#247 - Breaking Down The Successes and Failures on 25 Acres in Kentucky with One Of Our First Land Clients Ty Johnson!

#247 - Breaking Down The Successes and Failures on 25 Acres in Kentucky with One Of Our First Land Clients Ty Johnson!

Habitat Podcast #247 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we sit down with Ty Johnson. Ty was one of our first ever land clients on his 25 acres in Kentucky after he made the move from Colorado to Kentucky, and we break down the Successes and failures he's seen on his property. We discuss:

He started by hunting on friends' property before eventually buying 26 acres of land for himself

Soil samples revealed the property had excellent soil quality, making careful chemical use vital

The strategic location of the property and the utilization of trails leading to and from food sources attract mature bucks and provide shot opportunities

Aspen trees are vital for wildlife habitat, especially at a younger age

Creating a diverse hunting environment with topography helps attract deer

Regular habitat improvements have also enhanced turkey hunting

Strategically improving trail systems allows for better hunting opportunities

Habitat improvements have greatly enhanced the attractiveness of the property for both deer and turkey

Turkeys now religiously roost on the neighbor's property to the east, then walk straight out to Ty's field

Simplifying hunting practices leads to saved time and reduced costs

Patience is crucial when hunting with kids.

Great Podcast!

My brother introduced me to the podcast a couple months ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. We grew up in West Michigan and Hunt in West Michigan. Habitat Management is something new to us as we grew up on a small farm in the days when you could dump buckets of bait and didn’t really need to worry about food plots and such. The episode about hunting with young kids was really cool to hear! My son (4yo) and I were able to get a deer this October and it was so much fun! A challenge for sure to get the boy to be quite enough for deer to come in but it was definitely my most memorable hunt to date. I would love to hear an episode with a dog tracker. For the past 3 seasons I’ve been training a tracking dog and it is so much fun! Would love to hear some tips/thoughts from a real pro. Love the podcast and keep up the great work!

Blake B.
