0:59Hello, I get made fun of because I go Hi, my name is Dr. Benjamin Ritter. I'm, I always like every single one of my videos. And so walk into a room people will be like, everyone will go quiet and be like, Hi, my name is Dr. Benjamin Ritter. So hi, everyone. I have a background in organizational leadership and talent development. I basically work on helping leaders fall in love with their careers as well as great organizations that people can fall in love with. So I split my time as the head of talent development at a life sciences manufacturing company out in California, even though I work remotely in Austin, Texas, as well as coach one on one senior leaders and executives to basically be happy at work and to develop as leaders.

1:46So the final question, what did you want to be when you grew up?

1:49Okay, so there's a couple really young I wanted to be an archaeologist, which I learned over time is not an archaeologist. It was like a paleontologist, I wanted to work with dinosaur bones. But as a kid, no one had the heart to correct me. And I also wanted to be an astronaut that graduated into wanting to be a professional soccer player, which became my purpose for about half my life and led me to where I am today, because it taught me a very valuable lesson that the advice find your purpose is really terrible advice. I think we'll get into that today. And that then led into a couple other passions like diet,

    [00:00:01.370]Hey y'all.

[00:00:01.880]This is your host Elyse Robinson with Nobody Wants to Work Though podcast. I hope these stories will inspire you to switch careers. I was an auditor in my past life and now I'm in Tech and let's get to it.

[00:00:20.130]We are switching to Tech tech resources to accelerate your career in information technology. Monthly classes on tech topics. We offer free or discounted exam vouchers, scholarships, free Udemy courses, free events, free boot camps, and more. You can find us at www.switchintotech.org record on this computer.

[00:01:04.950]Yeah, of course. Thanks for having me today, Lisa. I appreciate it. I like you said, started off in banking and moved to Tech. I currently live in Denver, Colorado. Love what I do. Cloud security consultant. And I really enjoyed what I did before too, but I just kind of outgrew it. I started in finance right out of college. It was a great career, great way to start. Originally started kind of in a QA type role where I was reviewing money transfers and making sure that there was nothing crazy going on. Then moved into a financial advisor type role over the phone. It was rough, it took a lot of effort and everyone was not very welcoming to over the phone folks wanting to help them with money, which makes sense. Then I moved into a financial advisory role in person, which went a lot better. It was a lot more personable, a lot easier to build relationships and did that in California for a little bit, then ended up moving to Denver, Colorado and doing the same thing for about a year and a half. I really enjoyed it there. Lots of great relationships built and during that time I made sure to volunteer for as many things as I could.

[00:02:26.240]We had a volunteer group there with bank of America and Merrill Lynch, so I was always trying to network, make sure that I got myself out there and learned as much as I could while I was there. Eventually I decided that I had done the job for long enough that I kind of felt like I knew e

0:45Hey, y'all. This is Elyse Y. Robinson when nobody wants to work though, podcast today, we have Sylvia Heigl. And let's get right on to introduce yourself, Sylvia.

0:59So hey, at least thank you for having me. Um, yeah, so I am a fashion designer, I guess is kind of what I consider myself or what goes on, like, you know, tax returns at all. But that being said, I don't actually make any clothes at this point. And I guess my, my, my first big career change was that I had this storybook career where I was a fashion designer with a brand and, and I started super, super young. And did you know what? Lots and lots of people kind of dream of building their business and, and doing it in something that you love. And then it kind of turned into a total nightmare of something that I hated. And something that was not, you know, and that for a while it was really good. And I made money, and it was great. And then I think I'm super proud of my, the fact that I got out. And that, that when you you know, I think that the thing for me, I'm old, and I've had a lot of different things I've done. And I think one of the most important things is to go, Okay, this year that I am doing has been great. And it's not going to be going forwards. And it's time to move on before it comes around and bites you in the ass and you have to leave. Or it puts you in a different in a situation where you are kind of stuck because you didn't leave in time. So that's kind of an I still get from a lot of people because because I was a fashion designer and everyone thought that was really glamorous. And I made clothes. And I still have all these people who are basically, my friends because they wanted free stuff. And that kind of thing. And like you'd have all this like and you know, and I had press and I had all that. So it was this thing where people are like, Well, how could you leave that? And why would you ever want to quit that's so great and do other things. And, and I'll never do anything as glamorous as that. But I'll never do anything again that says like, makes me as miserable as I was before I got out on doing that. And I think that's kind of a part of my story. And so now I kind of do all these really crazy projects between fashion and technology. And I'm really, you know, because I'm always kind of doing stuff where I'm excited about the future and that keeps me motivated.

0:42Okay, all right. Today we have Carleen Dark-Bays. And my name is Elyse Robinson. I do nobody wants to work though podcast, and we can just jump right into it. We have a great switching story. Again Carlene dark. Go ahead and introduce yourself and what are you about?

