Great diversity of guests!
I enjoy hearing the views of wildlife biologists.
Being a science major myself, I took as many wildlife biology and ecology classes as I could in school and feel that I view deer from more of a scientific point of view than many people that I hunt with. I have heard all of the “myths” and “wives tales” from many hunters, but have also seen actions by the DNR/Fish and Game that I don’t necessarily agree with. I think it is interesting all of the contradictory points of view on various behaviors not only between between biologists and hunters, but also between hunters themselves. One that really caught my eye is the effects of weather on deer “movement”. The episode on the soybean variety study found that grazing increased after rain falls, but most biologists on other episodes claimed that weather had no effects on deer movement. My takeaway is that hunter perception and observations do likely play a part into getting the “true” answers to some of these questions. When hunters talk about deer “moving” they usually are talking about how many they see. Maybe some of these environmental factors don’t alter deer behavior as biologists define the behavior, but maybe they do have some effect on hunter success?
