    3 signs you are playing small and 2 questions to ask yourself to shift into playing big now

    What does ‘playing small’ mean?  It means being less than what is possible for you. We can all get complacent as we get older. At school we get used to relying on others tell us how or where to grow, but there are fewer expectations on us to grow and develop once we leave school. Unless we challenge and motivate ourselves to grow, there’s no guarantee that we’ll keep expanding. When we’re not stretching, growing, or expanding we’re staying stagnant.  And when we stay stagnant we can go backwards, as our comfort zone starts to shrink. In this episode I share three signs that you are playing small, and ask you two important questions that will help you shift into playing big – and get playful about your personal growth. “It's very easy to start playing small. And what do I mean by that? Well, it's when you are being less than what is possible for you, not living up to your full potential. You keep doing what you did last year, two years ago, five years ago, maybe with a few new things you've learned, but nothing much is stretching or growing. You're playing small because you're not expanding. But it's not obvious how to expand, and so we get complacent. It's very stagnant and we go backwards.     3 reasons why praising yourself makes you a better leader

    How often do you praise yourself? Compliment yourself? Point out all the things you admire about yourself?  Or are you afraid of being ‘full of yourself’? Getting complacent? Most people love getting great feedback from others. But what about from yourself? Why does praising yourself make you a better leader? In this episode I share three reasons why praising yourself is an important element in being a grounded, courageous and successful leader. We are not talking fake compliments or self-arrogance. This is something entirely different.  Listen to explore what happens and becomes possible for you when you start praising yourself more, and remembering you are worthy. “No one likes a needy person. It’s just not attractive. And there is no leader power in being needy. It's important to praise ourselves so we don't need it from others. When you work damn hard on a project, it's important that you tell yourself, “Well done. I'm so incredibly proud of you,” because then you don't need it from others. It's nice if they notice and take the time to say it, but it's important not to need it. Because then you’re not in your power.     How to be in control

    Do you like to feel like you’re in control? What do you fear might happen if you’re not in control? Are you holding life tightly – and shutting yourself off from surprises and new possibilities, ideas, innovations? Our world is fast. As we’ve learned over the past couple of years, anything could happen at any moment. We can’t control what’s on the outside of us. But we can learn to feel in control in our INNER world, and then we can handle the pace of life better.  It’s time to slow down, ground yourself, and be in your inner calm. I this episode I share several different ideas to help you feel more in control – by letting go. “Let me ask you, do you like to feel like you're in control? Our world is fast. I don't see it slowing down at all, it is moving faster and faster. Let's be clear, you're never in control. We're not in control. Something big or small might happen any moment. But we do like to feel or believe or think that we are in control. So how can you be in control? There's no chance of ever controlling what's on the outside. But what does make a difference is slowing down. When we are grounded and more calm, that's when we can handle the fast pace.     If you’re part of an executive team, where does your loyalty lie within your company or organisation? Do you think of yourself as head of your department first? Or as an executive team member? In this episode I talk about how when leaders think of themselves FIRST AND FOREMOST as senior leadership team members, everything shifts and the whole team becomes more productive and impactful. Because you’re not there to defend the needs of your department. (Or to pump up your own ego!) As executive team members, you’re all jointly responsible for the whole of your organisation. You’re all in it together. And when you take joint responsibility, you take away blame – and start to build deep seated trust. Sound simple? Well, it’s not quite as easy as it sounds.  So what is required for this to work? Listen now. [3:04] “What's the one shift that all executives, all members of a senior leadership team need to make? Well, they need to think of themselves first and foremost as executive team members, as senior leadership team members. Instead of first and foremost, CFO, first and foremost, Marketing Director, group HRG, HR director.” [4:15] “How good a team member are you? Or are you mostly out to secure the agenda of the marketing team? Or even worse, you could just be there for your own glory, your own personal ego.” [05:18] “Together, we are all responsible for the whole of this organisation.” [6:52] “It is so different when we could feel like we're in it all together. And we're all jointly responsible.” [7:31] “We have to find ways to respect each other, to see each others' credibility, to build deep-seated trust, which means you feel like you can trust them, they have your back, and you have theirs.     Why is forgiveness important in leadership? Forgiveness is often something that’s kept for therapy, not the workplace. So what’s the connection? When you’re holding a grudge or you’re angry at a previous boss or organisation for a past situation (such as the way something was handled, redundancy, being passed over for promotion, unfair dismissal) feeling sad, angry or disappointed is a normal response. But if it’s been a while and you’re still feeling it, you haven’t shifted. You’re still stuck – and if you want to move forward and increase your leadership power, you need to get unstuck!     Why do some people seem to love their life so much more than others – no matter what it looks like? In my experience there are four very simple things you can do to start loving your life more, even if it’s not perfect.  1. Tell yourself you love your life Find your happiness from the inside out: what you tell yourself has a huge impact on whether you love your life or not.  2. Be present Joy is right here, right now.  So don’t miss this moment! Something changes in us when we focus on the present moment and remember that whatever your mind is distracting you with isn’t helpful, relevant or useful. 3. Practice gratitude and appreciation It’s simple: when we’re grateful, more good things happen to us. No matter what your situation, we all have things to be grateful for. Don’t forget to appreciate all the little things.  4. Do more things you love more of the time Stop bargaining with yourself (‘If I do X, then I get to do Y.’) Give yourself permission to do more of what you love, starting now. There’s always time to do what you love - and when you believe this, it becomes true.
