Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report for Oct 14-20, 2024

The Alabama Freshwater Fishing report is your best resource for the Lake Guntersville Fishing Report, Weiss Lake Fishing Report, Lake Eufaula Fishing Report, Mobile Tensaw Delta Fishing Report, and all the creeks, rivers, and reservoirs in between. In this episode, Nick welcomes Steve Graziano ("Graz") from Lake Eufaula, who shares that the bass fishing has been outstanding due to rising water levels after recent storms. Graz mentions that, although the water got muddy, things have settled, and the shad and bass have moved back into predictable patterns. He describes recent trips where they caught nearly 75 bass in a day, including a mix of largemouth and spotted bass. He shares tips for fishing during these peak conditions, including using a spinning setup, casting techniques, and teaching clients how to hold rods correctly for more accurate casts. Graz emphasizes that the fish are moving in groups, staying shallow as the baitfish have stayed in clearer, shallower waters. He also highlights the importance of experimenting with bait, including a new favorite, the "Jelly Bean" finesse worm from Zoom, which has been producing great results. Next, Peter Jordan from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta joins the show. He talks about the excellent conditions for both fly and conventional fishing, with creeks like Tensaw, Escatawpa, and Perdido showing strong bites, particularly for Choctaw bass. Peter shares his go-to tactics, including using topwater flies in the morning and switching to streamers later in the day. For conventional tackle, he’s had success with redfish magics and paddle tail grubs. Peter also updates listeners on the delta’s fishing action, mentioning that redfish, bass, and specs are all biting well, and he’s been enjoying some family fishing adventures too. Lastly, Jimmy Stiles, a PhD student at Auburn University specializing in human-snake conflict, joins to provide essential tips on venomous snake safety for anglers. Jimmy emphasizes the importance of learning how to identify Alabama’s six venomous snake species and offers practical advice to reduce dangerous encounters. He stresses the importance of watching where you place your hands and feet, particularly around boat ramps, banks, or when flipping over boats. He also discusses what to do if bitten—highlighting the importance of staying calm, removing constrictive clothing, and getting to a hospital for anti-venom treatment. Jimmy dispels common myths about snake bites and reinforces that prevention and awareness are key to staying safe while enjoying the outdoors. Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report for Oct 10, 2023

First up we have Peter John Cole reporting in from the Cahaba River. Peter reports that fishing is hot despite the low, clear water conditions on the Cahaba River, particularly in Bibb and Shelby counties. The topwater bite is still strong, with the Ribbit Rhol and double-barrel poppers being effective. He highlights the challenge of fishing in low water and emphasizes the importance of adjusting presentation to suit the conditions. Right now, Peter recommends fishing with smaller topwater flies, like the No. 4 Ribbit Rhol, to catch bigger Alabama bass in this clear water. Anglers can expect fish to be concentrated around shoals where oxygen levels are higher. Additionally, Peter shares some tips on reading the water and using slower, less aggressive approaches when necessary to entice fish. Next up we have Dip McMillan from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Dip discusses an upcoming squirrel hunt event on the Upper Delta WMA, focusing on getting kids involved in small-game hunting. Scheduled for December 7th at Hubbard’s Landing, the event will offer gun safety instruction, hunting with dogs, free food, and camaraderie. Dip also provides a brief fishing update for the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, noting that the crappie are moving into their fall pattern, with good bites reported in 6-10 feet of water on structure. He suggests targeting crappie using minnows and jigs, particularly as the fish are becoming more aggressive ahead of the colder months. It's all brought to you, whether it's good, bad, or ugly. With Hurricane Helene bearing down on the Gulf Coast and throwing off storms, we’re changing pace this week to revisit some old episodes we’ve recorded with our friends at the various Waterkeepers organizations. First up, we have Justinn Overton with Coosa Riverkeepers reporting on the Coosa RIver. Justinn monitors the waterways around Weiss Lake, Logan Martin Lake, Lake Jordan, Lay Lake, and Neely-Henry. She’s an avid outdoorswoman and environmentalist that has the information you need to know to keep you and your family safe while you’re out on the Coosa Lake Systems this weekend. Next up, we have Will Strickland, Executive Director of Mobile Baykeeper. Will is an avid fisherman, a competent wing shot, and a passionate defender of our state’s waterways. Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report for September 16-22, 2024

