Honda's Grom Success: PR Manager Colin Miller on Small Bikes, Customization, and Expanding Markets

In Today’s epsisode, we meet Colin Miller, Honda PR and Marketing manage.r Colin discusses the success of Honda's small bikes, particularly the Grom, at the Small Bore Barber vintage event. These bikes, including the Navi, Monkey, and Trail 125, have gained popularity due to their affordability and approachable nature, serving as a gateway to motorcycling for many, especially younger generations. Honda identified the Grom's popularity and has seen great success since its release in 2014, making it their top-selling street bike. The event showcased various customizations, and some riders even progress to larger Honda models after starting on a Grom. Honda develops and designs many products, including generators, ATVs, and side by sides, in the US, making it the largest employer in Ohio. The company manufactures a significant percentage of its products sold in the US in North and South Carolina and frequently gathers feedback from customers. The 2021 Grom received upgrades, including a new engine and transmission, due to this customer feedback. Smaller displacement bikes, like the Grom, are growing in popularity for daily commuting due to their fuel efficiency and affordability. Colin shares his personal experience of using a Grom as a daily commuter and for racing. The conversation touches upon the idea that smaller bikes can serve as a training tool or gateway to bigger bikes and track days. Honda transitioned from motorcycle production to automobile manufacturing in the late 1960s, catering to an older generation with more disposable income and the growing demand for larger cars in the US market. Today, Honda continues to expand its offerings, including marine engines, water pumps, and electric vehicles. The Honda team expresses their mission to provide various products for different needs and hopes that customers enjoy using them. Colin shares his positive experience with a Honda generator during the event, and the team mentions upcoming events, including adventure rides and the Overland Expo, where they will showcase their products.

Meet 'Rowdy' Rodney Sargent: Street Freestyle Legend & Guinness Record Holder from Atlanta

While at Small Bore I had the fortune to sit down with one of my local Atl buddies and get to know him a bit better. Meet “Rowdy” Rodney Sargent! Rodney is a professional Street Freestyle athlete and performer based in Atlanta, Georgia. His passion for motorcycles began with a 1971 Honda CT70 Mini Trail, which he still owns, and has grown into a remarkable career. Moving to Atlanta in 1990, Rodney was captivated by the city's cultural diversity and soon found his calling in stunt riding. Since 2004, he has performed, competed, and made appearances at over 200 events across the United States, establishing himself as one of the top street freestyle entertainers in the country. Rodney owns the two-time Guinness World Record-holding team, Anger Management Street Extreme Entertainment, and the World Famous AM Stoppie School. Together, they have thrilled millions of fans at over 300 events worldwide, performing at some of the country’s largest motorsports venues, including XDL, Stuntwars, NHRA, and NASCAR. He holds Guinness World Records for the longest and fastest nose wheelies on a sport bike. Beyond his professional achievements, Rodney has faced personal challenges, including a battle with leukemia, which has given him the mental strength to overcome adversity. He is deeply involved in the motorcycle community, particularly the Honda Grom culture, known for its affordability, customizability, and large following in Atlanta. Rodney is also vocal about his concerns over aggressive law enforcement tactics towards motorcyclists and remains committed to pushing the underground sport of Streetbike Freestyle stuntriding into the mainstream in a positive direction.
