Murder In Alliance
On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. David was eventually tried, convicted, and sentenced to life without parole for the murder of Yvonne. But the entire investigation may have been botched, or even worse, covered up. Now, after 22 years journalist Maggie Freleng investigates Yvonne’s murder alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three) and his organization Proclaim Justice. Is David actually innocent? And if so, who did kill Yvonne Layne?

Addicting!

The most addicting podcast I’ve listened to in years! I absolutely could not wait to go from episode to episode. The investigators do such a thorough deep dive into the case and are impartial every step of the way. Loved it!
Garbage

This podcast was a prime example of everything that is wrong with wrongful conviction podcasts. Had Maggie approached this case objectively rather than assuming David’s innocence, she’d have a bit more credibility, and I wouldn’t be here giving a negative review. I’m glad she got it right in the end, and I hope other podcast hosts like Bob Ruff take note that it’s okay to admit you spent a season (or multiple seasons) trying to prove innocence but were wrong. However, when you fill 20(?) episodes with biased garbage and successfully convince your listeners David was wrongfully convicted (see the Q&A episode) by only covering one side of the story, that’s not good journalism. It’s merely storytelling that’s up there with other dishonest podcasts like Serial that get the public so up in arms that murderers get released. Just because someone has money in the bank doesn’t mean they want to pay child support. Just because you think someone is innocent doesn’t mean they were actually wrongfully committed. You say you approached this to find justice for Yvonne, but that’s obviously not the case. You approached this to try to prove David was wrongfully convicted, which is the exact opposite. Be better. Shame on you.
