Why Are We Ignoring Teacher Trauma? ft. Sofia Gonzalez | Ep. 036

In Episode 36 of Mindset on Resilience, we’re joined by Sofia Gonzalez, an educator and U.S. Department of Education School Ambassador from the Chicagoland area. Sofia began her teaching career in 2009 at a second-chance charter school in inner-city Chicago, where education meant much more than academics—it was, for some students, the difference between life and death. Her experiences in this challenging environment revealed the incredible resilience and resourcefulness of her students. Sofia introduced peace circles in her classroom, giving students a safe space to see, listen to, and understand each other, fostering a sense of community. However, after losing several students to gun violence and witnessing the school-to-prison pipeline firsthand, Sofia began experiencing compassion fatigue. This ignited her passion for advocating for the psychological safety of K-12 educators working in high-stakes environments. As a U.S. Department of Education School Ambassador, Sofia is dedicated to addressing the invisible tax on teachers of color, creating equity in education, and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. Tune in to hear how Sofia is changing the narrative for both students and educators, highlighting the importance of trauma-informed teaching and educator well-being.
