    Legacy of Love

    Ok, can I be honest? I don’t like funerals. I understand the value and think it is the right thing to do to honor someone’s life. I just don’t like the whole flowers, casket, wake, vibe. Recently, I have found myself going to …. you guessed it….funerals. While it was admittedly uncomfortable, I have noticed a pattern.  While celebrating the life of the deceased, no one talked about their great or grand accomplishments. Instead, I heard stories of love. Simple at times but consistent. Small acts that made an impact on those around them. A conversation, an act of kindness, being present when someone needed them, making time when there was a need. I heard over and over about the legacy that they lived. I heard about relationships and fond memories. I learned of the fun they had with those they loved. It was the experiences and simple acts of caring and love that those who were celebrating their lives talked about. Living a legacy of love is a choice. It’s not a feeling or wishful thinking. Love is an action, or rather, it is a series of actions taken throughout the course of an encounter, a relationship, or a lifetime.  Take a minute and listen to our latest episode of the Relathionshifts podcast about living a legacy of love.     Unwrapping Holiday Stress: Finding Peace in the Chaos

    I made the mistake of doing a bit of research on holiday stress. The results were…well…stressful. Take a look at some of what I found: 72% of Americans feel stressed during the holiday season. The number one cause of stress is lack of time followed by lack of money. 60% of people are worried about money during the holidays. 49% are worried about finding gifts. 45% are worried about family gatherings. 45% are worried about traveling. 57% report physical symptoms of stress during the holidays. 40% report a decline in their mental health. Studies show that heart attacks and other cardiovascular issues increase during the holidays. So let me get this straight, over 900 billion dollars will be spent this holiday season so that we can increase our stress and decrease our physical and mental health. What is wrong with this picture? What if we did something different this year? What if we took charge of our stress instead of letting it control us? Take a minute to listen to our recent podcast on holiday stress. We will give you some ideas that may just make your holiday season more enjoyable and purposeful. When we choose to take control of our holiday stress, it will make a difference.

    Gratitude: Don't Look Past It

    Here we are again, in America we are looking straight into the eyes of the Thanksgiving holiday. It is easy to look past this holiday and move into the Christmas season. I think that would be a mistake.   As we give thanks for our forefathers who risked their lives and families to begin a new adventure that we now call our home, it is important to recognize the significance of gratitude. This is about more than a shallow nod to turkey and dressing with friends and family. This holiday is about what truly defines us.   Are you a person who lives entitled, assuming that you deserve all the benefits that have been bestowed upon you? Are you more worried about what you don’t have instead of being grateful for many things that you do? Are you quick to show appreciation to those who come across your path every day and make your life a little easier or better?   Gratitude is a choice. Take a moment and listen to our recent podcast about being grateful. It’s a short reminder for us to focus on what matters this Thanksgiving.

    Relationship Check-Ins

    One size does not fit all when it comes to relationships. While there is nothing like being fully heard by someone, many times we find ourselves frustrated because the opposite is happening. We try to talk, engage, or connect with someone we care about, only to realize that despite all of our efforts, it just isn’t working. The problem is that we are speaking the wrong language. It seems natural that we should connect with others the same way we want to be connected with. However, that is a myth. The truth is that people and personalities are diverse. Therefore, learning to speak the personality language of others is crucial to growing strong relationships.     Everyday Reconciliation

    Think of an empty garbage can. Think about what happens if we put garbage in the can until it is full, and then we continue to put garbage into it. The result is a stinky mess that is hard to clean up. The same is true with our relationship mess-ups. If we don’t reconcile often and own our mistakes, they build up and cause significant damage to the relationship. It is important to learn how to “own our stuff” and thus empty our relationship garbage can. Learning to clean up our messes daily is an essential trait of healthy and growing relationships.
