Notes from the Uncanny Valley

From a dimly lit room at the edge of the frontier, Gib Strange can see the shining cities on the horizon, over his shoulder, the abyss. From this unique vantage point he sends these sad, funny, beautifully crafted dispatches. Messages in bottles containing glimmers of half life, sad reflections and almost but not quite detatched observations. Or are they warnings? Can we change? Can we help? Will they reach us in time? Hypnotic, thought provoking and highly recommended.

On a whim and not expecting much, I searched the word “uncanny” into the podcasts app. And I have been richly rewarded.

Gib Edelman is an Underground Man for the Internet Era. He’s an affable but almost affectless guide to a futuristic dystopia that has already arrived, whether we realize it or not. If we’re all living in someone else’s vast, virtual-reality simulation where the laws of quantum string theory are identical to the computer codes used in browsers—as theoretical physicist Sylvester James Gate the 6th has suggested—then Gib is already operating in that simulation’s near-future, where we’re all destined to find ourselves (if we still have a future…).
