During the recent Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) convention in Calgary, Northern Sunrise County Reeve Corinna Williams posed a pivotal question to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

She inquired whether he had visited the northwestern part of Alberta since assuming leadership, specifically to gain firsthand insights into the energy industry, as well as the unique challenges and accomplishments experienced by the region.

In today’s episode, we have the privilege of speaking with Reeve Corinna Williams to delve deeper into Prime Minister Trudeau's response and to explore the current state of affairs in northwestern Alberta.

    Connecting Rural Canada

    Connecting Rural Canada

Welcome to Municipal Affairs. I'm Christopher Brown.

Today we have a piece of exciting news for residents across rural Alberta, and Canada.

Earlier on in June, a significant announcement was made in Clearwater County, Alberta, that promises to reshape the digital landscape for many underserved areas of the province. In a joint effort to promote fairness and connectivity for every generation, the governments of Canada and Alberta have committed $153 million in federal and provincial funding to bring high-speed internet to more than 14,400 households in 120 rural and remote communities across the province.

Now this initiative, announced by the Honourable Goody Hutchins, Minister of Rural Economic Development, and the Honourable Nate Gloobish, Alberta's Minister of Technology and Innovation, includes extending this crucial service to over 800 Indigenous households.

We spoke with Reeve Michelle Swanson of Clearwater County about the announcement and what it means for her community, but also we talked about how the announcement has already turned the heads of businesses looking to invest in Alberta.

    This is Municipal Affairs.

    Alberta Municipalities Roundtable

    Alberta Municipalities Roundtable

    Welcome to Municipal Affairs.

Today, in our Alberta Municipalities roundtable discussion will delve into three crucial topics affecting Municipalities in the Province of Alberta.

First, we’ll address water management amidst severe drought conditions, a pressing concern for many municipalities.

Next, we will examine the aftermath of Bills 18, 20, and 21, focusing on the regulations that will be implemented around all three bills.

Finally, we will address a major concern for municipalities across the province: infrastructure funding. With aging infrastructure, municipalities face significant upgrades in the coming years - if not sooner.

Joining us for today’s discussion are esteemed guests from Alberta Municipalities: President Tyler Gandam, Mayor of the Town of Wetaskiwin, and Director Trina Jones, representing Towns-East and Mayor of the Town of Legal.

    Welcome to Municipal Affairs.
