    Netflix Suckers – November 19, 2024

Prosecutors are debating over who should hold Oxford school officials accountable for the tragedy that happened at the high school. Free Press ace Tresa Baldas (and ML’s wife) joins Marc, Shawn and ML to discuss the latest developments, and how Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel are handling it. STRAIGHT DOPE: ML considers starting the show with a discussion of his latest column, an expose on how the “naughty thoughts” of a Highland Park school board member caused the debt-laden district to pay out $1.8 million to its former chief executive, but realizes he better let his wife do the talking. Again. To read the column, click this link. Shawn again objectifies ML, commenting on his appearance and penchant for skinny ties. Salzburg is known as one of the most fun towns in Austria, which is why it’s especially puzzling that Shawn knows it for the salt times. Tresa discusses the latest in the Oxford High School tragedy and a dispute over the role the Michigan attorney general may play in the case. Read one of her latest exclusives here. Marc seizes the opportunity to do one of his favorite things: Dive deep into the legal implications of a case. Do different officials have different subpoena powers? Tresa explains. Shawn questions how responsible school officials, who oversee hundreds of students, should be held when one of the students acts out. A lively discussion ensues, involving how police and teachers don’t get the credit – and support – they deserve. Tresa sets the record straight on something Oakland County officials said after the shooting that just wasn’t true. Listen and learn. Shawn, who shares the sunny outlook of the former front man of The Smiths, disses Morrissey anyway. Please support the show by becoming a Soulmate. Up in Smoke – November 12, 2024

Eli Zaret visits to drop some wisdom on minor topics like the future of America and an even bigger deal: The future of the Detroit Lions. Then Shawn drops in to share more tales of his misspent youth. STRAIGHT DOPE: Eli Zaret is feeling salty after last week’s elections, offering hot takes on how the Democrats got owned. Men playing women’s sports, government-funded gender reassignment surgery and losing touch with working folks are just a few of the things he believes swung the election. Marc begs to differ on some of those issues, while ML says there are some topics Democrats never seem to get to work for them. Eli, ML and Marc think the Democrats will be wandering the wilderness until they find a candidate who can reclaim the middle and shed the perception they’re catering to the elites. Eli and ML believe there is one politician who may be the Dems’ next Great White Hope. Listen and learn who they’re talking about. Shawn makes the scene and chimes in that Democrats are suffering because of things like universities offering students Lego rooms and other coping mechanisms for kids traumatized by … life. ML shares that he heard some professors at MSU cancelled classes the day after the election for students struggling with the election results. The show goes under its own transformation … from politics to sports, as Eli sounds off on the Lions’ latest amazing victory. (He and ML both missed it because they were already in bed — but not in bed together!) Shawn provides his latest account of Lions fans changing the way airlines operate and taking over flights. Even ML has noticed Lions’ fever, which manifested itself at a local establishment after his latest hockey game (a thrilling 2-1 Bulldogs victory!). Eli recounts William Clay Ford’s takeover and mismanagement of the Lions – and the role WCF’s daughter played in their ascension. ML asks how much credit former Lions linebacker Chris Spielman deserves for the team’s success. Eli, Marc and Shawn sound off. Eli says every team needs a genius – the owner, the general manager or the coach. Who is the Lions’ genius? ML says on the show that he wrote in his show notes “Never-ending baseball talk.” This is that line. The Tigers talk is fine, but when Eli, Marc and Shawn keep rhapsodizing about the 1986 New York Mets, well, you know… Marc lauds Shawn for nailing the score of the Lions-Texans game. Later, ML tries to give Shawn credit for his prognostication skills, then instantly regrets it. Please support the show by becoming a Soulmate. ROOM 7609: Without any suggestions from listeners, ML dials up a tribute to Marc’s children with Julian Cope’s “Charlotte Anne.” No one is impressed. Enemy of the People – November 5, 2024

An Only Fans creator running for office, a bold prediction, election deniers and ML reflects on the reaction to the night he got stomped as ML, Marc and Shawn try to avoid talking politics on the most political day of the year! STRAIGHT DOPE: We’re trying to avoid politics on election day, but ML nevertheless makes a bold prediction. Then he takes credit for a prediction he made before the Donald Trump-Kamala Harris debate that was mostly right. Well, THIS is embarrassing! On the same day last week’s show posted, in which ML says newspapers should get out of the endorsement game, the Free Press’ owners announced they were getting out of the announcement game! ML explains that he had NO IDEA that news was coming down on the same day he made his comments. If you’re wondering why you’ve never heard a political ad on this show, it’s because our policy is not to take any ads – no matter how lucrative – from politicians. Local television stations, on the other hand, are RAKING IT IN!!! Are you sick of all the texts and political propaganda? Marc isn’t. He explains why. Shawn is back from Iron Mountain, where he stayed to cover the Detroit Lions-Green Bay Packers tilt. The reason? Cost. Listen and let us know what you think of the AMAZING deal he got on a flight. Marc was too busy to go to Iron Mountain, which is handy, because he was BANNED from that corner of the U.P. back in high school. He explains. Marc asks ML and Shawn to talk about their worst assignments from the road. ML shares a story that almost cost him his life. Shawn talks about hanging out on a boat in Greece with a bunch of 80-year-old dudes. The way sports reporters file stories has changed dramatically, due to technological changes. ML and Shawn recount some of the challenges they had to overcome, including phone couplers and dictating stories long-distance while using an MCI calling card. Dave Portnoy rears his ugly head, spurring a debate between ML and Marc over whether he’s evil or an evil genius — or both. A candidate for the Michigan House made a bundle on Only Fans back in 2022. A discussion over whether being a sex worker should disqualify a candidate morphs into a discussion over the difference between loving porn and the other 99 percent of it. S—Show – October 29, 2024

