Prayer: How should we pray for our nation and its people?

Times such as these we become more conscious of the need for God to “get involved” in what is going on around us. For the past week we’ve been hearing about Cyclone Alfred (now EX-tropical cyclone Alfred). And next weekend we have a local by-election for our State parliament member. Perhaps we don’t think so much about that one. It’s barely been mentioned in any news. What is our part and our role in praying for our nation and it’s people? 1 Tim 2:1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 Jesus teaches us to pray Some of the best known words of Jesus are when he teaches the disciples to pray in Matthew 6:9-13. One of the striking features of this seminal prayer is how it centres around “us” rather than “me” or “them”. It seems that one of Jesus emphasis about prayers of petition is IDENTIFICATION. Jesus himself models to the utmost the power of identification in both his incarnation and his cross. What about repentance – where does that fit? Let’s take a moment to wrestle with this one… Numerous times over many years I’ve heard and read about people calling for repentance on behalf of others, especially for our nation. Indicating the idea that if we (believers) repent, God will do something, that it will somehow unlock a spiritual awakening or revival for others. 2 Chronicles 7:14 is commonly cited as teaching something along those lines, but is that really what it teaches us for our nation today? Identification is important in interceding for others, but do we find in scripture any indication that we should or even can repent on behalf of others? It’s important to ground our intercession and faith on biblical foundations.

Celebrating Ten Years of Lifeway CRC Church

Dave and Caroline share briefly some reflections of significant aspects of the foundations of Lifeway Church and what God helped us imagine in the vision for what this church would be like. Back in early 2015 while gathered on Lighthouse Beach, Dave heard a whisper from the Spirit that it is “time to gather stones together” (Ecclesiastes 3). Fast forward to December 2020 and those who called Lifeway Church “home” performed a prophetic act together as a symbol of fulfilling Jesus call for us to be the “light of the world” and “a city on a hill that cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14). We are all just “broken pieces” that God shapes and renews and builds us together into something beautiful, a temple filled with His Spirit and Presence, a light that shines, a beautiful city that no one can miss – the city of the Living God! Caroline shares a significant revelation that God spoke all those years ago, a vision of the kingdom of God made visible in the church in a way that fully engages with God’s mission to our city. I see this church plant as Jesus’ plant … This is His plan … This comes from His heart for ALL people to be reached.  This church will do its best to model love as Jesus modelled love.  This church will be open to everyone. The doors will be open. This is a place for the hungry to be fed, for the poor to be provided for, for the sick to be made well, for the needy to have their needs met by Jesus.  This church will be a place where restoration, freedom and a fresh start will be the norm. Where the expectation each and every day is that lives will be changed radically by the power of Jesus Christ.  This church, spearheaded and led by the Father, son and Holy Spirit, will invest into the community.  This church will be a place where lost sheep will find a shepherd.  This church will be a place where the disenfranchised will be cared for, be reminded of Jesus’ vision for them and their lives. This church will invest into future generations without holding back. This church will be a church made up of people that resolve to live radical lives for Jesus. This church will be a bright light shining in the very darkest places. This church will see an increase of Jesus’ influence and kingship in people’s lives …. This is the cause of God’s Kingdom.  This church will be a place of celebration and joy.  I believe that we will live, work, and serve in our community (and it MUST become our community) and do real life with people.  I believe we will be in the marketplace.  I believe we will see people added to our numbers (not really about numbers, but about changed lives and hearts re-awakened to the purpose that was breathed into them by God at the moment of conception).  I believe that there may be hard times and painful moments as we walk through life with people. But I believe God will bring about outstanding testimonies that will resound around our nation for His glory.  ****I believe we will see people raised up as key leaders in the community.***** I believe we will see the name of Jesus lifted high. So high that people can’t ignore His name or His love and be drawn to His love.

    A Christ-centred and Spirit-empowered People

That is what the church is called by God to be — a Christ-centred and Spirit-empowered people, who above all else display the love of God to a lost, broken, and hurting world. Not just displayed in miracles, signs and wonders, but mores in the transformed lives of those who belong to Christ and now live by the Spirit’s power to give us a new heart and new desires. Throughout Paul’s writings in the New Testament, we see his deep concern that the Spirit-filled life is absolutely centred on the cross of Jesus Christ, and the evidence of the Spirit’s influence is the transformed lives of those who believe in Christ. That is not to say that supernatural gifts don’t matter. It is not an either-or situation; as we read, “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit…” (1 Corinthians 14:1, NIV). But in the balance of the amount of “air-time” given to matters of the Holy Spirit, it becomes clear that Paul’s emphasis is we are to “Let love be your highest goal” (1 Cor. 14:1 NLT) and have the character traits that display God’s love. … and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2 The Spirit-led life is characterised by following the way of Christ as a crucified life, dying to the sin-nature and its passions and desires that work against the Spirit’s will for us . Then we are free to live by the Spirit, following the Holy Spirit’s leading in everything (Galatians 5:24-25). A truly Spirit-filled church is one that exalts Jesus Christ as the risen Lord over all, that proclaims a gospel with the cross of Christ as the turning point of human and world history, without which none of us would know God. And because of this, the precious and powerful gift of the Holy Spirit has come to us, God’s personal presence and power indwelling each one of us who believes and trusts in Jesus.
