Dementia Prevention with Emily Clionsky, MD and Mitchell Clionsky, PhD

Join this incredible power-hour as we discover ways to improve our brain’s future! Welcoming special guests, Emily Clionsky, MD and Mitchell Clionsky, PhD, authors of the new book DEMENTIA PREVENTION: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain (Hopkins Press, April 4, 2023). And their message is a clear one – dementia is not inevitable! Furthermore, it is preventable in 1 out of 2 people! But that isn’t just their opinion, their work is deeply steeped in research. Drs. Clionsky, a physician and neuropsychologist couple have cared for their own parents with dementia, and talk about ways to improve your brain's future, many of which may seem surprising. From vitamins, to your activities, social infrastructure, even mental outlooks, and even how you breathe while you sleep and so much more can play a significant role in how dementia may impact our lives. In fact, in Dementia Prevention: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain, they share 20 factors that impact dementia risk, including 17 that are changeable in adulthood as well as proven psychological methods to change your habits and health to alter your brain’s future. They educate us on the various types of dementia and clear up some confusion we may have on this topic. But in this episode, they also offer a cliff-notes and layman’s understanding of what exactly is happening when dementia takes hold, allowing us to better understand how we can utilize our stakeholder opportunity to circumvent its potential onset. But this neuropsychologist team also focuses on areas often overlooked such as hearing, vision, and the many health factors such as blood pressure, exercise and sugar levels that are important to be aware of as it relates to dementia. They echo a welcoming sense of empowerment for everyone, even those who may have a genetic predisposition for dementia, to take control and change several risk factors in their favor. Together, they have treated more than 25,000 patients with cognitive impairment and are responsible for developing the Memory Orientation Screening Test (MOST), which has been used by hundreds of doctors. DEMENTIA PREVENTION: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain is the culmination of 45 years of extensive clinical evaluation and treatment. It brings together proven science from a wide spectrum of medical specialties -- ones that often do not talk to one another or read the others’ research. Drs. Emily and Mitchell Clionsky skip the fads, the unsupported claims of advertised products, and fringe theories. Emily Clionsky, MD is an internal medicine doctor with 25 years of experience and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She has treated thousands of patients with memory loss at her private practice. Mitchell Clionsky, PhD is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with 45 years of experience evaluating and treating patients with cognitive impairment, dementia, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury. Together, they developed the Memory Orientation Screening Test (MOST), which has been used by hundreds of doctors. They live in Springfield, MA. A Worthwhile Life with Michael Westover

Have you ever wondered what makes life worthwhile? In this Aging GreatFULLy power-hour we take a deep dive into exploring what gives life meaning–in simple, yet powerful ways—that result in life enrichment and transformation. Welcoming special guest and author of the perfect new book for this conversation, A Worthwhile Life: How to Find Meaning, Build Connection, and Cultivate Purpose, Michael Westover. Westover helps us understand the distinction between the purpose of life and the meaning of life. Michael Westover looked in the mirror one day and wondered what the point of it was. He had a successful career in health care, a stable family, and great friendships. Yet, he felt aimless. His life was full—meetings to further his career, hours of TV, activities with his children—but was it worthwhile? Westover wondered why countless people coasted through life as he had, feeling lost and disconnected, while others approached each day feeling worthy and valuable. He wanted answers. But also, He wanted to feel worthwhile. So, he embarked on a journey for insight. But Westover didn’t just look to the modern era for clues to solve this question…he dug through centuries of research and set out on a philosophical passage to find connection and meaning. What he discovered significantly changed the way he lives his life! He learned that living a life that matters is simpler than we may imagine! And following five types of commitment that are research-proven to give life more meaning, we can all build a worthwhile life and avoid the cycle of distractions. Westover gives advice from being a good neighbor, human steward or even what to do when life becomes overwhelming. He discusses the value of belief in a higher source, spirituality, faith or religion and how those practices can tether and build a sense of belonging and community as well as foster positive individual ideals. He answers the question as to whether its better to have a happy life or a meaningful life and why and even what a meaningful life looks life as we grow older. He discusses the power of nature, the importance of leaving your comfort zone, how to break out of a slump and so much more! From beginning to end, Westover shares wisdom, philosophy, stories and cites sources that educate, inspire and enlighten us towards better understanding A Worthwhile Life! Michael Westover is a writer, speaker, health care industry executive and graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Westover’s website, www.echoesofmeaning.com, is a collection of more than 30 articles about human connection, including articles of family, business, religion, and self-improvement. Many of his pieces attempt to look at ancient truths from new angles to make them applicable to modern life. When he is not writing, you can find him coaching one of his kids’ teams, hiking in the Columbia River Gorge, or wakeboarding when it’s nice outside and snowboarding when it’s not. You can learn more about his work, connect with him and purchase his book, A Worthwhile Life, by visiting him at www.echoesofmeaning.com.