Erika Erickson is replaced by ML and a shit show ensues. STRAIGHT DOPE: We start today’s report with some very good news: Erika Erickson is returning to our local airwaves when she becomes the nightside reporter at WDIV-TV, in a clear attempt by Local 4 to make amends for depriving the viewing public of ML 17 years ago. ML goes behind enemy lines to party at Duggan Fife and Matt Riley’s epic tailgates. It was a great start to a day that didn’t end the way he hoped – and expected. The crew debates the Washington Post’s decision NOT to endorse a candidate in the presidential election. Marc thinks it’s a good call, but you may be surprised by long-time newspapermen ML and Shawn’s take on this controversial topic. Marc asks who serves on the editorial boards who make the decision on who to endorse. ML and Shawn offer insights. Ronald Reagan was Teflon Ron. Donald Trump has become Teflon Don, though Shawn thinks he should be Asbestos Don. Anyway, Shawn and Marc marvel how comments made by a standup comic and podcaster during the Madison Square Gardens Trump rally may actually cost Trump support. ML says: “Who is this comedian of which you speak? ”Marc and ML recount The Big Game, and ML pulls out a gift he got for Marc in Ann Arbor inspired by Marc’s favorite former Naval intelligence officer and prolific cheater … even though Marc doesn’t consider it cheating. And doesn’t seem to appreciate this gracious offering from a good friend. Shawn tries to talk about the Spartan-Wolverine game, and the fracas that erupted on the field in the final seconds, but ML and Marc tell him to save it for later. Please support the show by becoming a Soulmate. Marc isn’t having it. ROOM 7609: Shawn leaves to take a leak while listener Dave lauds Shawn’s contributions to last week’s show by suggesting “Feel Good Hit of the Summer” by Queens of the Stone Age. ML is forced to repeat Dave’s tribute after Shawn returns from shaking the snake…which he refers to as “the earthworm.” After Send us your favorite deep cut or obscure band – and a story about them or why they mean something to you – by writing tomlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com. An Episode About Nothing – October 22, 2024

ML is off doing good in the world, Erika steps up, Marc prepares a show, and Shawn happily derails everything into nothing. STRAIGHT DOPE: Elrick is off the show again as he’s speaking to the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association to promote his “Eye on Michigan” student journalism endeavour. Shawn found ML’s wikipedia page and we question who did the editing.  For some reason there isn’t a page for the “mildly interesting” Shawn Windsor. Shawn starts quizzing Erica about her acting past and she tells us about Mrs. McNutt. Erica expresses her love of true crime and then reveals that she helped open and close two cold cases. Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams has been suspended by the NFL for two games.  Shawn is more interested in his eating habits. No one on the show can understand why there’s such a push to get the Menendez Brothers and Scott Peterson out of jail. Some evil people want to move Halloween to the weekend because kids are soft.  Other people want to change the name to the Harvest Festival. Shawn was alive in the 1980s. Michigan and Michigan State face off this Saturday night and no one seems to care that much. If you missed ML’s column on Sunday- you should go read it. It’s about a judge running in Wayne County who doesn’t seem interested in talking about his own legal record. GEEK OF THE WEEK: Marc introduces the Soulmates to a Shock Doc in Virginia. Additionally, Marc reminds the audience about the wasteful and lazy Panda bears. They are also an arm of Chinese propaganda. ROOM 7609: This time it’s a band that ML might only half-hate. Fantastic Voyage – October 15, 2024

