Is Data Illiteracy Holding You Back? How to make better decisions

Episode #320 // Was Lucy Letby wrongly convicted in her healthcare murder trial? We may never know… but what we do know is that her trial was plagued by serious flaws in the statistical evidence presented by the prosecution. I find it just a little disturbing that the judge, lawyers, and jury were so innumerate, that they accepted the bogus statistics on face value. This lack of numeracy is probably just as endemic in business! But everyone talks a good game, and it’s often difficult to see the glaring holes that lie just below the surface. During my corporate career, I worked with a bunch of board directors, career politicians, and senior executives who exhibited a stunning lack of basic numeracy. In today's episode, I review the cautionary tale of the Lucy Letby trial; I take a look at how to build a robust process for decision-making; and I finish with eight ways to overcome the scourge of data illiteracy. Trigger Warning: Sensitive Content This episode includes a discussion about the trial of Lucy Letby, which touches on distressing topics such as infant deaths and the handling of evidence in serious criminal cases. These subjects may be particularly difficult for listeners who have been affected by the loss of a child or cases involving medical or legal malpractice. Please proceed with caution and take care while listening. If needed, feel free to skip this episode. ———————— FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career! 5 Rules for Leading Through Change Without Losing Your Team

Episode #319 // We are constantly inundated with media reports, LinkedIn blogs, and conversations around the water cooler about the amount of stress we face in today’s work environment.   What’s changed since I was a young leader at the dawn of my career? The ability to disseminate information has far outstripped our ability to absorb it and make sense of it;We are “on” for a much greater percentage of our day than we ever have been; andAt the same time, we’re dealing with major social and economic shifts, which make it even more difficult to know our boundaries, reducing our level of comfort, security, and confidence. In this episode, I look specifically at how to lead your people through the never-ending waves of transformational change, so that you can keep them focused, and keep yourself sane! ———————— FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career! 5 Reasons Why Your Strategy is Failing and What to Do About It

Episode #318 // Peter Drucker, one of the founding fathers of modern management theory said, “There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”  This highlights just how much of what our people do, doesn’t add any real value to the company’s performance.  You’ve no doubt heard me talk about value in the past — it’s the centerpiece of the No Bullsh!t Leadership framework, and it should be front of mind for every leader, every single day.  But this is a lot harder in practice than it might seem… and it starts way back at the strategic planning process.  Illogical leaps between planning steps, emotional attachment to the status quo, and misaligned incentives are a recipe for value destruction – and virtually every organization on the planet suffers from these ailments to some degree. In this episode, I give you 5 surefire ways to get control back, and make sure your people don’t spin their wheels by working on things that ultimately don’t deliver value. ———————— WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT STRATEGY FROM MARTY?
