Mastering life's challenges with the wisdom of Yoga philosophy with Nataraj Chaitanya
Today Nova sits down with Nataraj, one of our amazing teachers at our Mornington Studio. Nataraj also teaches philosophy at our teacher training, and in this episode he shares his history with yoga and his wisdom in mastering life’s challenges with its philosophy.
Nataraj came to yoga at the age of 12 after being gifted a book on mantras, and after a series of wonderful and surprising experiences, he soon took part in teacher training at the age of 15. He now devotes his life to the practice, study and embodiment of yoga.
In our conversation, Nataraj describes his spiritual practice of blending ancient wisdom with modern living, and what it’s like to live right at the tension point of the two. He shares his thoughts on the incredible mystery of what and who we are, and how seeking wisdom is vital to unfolding our human potential.
According to yoga philosophy, one of the greatest mistakes we can make is to believe that we are just our bodies, thoughts or events that have happened to us. Nataraj explains the tradition that says we are something far more eternal and powerful than we can imagine. By embodying the yogic practice, we can start to discover our own limitlessness.
As a yoga studio, we often hear people’s skepticism about coming to yoga when they see that it’s linked to religion or deep spiritual practices - ‘God’ is a loaded word. However, Nataraj talks about yogic tradition presenting a very broad idea about what divinity could be and how it isn’t expressed in only one form. He believes that doing away with habitual ways of thinking to move towards the divine will nourish us and cause us to recognise our own fullness.
Life is wild and unpredictable. It’s sometimes painful and filled with uncertainty. Yoga philosophy encourages us to expand our framework so that we can hold the vision of the big picture. We treat ourselves with grace and compassion, knowing that every challenge that arises is an opportunity for growth, love and to connect with what you know to be your highest value.
