ‘Come Over October’ with Wine This month, some people might be observing “Sober October” as they look to cut back on alcohol ahead of the holidays. This follows a larger change in drinking habits and a growing demand for mocktails and alcohol-removed beer and wine. But a new local movement is encouraging people to experience wine country differently. Insight’s wine expert Rick Kushman talks about the “Come Over October” campaign and shares an update on fall harvest.

    Push for Sac State to Join the Pac-12 | Higher Breast Cancer Deaths in Black Women | Preston Castle Haunted House Tour

    The push for Sac State athletics to join the Pac-12. Also, understanding higher breast cancer deaths in Black women. Finally, Amador County’s historic Preston Castle offers haunted house tours. Push for Sac State to Join the Pac-12 There is a push to take Sacramento State Athletics to the next level. The SAC 12 Committee came into the spotlight a little over a month ago, with the goal of getting the Hornets to join the Pac-12 athletic conference as an FBS school. State Senator Angelique Ashby is the co-chair of the SAC 12 Committee and joins Insight with the pathway to getting into a top tier NCAA conference. Higher Breast Cancer Deaths in Black Women is a Chief and Associate Professor in the Division of Breast Surgery at City of Hope, with research that investigates the higher rate of breast cancer mortality among Black women, when compared to other races and ethnicities. The latest findings were published in a report from the American Cancer Society, which found that Black women have the lowest survival rate for every stage of breast cancer, and a 38% higher death rate when compared to white women. Preston Castle Haunted House Tour  Located in Amador County, Preston Castle has stood the test of time. Built more than a century ago in Ione to rehabilitate juvenile offenders, it was almost demolished and then condemned. But this historic building has survived to this day - with eerie stories to tell. Preston Castle Foundation President Karl Knobelauch joins Insight with its history, as well as to discuss its haunted adventure tours for the month of October.

    CA’s 13th Congressional ‘Debate at the State’ | Teatro Espejo’s 50th Anniversary | Inaugural Sacramento Poetry Week

    Previewing the debate for California’s 13th Congressional District. Sacramento’s Teatro Espejo celebrates 50 years of performance with “The Language of Flowers.” Finally, the first-ever Sacramento Poetry Week runs from Oct. 20-26. CA’s 13th Congressional ‘Debate at the State’  California is home to a handful of bellwether Congressional districts that could determine control of the House of Representatives in November. Three of them are in the Central Valley, including California’s 13th District. On Oct. 25 the two candidates for the seat - incumbent Republican Rep. John Duarte and Democratic challenger Adam Gray - will face off in a debate at the State Theatre in Modesto, sponsored by the nonprofit Central Valley Journalism Collaborative. CVJC Executive Editor Joe Kieta and moderator Victor Patton, Editor-in-Chief of the Merced Focus join Insight to preview the “Debate at the State,” as well as the major issues that voters are considering when picking their representative. Teatro Espejo’s 50th Anniversary For half a century, Teatro Espejo has been at the heart of Sacramento’s Chicano and Latino theater scene, sharing stories that often go untold. As the company kicks off its 50th anniversary, they are presenting "The Language of Flowers," a Chicano adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" by Edit Villarreal. Artistic Director Manuel José Pickett and Nicole Limón, Associate Artistic Director of Teatro Espejo, and founder of Matriarchy Theatre from Teatro Espejo, to talk about the significance of this production and the company’s long legacy in Sacramento. Additionally, actors Antonio Hernandez and Kimberly Aguilar perform a scene from "The Language of Flowers" as Romeo and Juliet. Inaugural Sacramento Poetry Week Sacramento Poetry Day was first declared in 1986 to honor the groundbreaking anthology “Landing Signals,” and since its revival in 2022 has celebrated the power of the spoken word. This year, the city is expanding the tradition and launching the first-ever Sacramento Poetry Week from Oct. 20-26. Sacramento Poet Laureate Andru Defeye talks about how the change came to be, how the event is celebrating multiculturalism and inclusion, and the importance of providing community support to poets.

