Sibel: Caring for her adult son as a single parent and solo carer

Sibel's life took an unexpected turn when her son Ethan contracted pneumococcal meningitis at just two years old, leaving him with an acquired brain injury. Now twenty one years old, Ethan defies expectations and thrives despite his disabilities.  Sibel has faced challenges along the way from navigating the complexities of the NDIS to grappling with her own personal struggles.  As carers, we're seen as informal supports. Everything outside of that is a formal support which would be paid support workers. My mind still grapples with this. It's very hard for somebody going through the day-to-day struggles of caring for someone with a disability to be considered 100% as an informal support. Care to Share is an Impact Studios podcast hosted by Prudence Granger, Carer-in-Residence for the Carer Knowledge Exchange. It features open and honest conversations with carers discussing the challenges, roadblocks, and joys of caring.  Produced by Siobhan Moylan. Sound Design by Melissa May. Kiara: Caring for her autistic son with global developmental delay

Kiara’s caring role started when she was eight years old. At twenty-four, Kiara is a devoted mother to Rider, her three-year-old autistic son with global developmental delay. Rider's autism is characterized by severe sensory sensitivities and restrictive eating and other common symptoms she discusses in this episode.   Her son is Kiara’s inspiration and purpose and drives her determination.  When I have conversations with people outside of this world and I say ‘Carer’ they instantly think, ‘Support Worker, Nurse.’ Yeah, no.   Carers are hidden. We are hidden behind our roles. Everything we do is hidden. Care to Share is an Impact Studios podcast hosted by Prudence Granger, Carer-in-Residence for the Carer Knowledge Exchange. Najla: Caring for her husband with early onset dementia

Coming from a Middle Eastern Muslim background, Najla brings a unique perspective to the table. With decades of experience in vocational education and training, she's not just an expert in equity, diversity, and inclusion. As a carer for her husband dealing with younger onset dementia, and a carer for her father with dementia, Najla reshapes the way we look at disability and the care experience.   My husband was diagnosed with dementia early onset, and my kids were devastated when I made the decision to continue to work. I expected it from the community. I expected it from my parents. I did not expect it from my adult children. We then had this terrible conflict.
