[Early bonus release!] "GAY PANIC! 1955" E1: "Crush the Monster," or, "Groomers"

This is the true story of a panic that swept Boise, Idaho in 1955—a panic that continues to spread and damage our communities today. A standalone 9-episode serial podcast about a true scandal in queer history—in a new city with no Mattachine, no Bilitis, & no one to turn to. Patreon & Apple Podcast subscribers certainly made this season happen. If you've been subscribed here for a few years you might remember an early version of this series. This is a new recording, also updated for this story's bizarre relevance in 2023. This is season 5 of Queer Serial. You're listening to an early preview as a thank you for supporting my work! New episodes will roll out on the free feed next month for LGBTQ History Month! (You can follow the story in images from the true history on my Instagram & Twitter @queerserial during the run of the series next month.) Thank you so much for your support. ❤️ xo Devlyn 🧚 queerserial.com/gaypanic Find all things Queer Serial here: linktr.ee/queerserial Subscribe to periodic email updates here, and find more info & resources for the podcast at queerserial.com. Mattachine Meeting 🎉 Lisa E. Davis: "The girls were a bit more dangerous"

Lisa Davis has written two books—UNDERCOVER GIRL and UNDER THE MINK (available wherever books are sold). "Undercover Girl" follows the true story of Angela Calomiris, a lesbian photographer in the Village who was undercover in the Communist Party, secretly working as an informant for the FBI. "Under the Mink" tells the story of drag kings & queens who worked in the mafia’s Village nightclubs in the 1940s, who Lisa got to know personally. In today’s Mattachine Meeting, we’ll talk about how she discovered these stories. lisaedavis.wixsite.com/fbilesbian underthemink.com Lisa has essays published all over the place—including one titled "The Butch as Drag Artiste: Greenwich Village in the Roaring Forties" in Joan Nestle's book "The Persistent Desire: A Femme-Butch Reader." Lisa was also a teacher in New York at what she calls "SUNY CUNY LUNY." As discussed in the episode, check out Julie Enszer's lesbian journal "Sinister Wisdom" here: sinisterwisdom.org Explore the Lesbian Herstory Archives here: lesbianherstoryarchives.org Learn more about the LGBT Community Center's National History Archive here: gaycenter.org/archives Learn more about my work with Randy Wicker here: queerserial.com/randywicker Also discussed, click here to see "Out in Evansville: An LGBTQ+ History of River City" by Kelley Coures: https://bookshop.org/p/books/out-in-evansville-an-lgbtq-history-of-river-city-kelley-matthew-coures/19025896?ean=9781467153874 "The Daring Life and Dangerous Times of Eve Adams" by Jonathan Ned Katz: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-daring-life-and-dangerous-times-of-eve-adams-jonathan-ned-katz/14947937?ean=9781641605168 Lisa's bio of Blackie Dennis: https://dragkinghistory.com/1934-1950s-blackie-dennis/ Click here to learn more about the legendary Charles "Babe" Baker and the Ha Ha Club's "female impersonator shows," which Ron DeSantis has fascinatingly brought to national attention by citing the 1947 state Supreme Court case that shut the club down in a 2022 complaint against Miami's R House for their drag performances. In a classic move we heard a zillion times on Queer Serial, DeSantis threatened to revoke the restaurant's liquor license: https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-news/1947-florida-shut-popular-drag-club-state-resurrected-case-rcna40947 Interactive links & and lots of photos are available at Patreon.com/QueerSerial. xoxo Devlyn 🧚‍♂️
