Embodied Equity: Managing Stress and Speaking Up with Amy Babish

Embodied Equity: Managing Stress and Speaking Up with Amy Babish

If speaking up for yourself in your career causes stress or nervous system activation (think increased heartbeat, sweaty palms, shortness of breath, or the urge to hide or run away), you are not alone.

In this episode, my guest Amy Babish and I discuss practical tools and techniques for managing stress and building nervous system capacity, so you can advocate for yourself as a high-achieving woman.

Amy Babish, a transformational coach with over 20 years of experience, shares her expertise in embodied equity, which is the impact of trauma on our nervous system. When trauma goes unaddressed, it can hinder our ability to confidently assert our desires and negotiate for ourselves in various aspects of our lives, both personally and professionally.

Amy explains that embodied equity work helps build resilience and capacity for personal, professional, and collective liberation by addressing historical and intergenerational traumas while fostering connections and helping us identify opportunities to speak up for ourselves.

    You'll learn:
What embodied equity is, and why it matters to high-achieving women who want to speak up, advocate, and negotiate for themselves - 03:39How microaggressions can lead to survivalist reaction - 09:07 Practical tools for discharging stress and regulating the nervous system - 19:09 How to differentiate between freeze response versus fight or flight response, and what to do about it - 28:05What to know when you've experienced burnout because you were in a toxic environment, or you were working with someone who was extremely biased and discriminatory in the workplace - 30:13 Amy's guidance on bringing awareness into the body to manage stress response of fawning, for example in meetings - 34:07 Why abuse of power in the workplace is never the victim's fault - 41:20

Navigating Toxic Workplaces: Conversation on Workplace Bullying with Caroline Stokes, CEC and Ludmila Praslova, PhD

Navigating toxic workplaces is something I coach on every week in my practice. Gaining the skills and insights to deal with bullying and unhealthy work cultures is essential for you to negotiate the uneven and sometimes rough terrain of your career journey.

In this episode, I'm interviewing two experts featured in the Harvard Business Review Guide to Navigating the Toxic Workplace.

Organizational psychologist Ludmila Praslaova and executive coach Caroline Stokes discuss the root causes of bullying behavior and offer strategies for both organizations and individuals to address toxic work cultures.

They provide insights from decades of research and coaching experience on improving communication, building allies, and advocating for change.

    What you'll learn:
Workplace bullying is a common problem that negatively impacts career growth and mental health Bullying often stems from insecurity and a lack of understanding between colleagues (across) or from either a direct report (up) or supervisor (down)Marginalized groups are more vulnerable to bullying due to power dynamicsWhy it's important to trust your intuition and how to do it if something feels wrong at workWhy, in addition to individual self-care, organizations need to take responsibility for creating healthy cultures How gender plays a role in workplace bullying, with men more likely to bully both men and womenHow to apply the "vote for yourself and vote with your feet" principle The why of building allies and documenting incidents to address bullying
    Featured in this episode:
Caroline Stokes is an Executive Coach for Start-up Cultures and Fortune 500 Leaders. 3 Steps to Overcome Pushback in Salary Negotiation

3 Steps to Overcome Pushback in Salary Negotiation

Hey, y'all, I have a free gift for you, I put together a really fun, a super quick online quiz that you can take in about two to five minutes.

    Access it here: www.jamieleecoach.com

This quiz will tell you which of the four leadership archetypes you are. It will tell you what your superpowers are, and how others see you. And you will get type-specific tips and scripts on how you can improve your leadership effectiveness, your self efficacy, without sacrificing your authenticity.

Ever been told, “You make enough money,” when you know your contributions say otherwise?

This happened to a client who felt frustrated and unsure how to respond, especially because she wants to keep adding value *and* get better paid.

When you’re a woman, a minority in the workplace, you will encounter comments insinuating you should be “grateful” for what you earn now (which makes me so mad… don’t get me started on how sexist that is).

But here’s the thing: your rebuttal does NOT have to be confrontational.

In this episode, you'll learn a proven, battle-tested way to meet comments like that with even-keeled, level-headedness that will elevate your leadership presence *and* create an entry point to the conversation you REALLY want to have.

To get 1:1 executive coaching support, book your free 1:1 consultation today at  www.jamieleecoach.com/apply
