Make the Connection – to End Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is modern day slavery involving the use of force, coercion, or fraud to obtain some type of labor or sex act. It affects every corner of the world and Texas, and Denton County are no exception. Interstate 35 being an un-tolled highway and a major cross-country, north-south route is one of the main trafficking routes in the country. There are over 300,000 victims of human trafficking in Texas, including almost 79,000 youth victims of sex trafficking and nearly 234,000 adult victims of labor trafficking, according to a 2016 study by the University of Texas at Austin. In this podcast, we'll explore what's being done throughout Denton County and the nation to help these victims and highlight various initiatives to combat human trafficking.

    On this episode of Make the Connection – to End Human Trafficking, we talk to Abby Germer of Refuge for Women, a long-term residential healing program that serves survivors of trafficking for up to two years. Abby shares her own journey of involvement in anti-trafficking work and the mission and work of the organization. From providing survivors with trade skills and therapeutic benefits to navigating healthcare and finding adequate placement, the organization confronts a host of challenges in caring for residents who have suffered immense trauma.     Awareness: The Pandemic of Human Trafficking With Sarolyn Morgan

    On this episode of Make the Connection - To End Human Trafficking, we welcome Sarolyn Morgan who is the Victim Assistance Specialist with the Department of Homeland Security. Sarolyn shares her knowledge and experience and discusses the various locations where human trafficking can occur, such as in hotels, motels, nail and hair salons, agriculture, city streets, schools, churches, and foster placements. Sarolyn also emphasizes the severity and trauma experienced by victims and provides numerous indicators to recognize possible victims of trafficking. She also stresses the importance of educating children, parents, and educators about cybersecurity and the risks of human trafficking. Sarolyn also discusses ways that everyone can help to combat human trafficking, including volunteering, donating, and using resources to call if you suspect anything is suspicious.
