    A Better Way to do Relationships

    Verses Used: Proverbs 15:1Proverbs 11:13Joshua 21:43-45Luke 15:12-32Matthew 18:21-22Ephesians 4:321 Corinthians 13:4-7,13 Takeaways: Direct Communication Communication is essential to having a healthy relationship. Without clear communication we are left to assume and rarely assume correctly.Communication is absolutely necessary, but equally important in communication is the way we say it.How you say something is equally important to what you say. Trust Trust means that we can rely on someone because we feel safe and have confidence that they will not hurt or betray us.Trust is another way of saying we have faith. We trust God, or have faith in God because he is trustworthy. He is faithful.If we want to have better relationships with other people, we have to learn how to build trust. Forgiveness We forgive because we have been forgiven. It’s as simple as that.Josh points out that forgiveness is not the same as trust. Trust is earned in drops and lost in buckets. Love There are different types of love outlined in the bible:Eros- Romantic Love Storge- Familial Love Philia- Friendship Love Agape- Sacrificial Love Discussion Questions:     Why does communication so quickly break down in relationships?Why do you think so many people are not trustworthy? Who is one person in your life you can trust?In the story of the Prodigal son, why does the father not punish his son when he comes home?     Sent: Gospel > Groundhog Day

    Verses Used: Acts 28:13-30Ecclesiastes 3:11Luke 10:162 Timothy 4:7-8 Takeaways: God has a Plan God’s plan was to rescue lost people in Rome, and God’s plan is to rescue lost people, using you.The plan God has for all of his followers is to be a representation of the kingdom through our words and actions. Engaging with Not Yet Believers Paul used the opportunity that God presented him to testify of the kingdom.You can build relationships with not-yet-believers without compromising your convictions, but you can’t live on mission from a distance. Finishing Well The book of Acts concludes with Chapter 28 but the story continues with us today.The gospel is better news than we even know.In a world full of people trying to find the answers to life, we have them. They are found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The good news of the gospel. Discussion Questions:     How is your day-to-day life different when you understand God’s bigger purpose?Why do you think Christians sometimes choose isolation over pursuing relationships with not-yet-believers?How did you feel/respond when I read that quote from The Cure?How does our grasp of the gospel impact how we live each day?     Sent: Storms, Shipwrecks, and Snakebites

    Verses Used: Acts 27:13-26Mark 4:35-41Romans 8:28 Takeaways: Storms Josh talked about how Paul knew there was a greater purpose beyond this storm he was presently in.Paul had faith that God would save them.In the midst of a storm where all hope is lost, God calms his people. He is with us through the storms Shipwrecks Jesus is the business of rescuing and redeeming people, relationships and futures.Paul and the whole crew were spared because God had a bigger story for them.The same is true for you. God has bigger purposes than your current crisis. Snakebites Satan would love nothing more than for us to get distracted and discouraged so we get off-mission.Jesus invites us into a better story, a bigger story.To live in the midst of your story today takes faith, patience, and perseveranceGod is able to rescue and redeem your situation Discussion Questions:     What are some storms in life that we face? How do we feel while in them?Why do you think God allowed the ship in our story to sink?     Verses Used: Acts 17:16-34Romans 1:251 Corinthians 1:28-29Matthew 6:31-34 Takeaways: We need to remember this life is not about me; it starts and ends with God. Mission Ready Paul was always ready to be used by God. He wasn’t perfect, but he was available.We are all invited to live as missionaries. It’s part of our new identity in Christ.Wherever you are, you are invited to be mission ready. Going for the Heart (Idols) Tim Keller defines an idol in several different ways:Anything more important to you than GodAnything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than GodAnything you seek to give you what only God can give youIdolatry can manifest in many different ways including:Greed/materialism, lust for achievement/success, codependent relationship with a child or spouse, porn/sexual addiction, or addition to drugs, alcohol, food or entertainment Source Idols look like:Comfort, Approval, Control, or Power Outcomes (Skeptics) Paul spoke about the resurrection of the dead and some people mocked him. Some did believe and joined him.We get to invite people to trust in Jesus, but not everyone will receive the message of the gospel.We get to be faithful and available and leave the results up to Jesus. He is the true savior. Discussion Questions:     What are some of the common idols you see people worship in our world today?Why do you think addressing people’s idols can be tricky?Why do you think so many people are skeptical of the church or the gospel in our culture?How might we act if we think the outcomes belong to us? https://missio.life/home

    Sent: Playing with Fire

    Verses Used: Acts 12:1-23Romans 13:1John 19:11James 4:6Matthew 23:12 Takeaways: Herod’s Power Herod had power, he had the ability to kill people and get away with it.   Sometimes bad people are in power. They get away with doing bad things to good people.God is the giver of power and authority.Just because we follow Jesus and are about his mission, does not mean that we won’t have opposition. God’s Power (through prayer) We saw the power that Herod had to kill James and imprison Peter, now we will see the power of God to interveneHerod showed his power to have James executed and Peter imprisoned, but God showed his power to free Peter from prison.God invites us to pray, to converse, to talk with him as a son would with his father, or as you would with your closest friend.God includes us in prayer because it’s a relational connection that lets us know him deeper, and we get to see what he is doing. Pride and Humility From James we read, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”From Matthew we read, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Discussion Questions:     What keeps you from placing a higher value on prayer, or spending more time with God in prayer?How might your daily life be different if you made prayer a bigger priority?Can you think of some ways pride causes problems in our lives?Why is it harder to live with humility than pride? https://missio.life/home

    Looking Back, Looking Forward

    Verses Used: Psalm 105Matthew 28:18-20Romans 8:28-292 Corinthians 11:22-28 Takeaways: Looking Back When we remember what God has done for us, our faith is built up. We are encouraged and we see evidence of God fulfilling His promises.We need to keep in mind as we celebrate wins, that God is the hero of the story. Looking Forward Our goal, our aim, our mission is to go and make disciples.We intend to move people from unbelief to belief in every area of life in light of the gospel.Missio was built on smaller discipleship groups and we believe the best discipleship happens in circles, not in rows. We want to see more life-on-life discipleship whether that be Missional Communities, DNA groups, or Gateway Teams.At Missio, we place a high value on building trust with people through relationships It Takes Perseverance and Courage To a be part of a church plant, it takes perseverance and courage. Not everything is going the way we would like it to right now.We don’t want to leave anyone behind in their struggles. We are called to bear one another’s burdens. The challenge now arises when we are in a trial or struggle of some kind, we still have a mission to make disciples.God has invited us to join him on his mission to reach the world. https://missio.life/home
