What’s it like to work in dermatology as a nurse practitioner?

In this episode, I welcomed my dear nurse practitioner friend/ex-classmate, Elizabeth Cabrera, MSN, APRN, a family practitioner with 10 years of NP experience in urgent care, emergency care, and now dermatology🙌

Elizabeth will share her experience in getting trained in dermatology and how she practices as a nurse practitioner in the specialty field✨

    About ME:

Hi I’m Miki Miura, DNP, APRN, FNP-C👋

I’m a family nurse practitioner (FNP) in Hawaii, USA.

I was born and raised in Japan🇯🇵. I moved to the U.S. to become an NP when I was 25 years old after working as a registered nurse in Japan✈️

English is my second language, and becoming an NP in the U.S. as a foreign-born international student wasn’t easy. But, I was able to achieve my dream as well as many dreams that I couldn’t even imagine before, which include being awarded the State Award for Excellence for the State of Hawaii by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2024🏆

My mission is to empower nurses from all over the world to achieve their dreams of building successful and fulfilling nurse practitioner careers✨

One of my mottoes is “WORK HARD, PLAY HARD” (which, by the way, is my favorite phrase I learned from American culture😄). While I see patients at two clinical practices, run an online coaching business, and do many other things, I surf three to four times a week🏄‍♀️ and go on a vacation every three to four months🏝️

This ideal work-life balance is possible for you….if you learn how to study/work smart!!!💪

What it’s like to attend an American Association of Nurse Practitioners national conference

Last month, I went to Nashville, Tennessee, to attend the national conference, the largest conference for nurse practitioners in the U.S., and I had amazing experiences🙌

This conference is a fantastic opportunity for nurse practitioner students, new grads, experienced nurse practitioners, and nurses from other countries to network and learn valuable lessons that are directly applicable to nurse practitioners.

In this episode, I will talk about what it’s like to attend an American Association of Nurse Practitioners national conference.✨

Nurse practitioner explains【How to write prescriptions 101】

Nurse practitioner explains【How to write prescriptions 101】

This episode is about “How to write prescriptions 101”

Prescribing medications is one powerful way for nurse practitioners to help patients overcome diseases and conditions💊

I prescribe medications every day as a part of treatment plans👩‍⚕️

I precept family nurse practitioner students and realized that students often don’t learn how to write prescriptions in their programs.

We all take a pharmacology class, but the class focuses more on the science side, which is important, and not much on the practical side, like how to write prescriptions and choose correct medications and dosages.

In this quick tutorial, I will teach you how to write prescriptions in outpatient settings so you can better prepare for your upcoming clinical rotations and feel confident about your performance💪

How I landed my first nurse practitioner job

It’s been 10 years since I landed my first nurse practitioner (NP) job. Now I think back, my first nurse practitioner job really helped me to build a solid foundation for my career🧱

Many nurse practitioner students I taught asked me how I landed my first nurse practitioner job, and now I decided to make an episode about it.

In this episode, I discuss how I looked for jobs as a newly graduated nurse practitioner and how I chose my first nurse practitioner job. This episode will help you understand what worked well in the long run in my career-building and give you advice you can utilize☝️

How to come up with great DNP project ideas (with Kathryn Daub, EdD, CNE, CTN-A)

How to come up with great DNP project ideas (with Kathryn Daub, EdD, CNE, CTN-A)

This episode is about “How to come up with great DNP project ideas (with  Kathryn Daub, EdD, CNE, CTN-A)”

If you are going to enter a DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) program, you need to come up with a great idea for your DNP project as early as possible.

Some DNP programs ask applicants to write about their ideas for DNP projects during the application process, so you need to start thinking of what you want to work on for your DNP project as soon as you are considering applying for DNP programs.

But many prospective students have no idea what DNP projects are and how to choose a great topic for their DNP project (Don’t worry, I was like that also!)

In this episode, I welcomed Dr Kathryn Daub, who was a professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo for 26 years and the director of the program for 16 years before retiring recently. She helped many DNP students (including me!) to successfully complete DNP projects.

Dr Daub will talk about common mistakes students make and give advice on what to consider when deciding on a DNP project topic☝️

Here is the link for “HOKU,” institutional repository, to check DNP papers by the alumni of the University of Hawaii at Hilo:
