    Leveling The Playing Field: Cheryl Reeve, Head Coach/GM of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx

    Leveling The Playing Field: Dari Passarello Herman, Owner of SparklySoul Headbands

    This week’s guest is Dari Passarello Herman, former sports and entertainment attorney, who turned her love of running and disdain for existing headbands into a new business. She is the Owner/Creator of SparklySoul Headbands. Dari’s path is obviously unique given where she landed. Well before her entrepreneurial hustle started, however, she was blazing her own trail. As a law student, she chose to forego many of the typical steps (clerkships) and instead work directly with the those in sports and entertainment. She started out at Bob Woolfe and Associates in Boston, then she went to DC to work at FAME – another high end agency. It was while she was working as in house counsel at Nielsen that she discovered a problem that she knew she could solve – and the rest is history!     Our guest this week is Sarah Axelson, Sr. Director of Advocacy at the Women’s Sports Foundation. Sarah was an athlete all through college and wasn’t quite sure what to do near graduation when she was alerted to an internship by a friend. She’s been with WSF ever since. She talks about her career but also talk a lot about what WSF does and how people can get involved.     Stefanie Jewett, CEO/Founder of Activvely – a fitness app that matches people together as workout buddies or activity friends – joins Bobbi-Sue on this week’s episode of LTPF. Stefanie was not a sports girl growing up and truly thought her passion was in broadcast journalism. She had many interesting internships in politics and advocacy before giving taking one more shot at broadcast journalism. Doing so landed her a gig at CNN, where she stayed for 5 years before turning her attention to her business idea. This conversation includes a lot of discussion on women supporting other women, what tech startup life is like, and how sometimes you have to take a leap of faith.     Leveling The Playing Field: Shelly Boyum-Breen, Author & Founder of the Foundation IX & Let Me Play Grants

    This week, Bobbi-Sue speaks with children’s book author, Shelly Boyum-Breen. She is the author of the “Shelly Bean the Sports Queen” books. Growing up in MN, Shelly spent countless hours on the basketball court, neighborhood hockey rinks and local golf courses. She spent five years in the education field, coaching college and high school basketball and tennis.  Boyum-Breen then worked with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx organization.  Shelly served with the organization for four years and later moved into a sales consulting role serving the Lynx, the New York Liberty and the 10th Anniversary WNBA All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden. Before writing the “Shelly Bean” series, Boyum-Breen was the Founder of Foundation IX and the Let Me Play grants supporting Minnesota girls’ participation in sports and fitness.  She and Bobbi-Sue talk about the impact that sports had on them growing up, how it was their safe place, and how important it is for young girls and boys of all types to see themselves in books about sports.     Leveling The Playing Field: Celeste Bell, MLB’s Senior Director, Talent Acquisition

    Celeste Bell, the Senior Director, Talent Acquisition for Major League Baseball. is this week’s guest on the pod. Celeste’s career has been full of twists and turns much like other guests. While in school, Celeste thought she wanted to be an athletic trainer until an internship showed her maybe that wasn’t her path. She then had a couple of other internships, including one with the LPGA that lasted a year. After that, she applied… and applied… and interviewed… and nothing. So, she became a flight attendant… as one does. She keeps interviewing until finally, she landed her first full-time job with the NBA. That job leads her to her next with MLB, where she’s worked for the past 10+ years. But wait… that’s not all. She’s about to make another pivot. It’s really an incredible story. Not only is Celeste a power player in the sports industry but she also gives back. She is on the national board for Play Like a Girl,  a hip, innovative and inspiring resource for women and girls, powered by a creative online network, targeted community outreach and popular live events.     Leveling The Playing Field: Former WNBA President & CEO of Generation W, Donna Orender

    This week’s guest is Donna Orender. Donna is a powerhouse in the sports world. Not only did she play professional basketball in the original women’s basketball league, but she also spent 18 years at the PGA, and was the president of the WNBA during one of its most pivotal moments. During her time at the PGA and at the W, Donna helped create the way that professional golf and women’s basketball programming was created, packaged, and distributed. Her natural curiosity and propensity for asking “Why not?” have served her well. She is the CEO/Founder of Orender Unlimited and Generation W where she creates programming and events to empower girls and women. She wrote a book called “Wowsdom! The Girl’s Guide to the Positive and the Possible.” that focuses on teaching young girls (and the girls within us all) that they can do anything. Also in 2018, Donna was honored by the Women’s Sports Museum as with a Trailblazer award. Bobbi-Sue and Donna talk all about the various stops along Donna’s career path.     Leveling The Playing Field: America East Conference Commissioner Amy Huchthausen

    This week’s guest is America East Conference Commissioner, Amy Huchthausen. She is the first woman to lead the conference and has received many industry accolades including being named to the Sports Business Journal’s “40 under 40” and “Game Changers.” Prior to being a Commissioner at the America East, she was with the NCAA and a few other conferences for various periods of time. Amy’s leadership has helped with America East grow its profile and serve its student-athletes in a new way. This conversation goes through Amy’s career in college athletics, the amazing initiatives that the America East has started which focus on inclusivity and mental health, and, of course, her dog Lucy.