1:03Well, hello, and thank you for having me. So my name is Carleen, I am I made a massive career switch at the age of 54. I'm going to be 55 this year. So I have been in broadcasting and media for 30 years and loved it loved it, it wasn't that there was any horror story that made me want to switch for me it was more about something brewing in my heart for like three years. And then you find that life kind of points you things that happen, point you in that direction, or point you away from where you are. And that's kind of my story, I loved my job, I was top of my game. In a high leadership position as high as I could go in my local home market without going corporate and did a lot of good things had a lot of fun. It was a fun job. You know, when you're running radio stations and digital marketing and running live events, that's a lot of fun, you're having a lot of fun, right. But there was, there was just a confluence of things that partially results of COVID You know, things that made the business and the industry and the expectations just a lot more stressful. And the older I get, and the more I realize how what a physical toll stress can take on you, it can age you tremendously, it can interfere with your relationships, it can, you know, give you wrinkles and gray hairs and stomach ulcers and, and things like that, that just let me know, it was time, it was just time to make a switch and move into my passion project. And, you know, I kind of had thought before it's too late. But really, it's never really too late, especially in today's world, it's not the same where you have to get out of school, go to college, get a job, work there for 50 years, get your gold watch and retire and live off your pension and Medicare and Social Security for the rest of your life. It's a beautiful world we live in where you can create your own opportunities, there's so much out there that you can do. So I decided it was time to do it while I was like I'm gonna get while the getting's good, so to speak,

3:17I would imagine in broadcasting is a lot of odd hours, or

0:18Hey, my name is Elise y Robinson and I am your podcast host with nobody wants to work though. And today I have you with Kristian Evans. He is our official first podcast guest. He runs a SAS fitness I've no Christian way, how many years have we known each other about

0:40being over for over four or five, somewhere around there has been probably longer, probably longer.

0:45And I find him to be so inspiring his whole story, I'll let you talk about it, but very, very inspiring. He puts in work, he puts in work and keeps me on my on my p's and q's. So yeah, just go ahead and introduce yourself. Who are you? And what are you about?

1:06Okay, I am Christian Evans. I'm out of Peoria, Illinois. I am a personal trainer. And I guess the title of entrepreneur, I am somebody who was just, you know what, it just came naturally in regards to the request of people wanting me to help them I was a cook for about five or six years and a nursing home. During that time, I had gone from 405 pounds and lost a total of 187 pounds in 10 months. And from there, people were asking me to help them lose weight to try to duplicate what I did. And I was reluctant. And I was hesitant at first, but I ended up getting in and started helping people. And it kind of led to me exiting that job and going full time as a personal trainer. But during that time of me transitioning, I learned a lot, I learned a lot things weren't as smooth as I thought they would go. And there were some strange things I had to do for change. But I overcame that. And now I'm here I also run my own podcast called The Success fitness podcast. And from there, we just pretty much just talk also had at least on my podcast at the top of probably 2020 During the during the initial COVID lock downs in how COVID kind of affected her in you know, everybody's during during that time. But I run my first personal training hours one on one or Zoom trainings from my home gym, and I call that success, fitness. And you also work at a commercial gym at Gold's Gym. And the process of going from a cook to full time personal trainer wasn't easy, but I'm here now. So that's my story in a nutshell.

3:06Yeah, I had the excuse me, I'm getting over nasty, nasty code. Um, so what was the thing that made you say, hey, I want to lose this weight, you know, because people go, you know, their whole lives until, like, literally the very end and, you know, they're, they're a certain size. Um, what was the catalyst? What made you say, Hey, I gotta change my ways.

3:35Um, well, I had three deaths in about 556 year span. First, my mother passed away in Oh, eight of from complications of breast cancer. And then my cousin passed away,

    [00:00:18.460]Music.

[00:00:21.940]Hey, y'all, it's me again with nobody wants to work though. Podcast. My name is Elise Robinson. I am the host, and this episode is going to talk about my career switching story. Most people don't know that I used to be auditor in my past, past life.

[00:00:39.790]And not an It auditor, a real life auditor, because I'm so deep into this tech stuff now, and I've been on lots of interviews and podcasts and been invited to different things. So I want to talk about my career switching story, which is sad. It's not sad, but I will start off talking about my love for tech and how I got into it when I was a child. I'm going to date myself, but I'm really not that old. But around nine years old, I wanted to know how those websites worked.

[00:01:30.570]I got my first computer. It was a packer bell computer. It literally had four megabytes of Ram, because we're like in what, you can get 32 gigs now, right? 32 gigs max on most computers.

[00:01:48.260]And I found this website because I wanted to know how those websites worked. It still exists. I'll put the link down in the comments, and it's called Lisa Explains It All, I think. And she's the same age as me.

[00:02:07.090]She's the same age as me. And funny enough, I chatted with her briefly on Facebook. I had reached out to her, and it took her a whole year to find my message, but it was during 2020.

[00:02:24.860]And I told her thank you, because without that website, I don't know if it would have been easy enough for me to learn and all that other kind of stuff.

[00:02:38.440]So, yeah, around nine, I wanted to know how those websites worked. Found that website, got into it, started building these little dumb websites. I still remember my old website. I'm not going to name it. I'm not going to name it because you could actually find it online.

[00:02:59.740]But I was pouring my little heart out. My first little blog. I don't know, were they called blogs back then? I don't know. I don't know.

[00:03:07.500]I guess they were called blogs.

[00:03:12.490]I built it on B two. B two, which is now WordPress. Which is now WordPress. And then that turned into taking classes in high school and college.

[00:03:26.810]And I was going to be a computer science major, but I couldn't find an internship. I mean, I must apply it to thousands of internships, literally. And they kept saying there's a shortage. And I'm like, there's obviously not a shortage, or else I would have an internship. Right.

[00:03:49.010]And come to find out, H one BS were deep. Me being a black girl at the time probably contributed to it, too. Black people as a whole are deeper into tech now than even five years ago. Right?

[00:04:09.640]And so I switched to accounting and became an auditor for a number of years.