Shawn is back from the road, where he saw something awful in Dallas that Marc watched at home and ML is glad he missed. STRAIGHT DOPE: ML raves about last week’s guest Andy Dirks, whose excellence on the Tigers radio broadcast was on full display Saturday during what turned out to be the hometown nine’s last game of their remarkable season … a season you could call a “Fantastic Voyage.” (More on that later…) This week’s show is loaded with great sound and video – a special bonus for our Soulmates who donate at least $5 a month via Patreon. We start out with Alex’s tribute to the wayward Shawn Windsor. To become a Soulmate, hit this link: patreon.com/MLSoulofDetroit Shawn has some choice words for Carlos, his sidepiece on the “Carlos & Shawn” podcast. Marc and ML wonder it it’s time for an intervention… Shawn was in Dallas when Aidan Hutchinson went down, making him an eyewitness to a potentially historic event that could derail the Detroit Lions’ bid for a Super Bowl appearance. Only Marc and Shawn aren’t ready to give up just yet. ML, who — suprise! — watched the Lions Sunday night, gave up decades ago. Detroit Tigers superfan Teebs was one of the many dynamic characters ML met outside Comerica Park last week while working as the Detroit Free Press’ “man on the street.” Watch the podcast to see Teebs doing his thing outside the ballpark. ML isn’t pleased when he’s interrupted while shooting a selfie video from Comerica Park. Watch the show and see for yourself the look on his face.  Shawn was on the road, which means one thing: Good eats. He and Marc share their views on Tex-Mex food, while ML questions why Shawn would think a guy named “Monarrez” who grew up in southern California might not be familiar with this particular type of cuisine. The national media was aghast that Donald Trump would insult Detroit – in Detroit! ML and Marc think Trump’s comments will actually help him win votes in Michigan, while Shawn isn’t so sure. Marc asks when the last time someone who didn’t have an Ivy League degree or elite pedigree ran this country. It’s a great question, which the crew wrestles to answer. A Dorito got Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in trouble with Catholics. Marc and ML, who are regular churchgoers, weigh in on the debate. Shawn hates the French and the Dutch. Listen and learn why. ML wonders how he feels about the Walloon… Please support the show by becoming a Soulmate. Andy Dirks & Jerks – October 8, 2024

Erika Erickson is back and we’re talking with Tigers broadcaster Andy Dirks… while Shawn is cleaning his dirty drawers in Cleveland. STRAIGHT DOPE: Fresh off his appearance on the Rachel Maddow Show, ML starts the podcast with a tribute to his favorite host of the Carlos & Shawn podcast … Mr. Monarrez. Former Tiger Andy Dirks, who provides color commentary, zooms in to talk about the Detroit Tigers amazing season. Andy breaks down the managerial genius of AJ Hinch, whose ability to put players in a position to succeed prompts ML to reveal the similarities between the Tigers skipper and his leadership of the Detroit Free Press recreational co-ed Wednesday night Belle Isle softball team. Andy politely pretends to take a call in the middle of ML’s incisive analysis. Erika says it seems like the young Tigers are having a lot of fun and defying expectations. Andy offers his insights. Andy contrasts the 2011-2014 Tigers he played on with the current squad. He said his Tigers were starter-heavy, with horses like Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer in the starting rotation. The current Tigers have only one horse: Tarik Skubal. How do you hit a 100-mph fastball? Andy discusses batting strategy and how pinch hitters prepare to face flamethrowers. ML – again – sees parallels between how he helps the members of his softball team prepare to face pitchers … hurling 10-mph pitches. Marc asks ML about the column that got him on Rachel Maddow, an investigation into where U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers really lives. Shawn dials in to discuss why he skipped dinner with Jennifer Hammond to wash his drawers in a Cleveland laundromat. Teen trolls stop Shawn on the street in Houston. ML says he’s pretty sure his cousin Jeffrey was not involved, but he can’t guarantee it. Please support the show and join the Soul Patrol by becoming a Soulmate. Watchdogs Let Loose on Lansing – October 1, 2024

Michigan lawmakers took $6.3 million in freebies – and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. That’s what ML’s student investigative reporting program Eye On Michigan found when they spent a year examining free meals and trips lobbyists reported giving to state officials.   STRAIGHT DOPE: Prepare to be disappointed: Erika is off this week and ML is back in the big chair. After recapping his trip to Boston, he goes off the rail with a rant about StubHub and how they almost screwed him out of tickets he bought a month ago for the Michigan State Spartans versus Boston College Eagles in Chestnut Hill. Fed up with StubHub, ML tries Ticket Club to score a big rebate from Rakuten, only to get stung by a bait-and-switch. Marc is not surprised. Marc marvels at how ML continues to avoid hopping on the Detroit Lions bandwagon. Listen and find out what ML was doing while the rest of Detroit was watching the Leos feast on the birds from the coffee capital of the world. Marc is alternately fascinated and confounded by ML’s allegiances, leading to a discussion of how ML Doc Martens played a factor in his decision to adopt West Ham United as his favorite Premier League team. Shawn is AWOL after flying to Houston Monday night to watch the Detroit Tigers take on the Houston Astros in the first round of the American League Wild Card series. Marc asks ML if he likes the new playoff format, which is a major change from the one-game play-off of yore. Before Shawn can even think it, ML makes the Major League Baseball format all about him … and his beer league Bulldog hockey team. Michigan lawmakers took at least 17,000 free lunches and trips from lobbyists over the last 20 years or so. That’s what ML’s student watchdog reporting program Eye On Michigan found during a year-long investigation. Click here see what happens when the kids ask lawmakers to explain themselves. Eye On Michigan and the Free Press created a searchable database you can use to find out what any lawmaker who served since 2001 took from a lobbyist. Try it here. If you want to support student investigative reporters and learn more about the program, click this link. Marc muses over earworms and how hard it is to shake them, prompting ML to recall a once hard-to-find Pink Floyd track that he goes crazy trying to name.
