Japa Syndrome
12/20/2022
In 1983 when I was in primary school, President Buhari was Military Head of State in Nigeria. The public primary school I attended then was decent, in many ways. By 2018, my son was in a private primary school, because I could not accept what public primary schools have become for him. I knew it was time to leave Nigeria, when the school fees per term, for my son who was in primary 3, had caught up with my monthly salary then. If I had to struggle to pay his school fees at 3rd grade, I certainly wouldn’t be able to pay it in university. I could not live with that. Fortunately, I had ensured my son and I always had United States visas, as soon as I got a stable job. As at 2019, when we japa from naija, Buhari was still president. Same leader, worse situation. The only regret I have is, I didn’t leave sooner.
