Historian Lydia Moland’s new book resurrects Lydia Maria Child. Now mostly forgotten, Child was one of the 19th century’s most popular authors; she wrote best-selling novels and guidebooks for housewives, and edited the first American children’s magazine. And then she jeopardized her entire career by becoming an outspoken and influential crusader against slavery.
