Joshua Hoe from "Decarceration Nation‪"‬ "Cut Loose" by Uncut.fm

Welcome to Episode 10 of Cut Loose. If you’re listening to this in America, I hope that you’re ready to enjoy a beautiful Thanksgiving.

I don’t know if I’ll be home for Thanksgiving yet! I’ve been visiting family in Germany and am now stuck in quarantine, with this next wave of COVID that’s sweeping across the continent. But it’s been a good opportunity to slow down and reflect.

If you ask me what I’m thankful for this year, one thing I think I’d say are *moments.* Moments are something you’re going to start hearing a lot about from us at Uncut.fm. Moments of audio but also, on a more personal level, moments here with my family.

I’m also thankful for podcasters like today’s guest, Joshua Hoe, the host of “Decarceration Nation.”

If you’re interested in the topic of prison reform, you may have heard of Josh. “Decarceration Nation” hasn’t quite reached Ear Hustle fame — and if you haven’t heard Ear Hustle, you should definitely check it out, we reference it more than once in this conversation — but his show has become a reference point for people across the political spectrum who, like him, are interested in radically reimagining criminal justice in America. He’s interviewed people such as author Clint Smith, CNN’s Van Jones, and law professors John Pfaff and Rachel Barkow.

I wanted to talk to Josh to better understand what it means to use your show as a tool for advocacy. How do you attract attention to your cause in such a crowded social media world? What does it means to show up for your cause, and your work, every single week?
