s2 e1 — MONICA LEWINSKY and ANA MENDIETA: the intern and the artist Notorious Women

    • Comedy

This week, Lavetta talks about Monica Lewinsky and, yes, that notorious blue dress; and Miriam talks about the life of famed artist Ana Mendieta.
-----
In this episode, Lavetta introduces activist and writer Monica Lewinsky (American, born 1973), and the notorious affair between Lewinsky and President Bill Clinton. The hosts explore her background, her upbringing, and her involvement in the White House. They examine the scandal and its aftermath, including the impeachment of Clinton. The hosts reflect on the unjust treatment of Lewinsky by the public and the media, and discuss her current advocacy against cyberbullying. Next, Miriam introduces artist Ana Mendieta (Cuban, 1948–1985), known for her powerful and provocative artwork. Born in Havana, Cuba, Mendieta was sent to the United States as a child as part of the Peter Pan operation, a project to help Cuban children escape Fidel Castro's dictatorship. She faced challenges as a refugee, living in foster homes and attending reform school. Mendieta's interest in art grew, and she became a renowned artist, exploring themes of feminism, violence, identity, and spirituality. Tragically, she died at the age of 37 under suspicious circumstances having to do with her then husband and famous artist, Carl Andre, leading to a controversial trial. Mendieta's work continues to inspire and provoke discussion in the art world.