In this episode, host Nick Williams welcomes special guest Logan Parks, a seasoned angler from Auburn, Alabama. Logan is known for founding the Auburn High School bass fishing team and later winning the 2021 Bass Pro Shops Open with Tucker Smith, taking home a million-dollar prize. Logan shares insights on fishing near Auburn, emphasizing the diversity of local fisheries such as the Chattahoochee and Tallapoosa rivers, and Lake Martin, where he recently fished and caught numerous fish during the fall transition. Logan details the top techniques that worked on Lake Martin, highlighting a shallow topwater bite, targeting baitfish using sonar, and fishing around shoals. He recommends using baits like the Berkley Chapo and jigheads to maximize success. With fish moving shallower due to cooling water temperatures, Logan expects the bite to improve even more in the coming weeks. Logan also discusses the upcoming 2024 National Student Angler Networking Event (INSANE), hosted by the Logan Parks Fishing Foundation. This event connects high school and college anglers, offering them opportunities to showcase their skills and earn scholarships. Set for October 4-6 in Auburn, Alabama, the event features a draft where college anglers select high school partners, with cash prizes up to $25,000 for first place. Next, Nick talks with Rowell Guevarra, who recently returned from a fishing trip to Alaska and Colorado. Rowell shares his experiences fishing in Ketchikan, Alaska, including fly fishing for salmon and rainbow trout, crabbing, and encountering bears. He contrasts the cool Alaskan weather and fishing conditions with the challenges of fishing in Alabama's heat. Rowell also shares tips for those interested in fly fishing trips and the benefits of hiring a guide when fishing in unfamiliar areas. Finally, Rowell provides an update on the Tallapoosa River, noting improved water levels and fishing conditions due to recent rain. He encourages listeners to book trips with East Alabama Fly Fishing for a chance to experience the local rivers. It's all brought to you, whether it's good, bad, or ugly. Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report for September 9-15, 2024

This week we sit down with Andre Davis, from Hoover, AL. Andre is here this week to talk about backcountry fishing, something that may not be familiar to a lot of our listeners. He emphasizes the joy of exploration and connecting with nature, even when the fishing may not be ideal, as the experience and scenery often make up for it. Andre also talks about hiking in with minimalist fishing gear, and offers a few tips on hammock camping. He also offers advice on how to find public lands for camping and fishing and discusses the importance of planning ahead and staying safe. Next, we hear from Steve Graziano (Graz’s Guide Service) about Lake Eufaula. Graz reports that the recent cool weather has lowered water temperatures, which has triggered a stronger bite. While the lake levels remain relatively high due to dam work at West Point, the fall transition is beginning, and the topwater bite is heating up. Graz mentions how bass are following baitfish into creeks, with frogs, and walking baits like the Vixen proving effective. He also discusses alternative baits like drop shots, Texas rigs, and tail spinners for targeting both bass and white bass hybrids during this transitional period. He has been focusing on bream fishing in narrow channels and outside bends, using poppers and beetle spins with success. Bass fishing has been slow due to heat, but is improving as the water cools, with topwater and spinnerbaits starting to produce bites. Taylor He recommends micro spinners for bass, especially in darker waters, and talks about his recent encounter with a sturgeon in the Choctawhatchee River. The episode wraps up with a shout-out to the efforts of the Choctawhatchee Riverkeepers for protecting local water quality. In the second segment, Nick is joined by Will Strickland, Executive Director of Mobile Baykeeper. Will discusses Mobile Baykeeper’s ongoing efforts to address issues like dredge material dumping, which harms vital habitats for fish and oysters. He also highlights a partnership with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers for a cleanup project targeting the Ghost Fleet area in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, where illegal dumping has been a problem. Will shares his personal connection to Alabama's waters, recounting memories of fishing and hunting with his grandfathers and their deep respect for conservation. He emphasizes the importance of community involvement in environmental protection, noting that each generation has a responsibility to preserve natural resources. Will encourages listeners to stay informed about water quality, fish consumption advisories, and to advocate for stricter regulations on toxins entering Alabama's waterways.