    Schools Struggle to Keep Kids Cool During Heat Waves | Sac State to Build New Hornet Stadium | Majel Connery’s New Song Cycle ‘Elderflora’

    Some California schools are struggling to keep students cool during heat waves. Also, Sacramento State will break ground on a new Hornet stadium. Finally, classical composer Majel Connery’s song cycle “Elderflora.” Schools Struggle to Keep Kids Cool During Heat Waves CalMatters California Divide and Environmental Justice Reporter Alejandra Reyes-Velarde shares her reporting which found that an estimated one in five K-12 public schools in the state has no air conditioning, and another 10% need repair. She joins Insight to explain how underfunded schools are struggling to keep classrooms cool as heat waves intensify. CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state. Sac State to Build New Hornet Stadium Sacramento State is taking Hornets sports to the next level with plans to break ground on a new state-of-the-art stadium. Sac State Director of Athletics Mark Orr explains what a multi-use stadium adds to the campus and region, as well as the benefits to students beyond sports. Majel Connery’s New Song Cycle ‘Elderflora’  is a familiar voice as host of CapRadio’s podcast A Music of Their Own. The classical composer joins Insight with the release of her latest work, a song cycle titled Elderflora that she will be performing in Sacramento on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7pm.

    Bird Flu Cases in the Central Valley | Iron Rose FC’s New Expansion | Parent ImpactU Oak Park

    California’s first human contracted bird flu cases in the Central Valley. Also, Iron Rose FC women’s soccer goes undefeated in its inaugural year. Finally, a career workshop in Oak Park for middle and high school students. Bird Flu Cases in the Central Valley The H5N1 bird flu virus has infected millions of birds across the country since it started spreading in 2022, and made the jump to cattle last year. The virus is spreading across dairies in California’s Central Valley, and just last week California’s first human cases of bird flu were also confirmed in the region. Kerry Klein, Associate Editor and Reporter at Valley Public Radio (KVPR) in Fresno joins Insight to talk about the risks that H5N1 poses to cattle, people and the larger dairy industry, and the measures being taken to combat the spread. Iron Rose FC’s New Expansion A Roseville women’s soccer team has wrapped up its inaugural season with an undefeated record. Now, the club is looking at some major expansion plans in its second year.  Evin Nadaner, Managing Partner at Iron Rose FC and COO of Roseville Soccer Club talks about the team’s first-year success, plans to develop young soccer talent in the region, and Iron Rose’s new men’s team which will start playing in “The League for Clubs” in 2025. Parent ImpactU Oak Park This weekend, a free workplace readiness event is coming to Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood, with the goal of closing the career awareness gap for parents and guardians. Parent ImpactU Oak Park will be held on Oct. 12 at the Oak Park Community Center.  Mitchell Leach II, Founder and President of the nonprofit Interns 2 Pros talks about the importance of introducing parents and children to career opportunities early, and the different paths that students can follow after finishing high school - from college to trade school, to apprenticeships.

    Jewish and Palestinian-American Communities One Year After Oct. 7 | 2024 California Economic Summit

    Checking in with Jewish and Palestinian-American communities in the Sacramento region one year after the Oct. 7 attacks and the start of the Israel-Hamas war. Also, the California Economic Summit is taking place this week in Sacramento. Jewish and Palestinian-American Communities One Year After Oct. 7 It's been exactly one year since the devastating Oct. 7 attacks in Israel which killed 1,200 people and resulted in 250 more being taken as hostages. As the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensifies, the ripple effects have touched communities right here in Sacramento. For many Jewish families, this is a time of profound reflection– both on the lives lost and the ongoing violence. Rabbi Yossi Grossbaum is with the Chabad Jewish Community Center in Folsom and shares how he is guiding people to mark one year since the attacks.  The Oct. 7 attacks on Israel triggered the Israel-Hamas war, a conflict that has had devastating impacts on Palestinians. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli bombings and the invasion of the Gaza Strip, and many more are suffering under a worsening humanitarian crisis. Basim Elkarra, Executive Director of CAIR Action and a Palestinian-American himself, talks about how the local Palestinian-American community is navigating one year since the Israel-Hamas war began.  2024 California Economic Summit Regional leaders from across California are gathering in Sacramento this week for the California Economic Summit, bringing together the public and private sectors on issues ranging from economic growth and sustainability to equity. Kate Gordon, CEO of California Forward talks about the importance of regional partnerships and collaboration, with the goal of building an inclusive and sustainable statewide economy.
