Islanders Anxiety - Research and Development

Islanders Anxiety - Research and Development

Mike and Dan wrap up the Stanley Cup final, look ahead to the draft and talk some trash about ESPN's first season of hockey in two decades. With Islanders exhaustion causing them to fall on opposite sides of the watching line, they talk about how the championship series between the Avalanche and Lightning played out, how it made them feel and who they're happy for. They also look at what's on tap for the NHL offseason including some coach hirings and one important coach hiatus. In the second half, they wonder if the Islanders will make a move at the upcoming NHL draft and what longstanding player might end up being the most logical odd man out. They also talk about the lackluster broadcast presentation of ESPN and how more can often be less when it comes to hockey. Finally, they remember a special performance by an Islanders draft pick that gives them a little hope for the future.

Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Chris Simon (with guest Eric Needell)

Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Chris Simon (with guest Eric Needell)

Mike and Dan are joined by friend and longtime Islanders fan Eric Needell to talk about Chris Simon, a tough guy who packed a lot into his short time on Long Island. After a big trade, one Stanley Cup and about a million fights, Simon signed with the Islanders thanks to coach Ted Nolan, with whom he shared a special relationship. Although his big penalty minute (and outlier scoring) seasons were behind him, Simon made himself into a valuable player on a team loaded with mercenaries. But two long, shameful suspensions within a few months of each other brought his NHL career to an unceremonious close, and he faced many difficulties in his off-ice life. The guys talk about the rare highlights and sobering lowlights of a player who meant a lot to Islanders fans for a very brief period of time. Eric also tells his tale of getting to ask GM Garth Snow just how Chris Simon, of all people, ended up as a top line winger. The answer will not shock you.

Islanders Anxiety - Deep Pocketed Monsters

Islanders Anxiety - Deep Pocketed Monsters

Mike and Dan revel in the New York Rangers' demise after a terrifying playoff run, and look around the NHL at what could be a very active offseason. They talk about how the Rangers lost four straight games to the Lightning after going up two games to none and what eventually did them in, as well as the many questions they have coming up this offseason that might put Islanders fan minds at ease. Later, they look at another surprising coach firing and some possible trade targets and free agents that the Islanders could plausibly be in on (if those players are actually available). Along the way they laugh about differences in entitlement, curious lineup decisions that carry the potential for catastrophe, and how hard it is to make the NHL's third-winningest coach a finalist for your team's coaching vacancy. Oh, and the Islanders made a couple of small moves last week, too. No, for real.

Weird Islanders: The Podcast - Raffi Torres (with guest Nick Costa)

Weird Islanders: The Podcast - Raffi Torres (with guest Nick Costa)

Mike and Dan are joined by Nick Costa of the legendary Offside Tavern to talk about Raffi Torres, an infamous NHL player that most people forgot even was an Islander. Nick tells the tale of a memorable run-in he had with a young Torres that all but guaranteed he'd never forget the winger' drafting and uneventful first two seasons on The Island. They talk about his goal-free 31 games in blue-and-orange and their near universal excitement that he had been traded for defenseman Janne Niinimaa, even as Torres went on to produce for Edmonton. They marvel at two other forgotten Torres stints with other teams before diving into his tumultuous time as one of the NHL's most hated players. Along the way, Nick drops more stories about running into Islanders in various dining establishments around Long Island, including one generous prospect who spent some of his meager salary to buy a young Nick a bagel.

Islanders Anxiety - A Very Specific Type of Torture

Islanders Anxiety - A Very Specific Type of Torture

Mike and Dan ramble and rant about a range of NHL topics, from strange playoff bedfellows to prospect coverage to old guy veneration. With the Islanders' offseason in a holding pattern, the hosts are forced to face a corporate-backed rival fanbase that only emerges when certain special conditions are met, and to rely on previous enemy teams to come through for them. Making matters worse is that the solid ice the Islanders once skated on has cracked and left everyone feeling uneasy. In the second half, they discuss a few Islanders players getting a chance at the World Hockey Championships and how they might impact next season, either on the roster or as trade fodder. They also look at how their shallow prospect pool is all but ignored and how not all beloved veteran bargain free agents are created equal. Remember: some articles aren't worth getting mad about.
*-note that this episode was recorded prior to Game 7 between the Rangers and Hurricanes.

Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Valtteri Filppula (with guest Steven Smith)

Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Valtteri Filppula (with guest Steven Smith)

They talk about the comical contract signed on a day of high tension among Islanders fans and how Filppula found instant chemistry with another newcomer, Leo Komarov, on a team that was more successful than any fan ever dreamed it would be. They also recap a couple of highlight reel goals that show that the center was more than just the bad underlying numbers he had two years prior. But then the biggest plot twist imaginable happened when Filppula left to return to his original team and the Islanders had to scramble to replace a guy who had arrived in a flash. Of course, no tribute to “Weird Frans” would be complete without a discussion of the beloved Islander he most closely resembled on the ice, and how they formed a friendship after they both left the team.

Michael Paul Smith ,

Is this a fan podcast?

Because the two hosts are far too knowledgeable and professional to be fans like you and me! However you might classify it, this show is superb. Dan and Mike have an easy chemistry, and a shared love for the minutiae of Islanders history and fandom. It is wonderfully helpful to hear their insights between games, and has been cathartic in the not-so-recent dark ages. They also have dry senses of humor (Leebowski anyone?), and probably get approached during tailgates by people who don’t know them, but feel like they do. That’s what happens when your show is this good!

Home away from Islander Home

As an ex pat of Long Island, now living in Nashville, each episode of the Light house is a “must listen” for Islander fans. Dan and Mike’s easy and informed banter provide welcomed doses of history, perspective and a long suffering respect for an organization that we have been cheering on since the early days in 1970 when the Nassau Coliseum opened its doors.
