Episode 113: The Power of Time Budgeting & Our Core Value Index (Part 2)

Episode 113: The Power of Time Budgeting & Our Core Value Index (Part 2)

It’s the beginning of the year and as you are considering what goals to set or reset, the Mattsons thought it would be the perfect time to discuss the skill of TIME BUDGETING. In Part 2 of this conversation, Jeff and Terra explore the impact of one’s Core Value Index on the way they view and steward time. If you are not familiar with the Core Values Index, the Mattsons use this time tested assessment in their twenty years of practice, helping parents, couples families and organizational teams grow in their understanding of self and others. The CVI is over 97% reliable and helps us understand what motivates and brings anxiety. Listen in as Jeff and Terra make some key connections between how we best manage our time as a Merchants, Builders, Innovators or Bankers and how one might lead or parent others who are different from them when it comes to their CVI.

With a team of 11, Living Wholehearted helps leaders in a variety of settings, from corporate offices to leadership retreats and individual counseling. Jeff and Terra have each invested more than two decades in leadership coaching and trauma-informed therapy – and have helped national organizations and churches navigate difficult leadership crises. They are parents to two teen daughters, speakers, authors, executive coaches, and business owners who get what it’s like to juggle many aspects of one’s lives.

With the help of Terra’s book, Courageous: Being Daughters Rooted in Grace, and their co-authored book, Shrinking the Integrity Gap: Between What Leaders Preach and Live (October 2020, David C Cook), the Living Wholehearted Podcast is reaching a growing number of leaders in the home, at work, and in the community. The Mattsons are also spokespeople for Christian Parenting, which reaches 1 million parents and produces the Dear Mattsons youtube series. One of the Mattsons primary goals is to share Biblical, clinical and relational wisdom to help leaders live and lead with integrity, addressing the real struggles that keep people up at night. Jeff and Terra believe that when a leader shrinks the integrity gap between what they preach and how they actually live, everyone in their wake benefits. And when they don’t, everyone in their wake pays. It’s just a matter of time.

Episode 112: The Power of Time Budgeting

It’s the beginning of the year and as you are considering what goals to set or reset, the Mattsons thought it would be the perfect time to discuss the skill of TIME BUDGETING. Like budgeting money, time is a resource we often believe we have little or none to give away. Leaders are at the top of the list, running ragged and sacrificing what they say they love the most at the end of each day. So in this episode, Jeff and Terra talk about the art of stewarding our calendars, giving practical tips to shrink the integrity gap when it comes to budgeting time. From day-to-day disciplines to planning out annual Big Rocks, the Mattsons believe that every wholehearted leader understands the value and stewardship of time.

Episode 110: Singing in the Dark: A Story of Trust When We Cannot See with Ginny Owens

Episode 110: Singing in the Dark: A Story of Trust When We Cannot See with Ginny Owens

In this episode, the Mattsons talk with singer/songwriter, author, teacher, and advocate, Ginny Owens!
If you don’t know, Ginny Owens has spent the past two decades sharing her heart with listeners and readers. As a toddler, Ginny picked out melodies on the piano before she was able to put words together in a sentence. Even as vision left her eyes — due to a degenerative eye condition that left Ginny completely blind by age three — songs began to emerge from her fingertips.

In 2000, she was named the Gospel Music Association’s New Artist of the Year. Ginny has composed for such artists as Michael Card, Michael W. Smith, JJ Heller, and Rachael Lampa. In May, 2021, Ginny released her first EP of modern hymns and praise songs, Sing Hope in the Darkness and then created a solo-authored book, Singing in the Dark: Finding Hope in the Songs of Scripture (David C. Cook, 2021). She also released FAITHFUL: Go and Speak, book and album collaboration with Amy Grant, Ann Voskamp, Trillia Newbell, Ellie Holcomb, and Christy Nockels, just to name a few. Ginny contributed a chapter to the book, and co-wrote multiple songs on the album.

Her unique musical style and inspirational lyrics have transcended genre definition and taken her to diverse venues that include the White House, the Sundance Film Festival, Lilith Fair and the National Day of Prayer in Washington, D.C. Ginny has also been an adjunct professor at her alma mater, Belmont University, served as a worship leader, partnered with non-profits, and authored two books.

You can find her most recent releases anywhere you buy books or listen to music:
Singing in the Dark: Finding Hope in the Songs of Scripture, book and EP
FAITHFUL: Go and Speak, book and album collaboration

Episode 109: How Legacies Start: A Mexican-American Story with MŌRIAH

Episode 109: How Legacies Start: A Mexican-American Story with MŌRIAH

So often we get lost in our own narratives and forget those who have gone before us. The Mattsons were honored to hear MŌRIAH share the legacy of her grandparents and their sacrificial journey to help her become the woman she is today. From earning a college degree to becoming a recording artist, leadership takes many different forms - some more glamorous than others, but all deserving recognition.

Listen to today’s episode as the talented, well-known Christian artist and American Idol Alumni, MŌRIAH, shares why she is passionate about women, diversity, and bringing hope to those who are experiencing pain.  MŌRIAH Smallbone is a Mexican-American recording artist, actress and producer from Los Angeles, CA. After signing with SONY/Provident in Nashville, TN, her sophomore album, BRAVE, hit number 9 on Billboard’s CCM charts, which included a collaboration with Grammy Award-winning rapper Andy Mineo. Her film credits include the starring role in Because of Gracia (2017) and a role depicting the legendary singer Loyce Whiteman in an upcoming Ronald Reagan biopic alongside Dennis Quaid (Reagan, 2022). In 2021, MŌRIAH produced K-LOVE/AccessMore’s most successful podcast, BECOMING:us, alongside her Grammy-winning husband, Joel Smallbone, of FOR KING & COUNTRY. She will release her first live EP, Live from the Quarry, on December 3, 2021, which features a guest appearance by her husband.

The new album centers on contentment. Like many, MŌRIAH experienced an array of emotions in 2020—feeling angry, hurt, scared, insecure and remorseful. Yet all of those phases were necessary steps on her journey to a greater sense of calmness and gratitude. It was when she learned to settle into the present moment, and make peace in the tension, that she began to teem with authentic creativity, love, kindness and goodness. In time, she was able to work from a place of abundance rather than scarcity. MŌRIAH shares, “Nothing can fix a broken heart more than knowing that it’s loved, that it’s seen, and that its pain is felt. Now that I feel this more deeply than ever before, I can create from a place of rest. This entire EP is a celebration of being known, seen and loved.”
