Today I’ll be joining by author and NJC contributor Kaylie Kay as we chat to Karen McLeod about her new book 'Lifting Off'. Karen has had some excellent reviews in the national media regarding her book, so Not Just Crew wanted to dip a little bit deeper about the book and her background as cabin crew for a long haul airline in the 1990s. Karen tells us about her early years in the airlines and how it shaped her future self.     Thank you so much for tuning into this episode of Not Just Crew. Menopause is sill on of the biggest items in our postbag. The time has gone when this subject was only talked about with whispers, rumours and old wives tales and known as the ‘Change’ In the modern workplace and especially the UK flying industry (We would love to hear of your experiences in other cultures and nations) where airlines are really starting to take this subject seriously and offering support. Even so many woman feel as if they don’t have the support the need, and still have many questions they feel have been left unanswered. On the 23rd July 2024 NJC Presenters (Award winning Voice Artist) Ally Murphy and Dr Jen Parker set out to make a show dedicated to menopause and asked crew any questions They had. The response was very positive and on the 19th August 2024 we recorded the show and we had to select just a few of the questions with the time frame we had. We really wanted this to be a live show, but with Ally busy filming with a minus eight hour time difference from Seattle, and Jen with working full time in her new career as a doctor we had limited time to get these two amazing ladies together.     From Crew to Dr Jen Parker.

    This is the interview I have wanted to record for some time. I first met Dr Jen Parker as cabin crew, and always thought she had so much energy and was great fun to be around. She was also the first Airsupport Girl (That's another story) . I flew with her a few years later when she casually announced to me that she was going to become a doctor. I knew Jen was bright and thought perhaps she she was studying for a PHD, but I should have remembered we are talking Jen here and she meant the real deal..... A medical doctor. It never once occurred to me that she wouldn't achieve it, and here we are six years later and she has achieved her goal, and what a goal/dream.... She is now Dr Jen Parker. We are so proud of her. Jen was also one of my first interviews when Not Just Crew started in 2020 as a way to inspire crew to help them realise they have the most wonderful transferable skills.

Alex and Trevor chat to Ally about the inspiration behind the project. Please subscribe to these true stories of what life in the airline across the globe is really like. The Red Eye Podcast is hosted and produced by Ally Murphy, a former Flight Attendant and Voice Actor. Ally was writing down her memories of her days as an international cabin crew member, when she realised how interesting, diverse and fun her life had been! And when talking with other cabin crew, they shared the extraordinary stories that happened when they took to the skies. The outrageous passengers, the emergency situations that crew are highly trained to deal with, and of course, the down route experiences that are sometimes awe inspiring and sometimes downright hilarious… Ally Murphy is ex cabin crew, and Not Just Crew Presenter known as a British Actress and an award winning voice over artist based in the USA. She began working in the theatre and television in the UK in the 1990’s and paused for 14 years to fly around the world as an international flight attendant. In 2016 she left the aviation world to follow her dreams to become a voice actor and has since won multiple awards for her performances. She hopes the stories of her adventures around the world, mistakes, dreams, and humor can help others trying to make the most out of their lives.
