What Do You Know About The Power of Evil?

The evil that afflicts our lives often leaves us confused and directionless, wounded and powerless. How should we respond to evil's power to assault us? How can we understand God's work in a world that seems all too often to be permeated with evil? Narrating her own wrestling with evil as well as engaging in biblical and philosophical analysis, biblical scholar Ingrid Faro explores the many dimensions to evil. Soberly honest, biblically engaged, and theologically nuanced, Demystifying Evil examines the power of evil to disrupt and fragment our lives and tempt us to collude with it. But evil does not have the last word. Faro takes us on a journey into the book of Genesis, the Ancient Near East culture, the cross, and her own story of suffering to engage the undoing of evil. Dr. Ingrid Faro (PhD, MDiv) is Professor of Old Testament and Coordinator of the MA in Old Testament–Jerusalem University College Program at Northern Seminary in Lisle, Illinois. She previously served as Dean of Academic Affairs at Northern, Dean of Theology at the Scandinavian School of Theology, and Director of Masters Programs at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where she also taught Hebrew and Old Testament. She is an international speaker and the author of Evil in Genesis, Demystifying Evil, Honest Answers (co-author), and the forthcoming Redeeming Eden: How Women in the Bible Advance the Story of Salvation, as well as numberous articles, chapters, and reviews. Ingrid lives just outside Chicago, Illinois, and has two married children and four delightful young grandchildren.

I help individuals and groups make their advertising more effective. People and organizations get the most from working with me, when they are familiar and comfortable with direct marketing methods. I’ve helped copywriters and businesses in more than 100 industries increase profits. My book Breakthrough Copywriting is a #1 Bestseller on Amazon. Way back in 2004, I created and published the first widely used set of Copywriting Templates. Since 1993, sales letters I’ve written have brought in as much as $40 million to one business. These days, I don’t write that often for clients, though. My main client work is coaching professional copywriters, business owners, and in-house copywriters for organizations. Many of my professional copywriter clients have reached the top of their respective fields. Businesses I’ve worked with have added millions of dollars to their bottom lines. Clients like my style because I personalize coaching for each person I work with, based on how they learn most easily and quickly. One of my most successful clients, Chris Haddad, says: “I don’t know how he does it, but David Garfinkel’s got an almost magical knack for boiling down tough and brainy marketing and business concepts into easy chunks that anyone can understand… and take immediate action on.” Disclosure: I don’t always know how I do it, either. But I hear different versions of Chris’s kind words from others, all the time. On the large-organization side of my business, I’ve consulted to publishers like Time-Life Books and Agora Financial. With Agora, I’ve participated in more than 100 large- and small-group copy-critique calls and webinars—and led some of those myself. Business publications that have featured me include The Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur Magazine, Sales and Marketing Management, International Business Magazine, and Fast Company. Before I started my copywriting career, I was San Francisco Bureau Chief for McGraw-Hill’s World News Service.

A History of Black Christianity in the United States

A Groundbreaking Portrait of African American Christianity The history of African American Christianity is one of the determined faith of a people driven to pursue spiritual and social uplift for themselves and others to God's glory. Yet stories of faithful Black Christians have often been forgotten or minimized. The dynamic witness of the Black church in the United States is an essential part of Christian history that must be heard and dependably retold. In this groundbreaking two-volume work, Walter R. Strickland II does just that through a theological-intellectual history highlighting the ways theology has formed and motivated Black Christianity across the centuries. Through his original research he has identified five theological anchors grounding African Americans in Christian orthodoxy: Big God Jesus Conversion and walking in the Spirit The Good Book Deliverance In volume 1, a narrative history, Strickland tells the story of these themes from the 1600s to the present. He explores the crucial ecclesiastical, social, and theological developments, including the rise of Black evangelicalism as well as broader contributions to politics and culture. Swing Low offers a defining rubric under which to observe, understand, and learn from the diverse and living entity that is African American Christianity. Volume 2, a companion anthology, covers the breadth of these historical developments by presenting primary-source documents so we can listen to Black Christianity in its own words. Walter R. Strickland II (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is associate professor of systematic and contextual theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has coauthored or contributed to several books, including For God So Loved the World: A Blueprint for Kingdom Diversity. He is a host of the White Horse Inn podcast and founder of Cultural Engagement and Aptree Learning.

How Can Giving Hilariously Transform Your Heart?

Christian schools only have two major sources of revenues: tuition and philanthropy. The Christian School and Philanthropy delves deeply into how school leaders can raise transformational philanthropic dollars. At times story telling, at times grittily detailed, at times reflective, we challenge secular assumptions about donor motivation, the nature of the donor, and typical fund-raising scenarios. In its place, we provide a deeply Biblical narrative pulling from the examples of Jesus’ own fund-raising committee, the travels of Paul, and the extraordinary fund-raising achievements of the Hebrew Scriptures. Backed by the latest research from multiple sources, and proven in the experience of our Christian schools, we offer you practical pathways irrespective of the size of your school. Professionals and volunteers alike will find helpful strategies and tactics to take your school to the next level. During grade school, he sold his Matchbox car collection to buy a MIDI keyboard. Soon after he was performing with an all-adult orchestra for the show, Godspell. By high school, his bedroom was full of keyboards, keytars, and drums. In college, he bought a 4-track recorder and began recording and mixing local bands, leading to the creation of Edge Studio! After college, he engineered at a major studio, worked on multiple albums with Deep Purple, learned to twirl drumsticks from Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel’s drummer – see photo), recorded José Feliciano, Joe Lynn Turner, and Gary Moore.  Simultaneously his own Edge Studio was expanding to national acts. So David went solo, co-writing and playing with John Mayer (keys, drums, recording, and mixing), mixing for Mel Tormé, and releasing over 150 albums! In 2007, David transitioned Edge Studio to a drug-free studio environment, which turned away many big bands. So he adapted to voice over. And Edge Studio V2 was born! On a personal note, I consider myself a very lucky husband and a proud dad to two incredible sons. I’m also the happy owner of two snorty English Bulldogs who love to drool around the house! And every day at 4:30am, I’m a (sometimes limping) triathlete.

Defiant Faith in the Face of Suffering

The unique richness of the book of Job cannot be simply explained—it must be experienced. While Job presents challenges for scholars, ministry leaders, and laypeople, it also contains powerful lessons on faith and perseverance in the face of suffering that we all need to hear. In Wrestling with Job, Bill Kynes, a lifelong pastor, and his son Will Kynes, a Job scholar, guide readers on a journey through this complex text. Each chapter combines exposition, spiritual application, and a deeper look at some of the thornier aspects of the text. Complete with reflection questions for groups or individuals, this book equips anyone wondering how the lessons of Job apply to their own lives to consider how they too might practice defiant faith. Bill Kynes (PhD, Cambridge) has been the senior pastor at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Annandale, Virginia, since 1986. He is a senior teaching fellow with the C. S. Lewis Institute and a member of the TGC Council and has been a Veritas Forum speaker. His books include A Christology of Solidarity: Jesus as the Representative of His People in Matthew and Seven Pressing Questions: Addressing Critical Issues Confronting Christian Faith. Will Kynes (PhD, Cambridge) is associate professor of biblical studies at Samford University. He has written extensively on the book of Job and wisdom and suffering in the Hebrew Bible. His books include My Psalm Has Turned into Weeping: Job's Dialogue with the Psalms; An Obituary for "Wisdom Literature": The Birth, Death, and Intertextual Reintegration of a Biblical Corpus; and The Oxford Handbook of Wisdom and the Bible.
