s2 e11 — RUTH FIRST and SUSAN SMITH: the political prisoner and the killer Notorious Women

    • Comedy

This week, Miriam tells the extraordinary life story of South African political prisoner Ruth First; and Lavetta tells the story of the disturbing crimes of Susan Smith.
-----
In this episode, Miriam introduces anti-apartheid activist Ruth First (South African, 1925–1982), who was a prominent figure in the fight against racial segregation policies, and who faced imprisonment and harassment for her activism. She was eventually assassinated by a parcel bomb built by the South African police. Next, Lavetta introduces Susan Smith (American, born 1971), a woman who murdered her two young sons and initially claimed they were kidnapped by a black man. The hosts explore Smith's troubled past and her struggles with mental health issues. While Smith's actions were heinous and cannot be excused, the hosts speculate on Smith's troubled past, her motivation, her struggles with mental health issues and the role of mental health in her actions. Last but not least, the racial implications of her false accusation raise important discussions about racial bias and the responsibility of law enforcement.
